It's best not to limit yourself. There's a lot of ways you can make it, and like somebody else said on here, Network and get your music out there.

I agree 100%. I stopped focusing on trying to be the next big hip hop super producer long enough to focus on making excellent music in different genres. I was able to get my music published and licensed easily. I got my first royalty check in February! I'm aiming for movies now.

I think the important message he delivered was to broaden your horizons. If you open your mind to different avenues related to your skill your more likely to see a quicker return on your investment. There's no guarantee here that your going to be successful and fast. But you have a better chance if you keep at it and explore other options as well.

This is so true, it's funny how you never really think about other lanes like movie scores or tv shows , and commercials untill someone talks about it.

I hear what Mr. Cox is saying, but the industry today is often dominated by library music and can be selective to composers that have already previously scored major films. Its basically like you can get your music into these libraries and you're lucky if it gets selected. Its very difficult to get in with the right folks to work on a feature film on something like that, but one can build their track record, and network like crazy.

Hey Don. For getting your original music and/or portions of scores published and OWNING the masters, you need to look into investing in services like what "Tunecore" offers. Search for "Nielsen Soundscan" - it's a prolific 90 yo service that provides companies like BMI, SESAC and ASCAP ears in thousands of places: radio stations, youtube, commercials, tv programs, etc and they actually pay you when your licensed songs are played.

Networking is great! But it will take a lot of patients and even then the reality is that,regardless of your skills the opportunity might never come.

what avenue of music producing did you get into. If movies or sound tracks, what is a good company or website to go through, if you you did it that way?

not sure what he talking about because its harder trying to get a licencing or sync placement deal than anything else; publishing deals are not wide open; maybe it is for Brian Michael Cox but not for a new comer in the game

Songwriter/Producer here. You just gotta know how to do did it, target a show or a film that has music similar to your style of music, connect with the right people and write cues. It's not hard at all. Licensing beats is easy as I do that all day an out on beat stars dot come. Hell I signed myself to a Publishing Admin deal TuneCore Music Publishing as my Administrator for registering, exploiting and licensing my musical compositions and collecting royalties. You gotta work hard like you putting in 10 years.

B. COX is a Creator not an A&R. He would have to go way out his way and contact his management and A&R people taking time away from loosing focus as he's a busy as person as people got lives.
