This 3D animation takes us inside the body and allows us to watch what happens when an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used on someone in sudden cardiac arrest.
We’ve used the real-life ECG strip of a sudden cardiac arrest survivor to illustrate in realtime what was happening to his heart and how the AED worked to stop all electrical activity and allow Steve’s heart the opportunity to begin beating normally again.
Using an AED is easy and is the person’s only chance of survival! Simply by following the voice prompts, anyone can use an AED and have the power to save a life.
SaveStation is committed to widespread access, awareness and public education about when and how to use an AED and perform effective CPR.

She forgot to mention that just because the AED doesn’t advise a shock, it doesn’t mean that they’re in a stable rhythm. CPR should always be started after unless you feel a good stable pulse
@dash0173
@dash0173 2 жыл бұрын
true. there are only two types of shockable heart rhythms. v. fib and pulseless v. tach. its definitely very important to continue cpr until you feel a good strong pulse
@OriPeretz2301
@OriPeretz2301 2 жыл бұрын
Also even if the electrical rythm is good the patient could still be in PEA(pulseless electrical activity)
@NamelessBody
@NamelessBody 2 жыл бұрын
I agree mostly, but to be even clearer: As a first aid provider without advanced medical training, it is not required that you be able to identify a pulse. Just start CPR whenever someone is unconscious and not breathing normally (gasping does not count as breathing), and continue CPR until help arrives, unless the person very obviously starts breathing normally or resisting. As has been said in the video, CPR does not interfere with the heart trying to 'reorganize itself' and continued CPR on a person who does no longer need it causes no harm anywhere as serious as withholding CPR to perform a prolonged pulse search or withholding CPR due to uncertain results of a pulse check. Keep interruptions below 5-10 seconds whenever possible. If the AED performs an analysis, that 5-10 second time period will usually be completely used up by the AED. As soon as the AED informs you it is safe to touch the patient, perform CPR asap instead of going for a pulse and losing time. Also, lay people may be confused if they find a pulse during CPR. Obviously there'll be a pulse during CPR, because the heart is being compressed externally. In order to avoid such confusions under great stress, current guidelines in the US and EU recommend against pulse checks except for trained ALS providers (and even then, pulse checks should be low priority).
@alixena9340
@alixena9340 Жыл бұрын
@@NamelessBody Absolutely. The Australia Resuscitation Council advises using signs of normal breathing as a check of whether of not to provide CPR. No pulses are taken in First Aid Courses for the lay person. CPR then continues until the casualty shows signs of breathing.

I am alive today thanks to my local EMS for bringing me out of VF, and my local hospital for bringing me out of VF x 2! After 2 cardiac Catherizations 2 Stints, An Internal Cardiac Defibrillator, and 2 weeks in the hospital from 03/02/2022 (Heart attack date ) to 03/17/2022 ( Discharged To Home ). I am also having to take lots of pills to maintain me. I want to send out a HEART felt Thank You to every Doctor, Firefighter, Ems paramedic, Police officer, Nurse, and Civilian who have saved a life! Their actions are Truly PRICELESS! I can never pay them back. I can Honestly say I now know what it feels like to Suffocate, and fade to black and be helpless. Time slows down and minutes turn into hours, as I struggled for just one more Breath, trying to hold on, and knock on death's door. I evaluated my life and saw friends and family that have been past gone, comforting me, telling me to sleep The feeling of the shock from the defibrillator, like being kicked in the chest by a mule ( thank GOD it only lasted for a millisecond ). A flash of White as I returned to the living world as I opened my eyes to see 5 to 7 Doctors and Nurses hovering over me, that 2 or 3 seconds of confusion and fear where one wants to fight an enemy that suddenly woke you from your sleep. I couldn't speak for a few minutes because of the Oxygen bag and mask on my face. Of all the ways to die, car crashes, being shot, drowning, etc, nobody really thinks about a Heart Attack. Those who have survived such an incident should be able to really relate. Thanks for your time.

So, assuming someone is undergoing cardiac arrest and someone is already doing CPR, and then someone with an AED comes in.(Assuming they're not a professional or medically trained) Should the person doing CPR stop and allow the person to place the pads and allow a reading for the AED, or should they continue until the AED says to administer a shock?
@tessaweaver8610
@tessaweaver8610 2 жыл бұрын
The AED will tell you what to do once it's switched on; but you can generally get the pads on while the person doing CPR continues, then the machine will tell you to pause CPR while it does its thing. Be ready to start CPR again when the machine tells you (immediately after the shock, or as soon as it says "no shock advised").

@NamelessBody

Not enough to make a difference. They should obviously be uncuffed as soon as possible anyway, because CPR is less effective if the patient isn't laying flat on their back. If that isn't possible, you'll have to make do and perform CPR anyway. the AED won't mind the handcuffs.

In fibrillation, on the ECG, there is no clear QT or S wave, and something like atrial flutter. This can lead to doom to not only the myocardium, when this fibrillation causes cardiac arrest, but also the rest of one's body.

How do you know when the patient is okay? I know the video says that the machine will tell you to stop, but what if it tells you and the person is still unconscious? Will the person wake up and gasp like in the movies, or does that not actually happen? Of course a doctor would be the one to make the final decision, but what will the patient do after their heart is fine again?

Only a fraction of the power will go into the person touching the patient, but I wouldn't chance it. Most likely it won't be so bad, but you can't be sure. As Betty Smith said, there are ongoing studies right now; perhaps it is safer than we think, but for now, be careful, but not fearful.

Of course, it is a machine that delivers a good enough electrical shock to the heart when the heart is hit with cardiac arrest. The shock from the AED should restart the heart's rhythm and bring it back to normal again in most cases. The shock needs to be delivered around 4 minutes after cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is like choking. Brain damage and resultant death increases at the 4 minute mark after arrest unless the AED shock is given. If the shock does not restart the heart, do chest compressions until you can re-shock using the AED, and repeat the cycle again until medical help arrives.

@fabplays6559

The person could come out of it with broken ribs and a bruised heart, but it will very rarely kill someone. Always check for breathing before doing CPR, and remember that agonal breathing is not true breathing. If you notice someone is unresponsive and sucking air in like a fish out of water, that's actually their brain's last ditch effort to try and keep them alive, but it will not save them nor will it help for long. Do CPR.

When person is not breathing, do cpr. If they fight back (cpr is painful for the patient), stop. That also means he is breathing
@NamelessBody
@NamelessBody 2 жыл бұрын
@@fabplays6559 Perfect answer. Don't worry, the heart'll be fine even if you misjudge the situation. It's very rare for a person to fall into a deep coma that looks like death without actually being in cardiac arrest. It's very common for people to look for signs of life for way too long and thereby withhold life-saving CPR. Start CPR as soon as you think the breathing isn't normal and the person isn't waking up. The heart is a muscle, muscles don't break so easily. Nevermind the odd rib, they have worse problems than their ribs if they aren't waking up from you doing CPR.
