Omg, thank you for breaking the story in such a way. I am rearing it for my Literature of the World class, and with your explanation, I now have a clear understanding of how to approach the poem. ❤

The real Dido was a Kick Ass Women, I was waiting dearly for madeline miller novel of her but now she switched to Persephone. so I'm disappointed. Edith Hall gave a lecture about her and loved every minute of it.

Dido was a carbon copy of Juno, by the way, this beautiful and incredible girl with the mannerisms of an Italian fruit vendor is Juno herself. Juno happens to be the hyper-witch of that gang of desperadoes at Olympus, bossing around that big chicken of Jupiter, no wonder Aeneas spends his best breaths cursing that devil.

Loving these videos, thanks Erica. In the Roman versions of Greek Mythology, is Jupiter the father of Venus? I know there are different versions of many of the stories, but in the Greek version I had learned, Aphrodite was born as the result of Cronos castrating his father Ouranous, and the castrated genitals hitting the sea and the resulting foam made Aphrodite. And is Virgil basing some of his writing on a certain set of myths, probably from Ovid?

I’m having more trouble than I thought relating the Roman names of the gods to the now well-known Greek names.

Jupiter actually kisses Venus on the lips - not his weirdest moment though. The really impressive parts of the Roman legacy were the Byzantine Empire and the Catholic Church - they had much better lasting power than the Roman Empire proper, especially the Catholic Church.
