iem are used by artists (commonly used in concerts) and they can hear the count-ins, back track, and the metronome (click track). they use iems because it can help them hear their mix a little better, blocking out unwanted noise when performing .

Yep, this is the general formula to an iem mix. Artists actually choose their own mix, which can include or not include a component, increase and decrease the volume of a certain track, and "preference" what side of the in-ear these tracks are being played through. Again, these videos are just the generalised formula and not exactly what these artists would hear, but there's not really much room for change anyway. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions! There's a lot of information online if you're interested in learning more, as well. Also, these aren't "cheats", so don't feel any need to defend artists if they use iem mixes, because the large majority do, and their usage is to result in a better audience experience :)

The crowd number, distance from the crowd, the capacity and area of the venue you're performing in, if it's indoors or outdoors, if you're hard-of-hearing in one or both ears, if you have an ear infection or noise sensitivity issue, etc. These things are sorted out before performing, which is why artists have "practice runs". Also, with time and experience, an artist and audio technician may just know the volume necessary to overpower the audience noise and external backing track being played. The venue makes a difference, as well. IEMs have certain volumes they can be used at and for how long. At venues where you're performing for multiple hours, you have to keep the mix below 97 decibels. Other venues, it can be louder, but the exposure time is the main issue here, as anything remotely louder than the "safe zone" (~75% listening range) for longer than 15 minutes or less will cause ear damage. Also, they're electronic devices that not only emit heat from the battery pack, but also through the sound waves they emit, so by increasing the volume, there is an increased risk of electrical faults occurring.

@@hjlyrics5594 Again, it depends on what works best for the artist. Usually though, it's a mix, in that you can hear the same things in each ear, but one of the components is slightly louder than another in each ear. The description of this video points this out, too. This is called "favouring"/"preference". An example would be if an artist has a dominant foot that they'd usually tap the beat to with, the click track/metronome my be "favoured" to the IEM in the ear on that side of the body. This just means that it'll be louder than the other tracks in that ear.

​@@scndlyuta9385 Well, in terms of stage recordings, yes. These 'in ear monitor' videos follow the general formula of a backing track + click track + audio technician lead-ins. In other words, artists "personalise" what they hear, but you're not wrong in that this is what they hear. It's just a bit of a generalisation, though, which is fine for the point of informing someone. In terms of hearing something like this when recording a song, I would say it's not a common practice. They wouldn't hear the click track or audio lead-ins, but a form of backing track is used, yes. Song recording is actually done in "segments", in that an artist generally sings each line separately. The occasions where this doesn't happen would be in experienced artists or when a song requires a "run-on" style of singing that leads and develops into the next line. Click tracks are simply not needed when recording, as there's no external audience screaming at you, which would cause you to fall off of the pulse of the song, without a click track. Depending upon personal circumstances, audio lead-ins may be used, but it's more so someone in the other room hyping you up to start singing, or to instruct you to sing your next lines after a pause, not an indication of what section of the song you're in. For backing tracks, it depends on how you function as an artist. Some may listen to an instrumental version, some may listen to a demo version sung as practice, or some may even sing to someone else singing as a guide. It really just depends on how you and your label functions, and your preferences when recording. Also, you generally don't wear iems when recording vocals as an individual, but headphones. This limits the number of tracks you can mix and play, because there's less of an ability to "separate" the tracks, which leads to too much noise and audible clutter. You also want to be able to hear yourself singing, which isn't able to be done when wearing specialised 'studio headphones' for recording. Anyway, I hope that explains it all a bit for you.
