Aegina is one of the Greek islands close to Athens. The name of the island derives from the name of the mother of the local king.
The history of Aegina lasts from 2000 BC. According to Herodotus, it was a colony of Epidaurus, a small Greek polis. It was a part of Mycenaean Greece - the last phase of the Bronze Age in Ancient Greece.
The known history of Aegina is almost exclusively a history of its relations with the neighboring state of Athens, which began to compete with it in the sea.
Aegina was an essential part of all Greek's unions. It saw Macedonians, Romans, Venetians, and Turkish occupation. Until the beginning of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.
