For those who don’t know mandarin, si means death. So Giselle saying e-si-le means “I’m hungry to death!” which is actually a correct expression, just way too informal for idols to say on broadcast haha

For some reason I heard either "ten" "four" or "death" and had to replay it several times. This is what happens when you have a complicated tonal language (not to mention one of the hardest languages) as a second language

In Mandarin Chinese. The tone you use to say a particular word will literally change the meaning. Different tones can often mean it's a totally different word. my husband is Chinese and I'm learning slowly. Hao ma is something that can be used to ask "is that ok?" but if you emphazise the ma (haoMa) it can mean phone number. That might not be entirely accurate but that's just what I've found in my learning journey

Koreans just can't fathom how big China is. AFAIK Coconut chicken is a southern Chinese dish (most famously from Hainan). Ningning herself is from the Northeast province of Heilongjiang. The style of cooking is pretty much as different as Italian and French.

@@harrymu148 as a person who grew up in shanghai, this is SO true. my dad is from Chongqing where they basically eat red pepper for midday snacks, and he could eat multiple hotpots without flinching once. Give me one drop of chili sauce and I'd run around the room coughing my throat out.

Haha, writing in Chinese is an entirely different beast altogether. My family uses traditional Chinese (each character typically has anywhere between 1 to 16 strokes if not more) so imagine learning how to write more than 5-10k different characters MINIMUM.

When I watch wayV, they make (M)Chinese seem fun and learnable, when I watch Ningning, it all of a sudden becomes an incomprehensible art that she gracefully expresses through her harmonious voice😂 I’m currently trying to teach myself (M)Chinese at home but I know I’ll never sound half as beautiful as Ning does when she speaks💗💗💗Chinese is truly incredible, that’s why I’m learning it.

I am from a Cantonese family and Chinese in general just never learned until 3-4 years ago always naturally understood Cantonese. I thought it’d be hard to learn Mandarin but now I don’t think it’s that hard. I’ve been practicing Mandarin on Duolingo and Cantonese on Drop, entertainment been watching a lot of mainland shows and dramas that I say things to myself in Mandarin sometimes. I want to go back and watch some tvb(especially the golden age of tvb) but so addicted to mainland ones

the tones in Chinese are hard af. it’s manageable once you get the hang of it but it sure as hell will take a lot of time to master. I even heard from someone that you can butcher Chinese grammar and people wouldn’t care. but you HAVE to know how to speak with a right tonality.

basically yeah. it is called as intonation. They were speaking mandarin in this live. Majority of people use cantonese in hongkong but cantonese also widely spoken in other country such as malaysia, singapore etc.

The syllable-level pitch pattern that does participate in word meaning is called tone (声调), and is the difference between 睡觉 shuìjiào "sleep" and 水饺 shuǐjiǎo "boiled dumplings".
