Here is a hit song from 1925 with music by the great Ray Henderson, and words by Sam Lewis and "Mighty" Joe Young. It is played by Lee Sims on a US Music Roll. The song was published as "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue, Has Anybody Seen My Gal?" and it is interesting to read the Wikipedia entry about a version of this song from 1914.

I've always loved the music so much of the turn of the previous century, I often wish I had been born in 1900 - as opposed to 1955 so I could have been right there to play it, sing it and dance to it. ❤

Thank you for bringing these old treasures back to life :) I even sang along with the words on the roll. The cats didn't seem to mind.

Mine sort of cat danced to the music. I reported them immediately; sadly, they are both now convicted felines.

"...flapper, yes sir--one of those!" is a far better line than "never had any other beaus" for some reason.

What version are you referencing, never heard that. Only ever heard "...flapper, yes sir--one of those!"

The mid-range inner voices are superb. Lee Sims and Art Tatum were the greatest!!!

If you look at the left side of the roll at the beginning, you can see that tape has been applied. When the tape shrank, it made the paper pucker. The paper has to lie flat or this kind of sound will occur. Thanks for the comment. This is the first time anyone said my Steinway grand sounded like a "tack" piano, but as long as you liked it, that's the only important thing.

I like that this piano has amazing dampers, the notes stop making the tone nice and flat (in a good way)

Yeah, U.S. Music sure liked to punch the roll number at the end of their rolls! Although usually unmusical, it sure let you know the roll was over! Then, on a foot-pedaled player, you could shift into rewind and rewind the roll. If played by an electric player, the extreme top and bottom holes at the end should have triggered the rewind automatically. If they didn’t (some problem), then hopefully the piano playing the roll number will trigger someone to come running in from the other room and hurriedly shift the piano into rewind before the roll is torn off the spool and all 88 notes play at once!

You think you could post the lyrics down in the comments section or in the description? I’m having trouble reading them and I can’t find the lyrics anywhere online.

The words are stenciled in, and not printed on. I think you are mistaking the letter S for N because of the way the stencil looks. I just looked at the roll and can't find any mistakes. Hope you liked the roll...................

I shouldn't complain, but the piano could stand tuning. Otherwise, your uploads are very enjoyable.

Yes! There are several suppliers of piano rolls. You can find all dozen - plus contemporary roll cutters listed in the back of the recent issues of the AMICA "Bulletin" (journal of the Automatic Musical Instrument Collector's Association), and some listed on the Mechanical Music Digest website. Most new rolls cut today at the time of writing (October, 2016) are "recuts" of old rolls of classical, salon, and vintage pop music (such as this). Unfortunately, there are currently very few rolls available of contemporary (let's say, 1980s-present) pop, rock, r&b, country and related music. I am hoping to eventually start a series of these with full copyright clearance / licensing and royalties paid. One major problem is that there aren't nearly enough talented contemporary musicians currently connected with the automatic musical instrument scene. If you know anyone who is interested in making (with a computer, or hand playing) some awesome piano solo arrangements of contemporary songs, please send me a message!

It's 100% pneumatic on the original pianos.....later on, they added electric motors. The pneumatic ones had to generate the air to push through the holes of the rolls by pumping two large pedals on the piano.
