Continuing the strip down of the troublesome AEC V8 engines.
As described in part one these engines were a disaster for AEC and their parent company British Leyland with only 365 road going machines built.
This is one of three engines that were stripped to gain enough suitable parts to rebuild the original engine, many parts had to be re-machined or adapted to make as new.
This video is made up from reference shots that we make to help with the rebuilding process, as it maybe several years before it all goes back together.

AEC were supplied by Dominion Mtrs in NZ in the 70’s and 80’s. Especially Mammoth Majors. A true million miler. The V8 was problematic in the Mandator as development was rushed at the factory. From what I recall Dominion Mtrs gave away a free V8 engine with every new Mandator just to clear their stock . Hardly any got over 30 000 miles with the steep terrain around the country, especially logging country .

I can well imagine that to be the case, it would have faired better with a Road Ranger or other close ratio box. Cobbled together by Leyland to make do whilst squanding million on the ailing car side of BL. We fitted a RoadRanger to our preserved V8 and it transformed it.

Get some emery tape on the bearing surfaces and whack a glaze buster in the boars it'll be fine. Look forward to seeing more of this and all the work from your workshop.

3 of the blokes who taught me during my apprenticeship, plus my dad, always spoke about the old trucks of the 70s and 80s, especially about the v8 mandator. Heard so much about them it's like I worked on them. Any progress on this? Would love to see some more videos. Ta.

Can I ask.....Did Leyland have there own V8 for the ARC or are we looking at a Perkins V8. All very interesting guys.

Super Mastiff had the V8 Perkins, of which ARC had a few mixers. I looked after one.

Around a dozen or more in various states of repair, that said I have three and a half here.

Are liners pressed in?

Yes, dry liners like most of the AEC engine range.

Time off over Christmas so I'll put something together. Slow on the Foden, engine nearly finished and ready for painting.

Same as you mate, and I do like AEC's as well. As long as it's not foreign I'm happy.

Good idea to use 3 engines to make a good one. Parts must be extinct now.

It's like the Triumph Stag V8. Sounds wonderful but with issues. At least the Stag V8 can be made to work well. What about this one?

Looks like the engine failed in a big way. Can't be many surviving V8 Mandators now.
