Spectators and crowds are extremely important to boosting the energy levels and excitement in a racing game; and Aero GPX will definitely reflect this. I've been working on tech that makes having a ton of moving spectators in stadium seating along the sides of the starting line and stretches of track very cheap to render. Here's a short video clip (featuring a tiny bit of brand new music!) to show the proof-of-concept of this tech. The moving crowds in this clip do not impact performance on my development machine OR my Steam Deck in any way!
Also, please ignore the awful "Egg People" testing art, janky camera angles, and basic cube stadium seating! Those are placeholder assets that will definitely be replaced by polished, good lookin' art!

Are those ACTUAL CHARACTERS I see!? That's something that futuristic racers nowadays are severely lacking, and why F-Zero had so much soul. Excellent decision.

The crowds do so much to bring more life to the race tracks!! I backed this game and the demo already delivered on what I was hoping for, now it's making me happy to see it going the extra mile!

Is there a reason why health and boost are separated or is it just to be different? Feels like a major risk/reward element that makes f zero engaging and fun, removing it feels like it removes a huge element of risk.

Since in this game health and boost have different pit zones for each one of them, the risk comes from having to decide what to take at the end of each lap, either more health or more boost. Also, to compensate, machines have a lot less health in general.

what differentiates this from ballisticNG other than the graphics?

One is inspired by WipeOut, another by F-zero.

The playstyle here is much more of a mix of F-Zero X and GX (no weapons, high speed, car-based attacks, and special techniques to use in the air) Ballistic NG is MUCH closer to old-school Wipeout. They are both different styles despite being antigravity racers.

My only criticism here is that the health and boost meter should be on the same bar. It's one of those things that made F-Zero so fun, the risk and reward of using the power meter. Splitting them in two takes that aspect away

having played the demo, im not sure i agree. it's a lot easier to wall grind in this game than in X, so you still kinda can boost with health, but the real advantage of splitting the two up is that it encourages more risky combative play with other ships. the split also makes it more rewarding to play risky and engage with the combat mechanics, since ships have a lot less health and are easier to KO than in X or GX, which gives you a significant amount of boost when you pull it off. the healing stripes are different and often come up at the same time which creates a decision point between whether you need boost or repairs right now. it's different, sure, but the game feels a lot more lively as a result. it's hard to describe. everything i said here is also subject to change and yada yada, but.. it's clear the dev didn't just split health and boost without thinking about it. there's an intentional design direction there and it pays off.
