#peterfalkinterview #actorsstudio #columbo
Peter Falk (1927 - 2011) was an American actor and comedian, known for his role as Lieutenant Columbo in the long-running television series Columbo (1968-2003), for which he won four Primetime Emmy Awards (1972, 1975, 1976, 1990) and a Golden Globe Award (1973). He first starred as Columbo in two 90-minute TV pilots; the first with Gene Barry in 1968 and the second with Lee Grant in 1971. The show then aired as part of The NBC Mystery Movie series from 1971 to 1978, and again on ABC from 1989 to 2003. Falk was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for Murder, Inc. (1960) and Pocketful of Miracles (1961), and won his first Emmy Award in 1962 for The Dick Powell Theatre. He was the first actor to be nominated for an Academy Award and an Emmy Award in the same year, achieving the feat twice (1961/62). He went on to appear in such films as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Great Race (1965), Anzio (1968), Murder by Death (1976), The Cheap Detective (1978), The In-Laws (1979), The Princess Bride (1987), Wings of Desire (1987), The Player (1992), and Next (2007), as well as many television guest roles.
Falk was also known for his collaborations with filmmaker and actor John Cassavetes in films such as: Husbands (1970), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Opening Night (1977), Elaine May's Mikey and Nicky (1976) and the Columbo episode: Étude in Black (1972). In 1996, TV Guide ranked Falk No. 21 on its 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time list.

Without Peter Falk, Columbo would not have been the great success it was. Try to imagine anyone else filling that role. Impossible. BTW I'm true-blue Columbo fan. My wife would ask me why I am watching Colmubo, you seen them all many times? I would respond by telling how great the series is and how great a sleuth Columbo was and how well Falk portrayed the role. I think I've seem them all a half-dozen times and yet, I'll continue watching them.

Peter Falk as Columbo might be the single most beloved character in the history of television. My father once told me he saw Falk walking on a New York City street in the 1970's, and that enough people recognized him at the same time that they actually started to applaud him.

I am so much of a Columbo fan I practically watch an episode 2 or 3 times a week. Needless to say I've seen every episode 20x times. A lot of people have told me how odd that was a African American kid from Brooklyn so into Columbo that was filmed in 1970's when I was a child. Columbo inspired me to conduct my life as underestimated. Columbo was the quintessential blue collar worker that his adversaries underestimated because they were of another class. I related to that as I was coming up via boxing, school, the army, and in business. In an episode Columbo one said, "if I read the books, put in the work, I would have success". Today that is looked upon as old fashion because technology dictates everything. I wasn't the best looking, most articulate, or even most inspiring person; however, I worked the hardest. No one could out work me and by the time people figured it out, I was number #1 in practically everything I did because I put in the work. Thank you Columbo and thank you Peter Falk.

That's a very important comment and you touched on the thing that appeals to me so much about Columbo - his modesty. Although the villain seems superior and underestimates Columbo, he is actually extremely intelligent and talented at his job and defeats the self-assured evildoer in the end. So I agree with your belief that he is a good model for all of us, particularly in this age of shameless self-promotion. And I am glad that you, with your modesty and diligence, have been successful. I guess the classic virtues are still viable.

Steven Bocho tells a story of his first big writing gig on Columbo. Peter Falk would scream at Levinson/Link to make it a better show while encouraging Bochco. He also said when screw ups happened with the crew Falk would jump in and take the heat because he had the juice to take the hit. What a guy.

Im a life long newyorker. Im gonna die on this trash heap. Pete was an ace. He drank at my mothers bar for 10 years. Tipped like a monster and brought a stray kitten in once that lived in the bar for almost 20 years. Mr. Falk would stop in for a beer, but really just wanted to feed the cat special treats from his coat pocket. The man was...LARGER THAN LIFE.

I met him when i was 9. He told me his name was Pete The Pirate. and i Laughed and he said "that was easy, no get outta here". (My mother also told me John Cassavetes came in ONCE...and complained about the cat in the most SERIOUSLY JOKING way possible. He was another mensch)

I was born in New Zealand in 1955. By the mid 60's, my parents bought our first B & W television and I was captivated, mostly by imported American comedies, westerns & cop shows. The enduring series and my favourite of all time, was, and still is...... COLUMBO. Sky Television NZ still play it regularly on their nostalgia channels, and I series link every episode to this day. Columbo is my favourite fictional hero of all time. Thank you Peter Falk for your brilliance.

I've been watching Columbo since I was a kid in the seventies and they're still being shown now in the UK and I'm still watching them. The premise of the show is genius, you know who dunnit, how they dunnit and why they dunnit, then it's all about about how the genius, unassuming lieutenant went about proving it, which is what made it so original.
