@Cmal890020 күн бұрын
For whoever needs to hear it, towards the bottom of your ribcage is also where modern body armor should end for both mobility and keeping things from getting caught in your draw or while moving. It should not go to your belt and rest on it. While it would not feel good to take damage to your lower abdomen, the armor is to protect your vitals, like what your ribcage already does.
@kampar8220 күн бұрын
One veteran had some back issues, clearly not service related from his jumps. His solution was a frankenbelt, a weight lifting belt with mounting points for pockets. That belt allowed him to not support his plate carrier on his shoulders. It would be interesting if at least one manufacturer got interested in ergonomics. I fully agree.
@fallencrusader297519 күн бұрын
It would significantly increase weight and cost but they could always design a placart plate that overlaps the bottom of the plate carrier, and is held on by it by strong Velcro on the top and sides. This additional plate would protect the abdomen while keeping mobility. From my current understanding they already make placarts for plate carriers but they have no ballistic protection and they are really just there so you can have magazine carriers.
@kampar8219 күн бұрын
@@fallencrusader2975 Plates seem to be 10"X12", soldiers will still need to be able to crouch with the plate without getting punched in the throat by their protection. The area covered is surprisingly small.
@fallencrusader297519 күн бұрын
@@kampar82 You are right, they'd have to develop a smaller plate in-order for it to be a separate overlapping plate. If it is held on by straps that allow the placart to move independently from the plate carrier it may move with the body. However even then it still can't fall much lower without impeding mobility. Come to think of it the added weight would not be worth it, just for miniscule coverage. Perhaps instead of making a plate for the placart, you could make segmented faulds that articulate from each other by an inside liner. However this would probably be too costly and wouldn't work with the thickness required for modern plates.
@brianhowe20115 күн бұрын
Without modern surgery to fix it, the abdomen would be pretty "vital".

Armor fitting is an idea that really doesn't get addressed in RPGs enough. Starting adventurers and looting armor off enemies would most likely be ill-fitting, meaning it would affect combative abilities. It is an interesting angle not really expressed enough.

Sometimes a system has vague optional rules that touch on such things but I don't think I've evee played any system where the people I was playing with wanted minutia in that category.
@DanielMWJ20 күн бұрын
It's addressed in D&D 5e with the variant: equipment sizes rule. In addition to pointing out that one shouldn't be able to wear the armor of a differently sized creature, it explicitly states that if you want to impose more realism, the DM can require players to take looted armor to get it resized and refitted. I think magical armor just resizes itself, though.
@justinbayless321920 күн бұрын
@DanielMWJ Yeah, I understand we all have to make shortcuts to play the games, or it is just work for most people and of course time restrains. Whitesmith , actual historic name more accurate term ¿¡Don't at me about modern social politics. I just have a mildly autistic want for accuracy!?, fixing and resizing and magical auto-resizing are most common, and I used to do the same gaming. However, I believe AI could (properly and not rashly) be used to gap the time needed to make these adjustments. Ai learning doesn't always have to be about intelligence thief and bias algorithms, and data with blocked lines of inquiry and paywalls... censorsh..... Irl real users if munitions plate would have gotten it second hand, even scavenged it themselves off battlefields. In the English civil war soldiers often ditched the thigh guards because they found them uncomfortable or ill fitting. If you want a historical look not everything has to be perfect! But hey, I’d prefer my stuff to fit too lol
@Taolan847219 күн бұрын
So this is a problem in modernity as well. When my unit upgraded from the Interceptor Body Armor (IBA) to the Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV), I got screwed. I needed a medium long, but they ran out of medium long, so they gave me a large. It was so wide I couldn't shoulder my rifle effectively while wearing it, I couldn't touch my hands in front of me without bending at the elbows, I couldn't bend at the waist, so-on and so-forth. Shooting with it on the range, I shot like shit. I got yelled at by my platoon sergeant, who refused to accept that the issue was the body armor calling it an excuse. So when I went up to shoot again, I reached up and pulled the emergency release handle built into the armor, which is connected to a steel cable holding the armor together. Pulling the handle is meant to help prevent drowning, or to ditch armor that has become contaminated with hazardous materials. Without the armor, I scored perfectly. I had half a mind to slap my platoon sergeant with the scorecard. When I finally did get a correct-size vest, it fit me so much better.
