I didn't really like Ton Koopman when I first heard him, but now I have a lot of respect for him. he has a real flair for Bach and his trills and embellishments add an improvisatory vibe that I think is very fitting for Bach's work. (I've read that Bach's own improvisations were something to be heard...) That run at 5:24... Fantastic!

It sounds like Koopman inserted a whole raft load of his own improvisations into this above and beyond what Bach added.

I had the pleasure of listening to, and watching Ton Koopman play in Victoria BC and was fascinated in his pedal technique of only playing "toe, toe, toe...." Amazing!

The nearest performance of the same work that comes even close to this, is by Elena Barshai. I believe, though not sure, that she multi-tracked for her recording. The Martinikerk organ and Mr Koopman are both deservedly legendary.

There's been confusion at times on the identity of the composer of the violin concerto this is an arrangement of. Prince Johann Ernst IV of Saxe-Weimar (1696-1715) was the nephew of Bach's employer, Duke Wilhelm Ernst, and the younger half brother of Duke Ernst August, who was nominally co-ruler with Wilhelm Ernst, although the older uncle refused to share power. Some say that Johann Ernst should have been a co-ruler too, but I'm not certain of that.

The teenaged prince was musically talented and took composition lessons from Bach's cousin Johann Walther, the organist of the Weimar town church.

I call Koopman the "trill-king". And he is. But he is a wonderful musician.

@worldcruiser12 I have also heard this plaing by Joachim Pliquet, Arvid Gast An Der Silbermann-Orgel Der St. Georgenkirche Zu Rötha and in Amorbach live If you are in the neighbour of this little town in germany visit there the former Benedictines abbey There is one of Europebiggest organ. It gives you goose pimples.

@advisorC101 In EMS, I've seen lots of deadrunks. "Any drunk that can be rolled, should be." -R.Gift, 1971 ("Rolled" means his wallet emptied.) A drunk patient had almost $800 in his back pocket. Police thought he had been assaulted. If so, his money would have been taken. I think he fell and hit his head on a cement parking wheel stop. He died of a depressed skull fracture.

The crazy thing about Koopmans is that sometimes he plays ingeniously transparent and then suddenly he gets 'sloppy'.

Quite good, but I like Simon Preston's interpretation more, it's more light, he uses less of trills.
