1:24 Song Starts Recap of the two flights Aeromexico Flight 498 was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 registered as XA-JED and nicknamed the HERMOSILLO the flight carried 58 passengers and 6 crew members The accident flight departed Tijuana Intl Airport bound for Los Angeles on August 31st‚ 1986‚ at the controls of Flight 498 were two experienced pilots Captain Arturo Valdes Prom aged 46 had over 4‚632 flying hours in the DC-9 and a total of 10‚641 flight hours First Officer Jose Hector Valencia aged 26 had over 1‚463 flying hours of which 1‚245 flight hours had been accumulated in the DC-9 Miles away at Zamperini Field a Piper PA-28-181 Cherokee was preparing for it's flight to Big Bear Lake registered as N4891F piloted by William Kramer aged 53 and sitting next to him was his wife Kathleen aged 51 and their daughter Caroline aged 26 the Piper took off at 11:40 a.m the pilot William Kramer had 231 flight hours of experience and had moved to Southern California from Spokane Washington the previous year (1985) The Collision At 11:46 a.m Flight 498 began it's descent into Los Angeles with 58 passengers and six crew members on board at 11:52 a.m the Piper's engine collided with the left vertical stabilizer of the DC-9 shearing off the top of the Piper's cockpit and decapitating Kramer and both of his passengers the heavily damaged Piper fell onto a empty playground at Cerritos Elementary School The DC-9 with all of its horizontal stabilizer and most of it's vertical stabilizer separated inverted and immediately entered a dive it slammed into a residential neighborhood at Holmes Avenue and Reva Circle in Cerritos crashing into the backyard of a house 13426 Ashworth Place where it exploded on impact the explosion scattered the DC-9's wreckage across Holmes Avenue and onto Carmentia Road destroying four other houses and damaging seven more all 64 passengers and crew members on board died (plus 15 people on the ground) A fire added to the damage.
