Earlier in my leadership journey, I was prone to giving advice and direction before I even understood the fundamentals of the situation at hand. Beyond the fact that I robbed myself of meaningful context by doing this, I also robbed my team members of opportunities to think critically, problem solve, and plan their next moves strategically - not to mention the chance to show off all the hard work they had already done!
Next time you have an appropriate opportunity, I challenge you to pause and take a step back before jumping into answer-giving mode. Doing so is a true investment in the leaders of tomorrow. It will sharpen their skills, cultivate trust, and build their confidence.
