Affinity Photo 2 was just released, together with Affinity Designer 2 and Affinity Publisher 2 for Windows, Mac and iPad. Here are the best new functions and my first impression review of the new software. Should you buy it? Is it worth the Upgrade? Let me know in the comments what you think.
Affinity Photo 2 is a valid competition to Adobe Photoshop at a much lower price. Affinity Photo 2 is very intuitive to use and has some functions even Photoshop is missing. Check it out and maybe use the 40% discount launch offer that is on right now for a limited time.

I agree that it’s a mixed bag. I was really hoping to see an introduction of AI powered features. However, I fully support this company because when I couldn’t afford to be locked in to Photoshop’s subscription fees, Affinity Photo saved me. I’ll always support them because of all the money I’ve saved avoiding Adobe.

I suspect that any AI tools that use processing off your device (as is the case with Adobe Sensei) will require some sort of subscription, either for the whole product or as an addon. Why would you sell someone a product that has features that rely on off loading some of the processing to your systems for a single purchase price and let them use your processing forever? Probably the most sensible option would be to include the first year of access in the initial purchase price then give users the option of upgrading and getting another year bundled in, paying a subscription or turning off the features to use off device processing. Maybe give corporate customers the option of installing the off device processing in their own data centre/cloud and configuring their devices to use that instead. Recolouring a photo doesn't use much server grunt but big 3D renders or hi-res renders of a video does. The software business is, first and foremost, a business.

I agree on both sides here, I just hope there not getting stuck up with its product now, it doesn't appear they care less for those of us who payed for v1 only a few months ago just to be told that if you want to continue to receive the full updates then you have to pay again, it's very misleading and spiteful imo, I think they may be silently preparing for a subscription based now with this universal license they are selling. There going to lose customers, how can I support a company like that. Its crazy 🤪

For me, there are enough new features to be well worth the upgrade price, especially since I expect to get several years of upgrades at no additional fee until they release version 3. Considering that I used to spend $150 every 3 years for CorelDraw upgrades, $100 after 5 years for Affinity is still quite a bargain. It all depends on the work you do, if the new features will save you time, and what your time is worth. Of course, I also feel they should have an "upgrade" price for current users, and special deals for those who bought V1 in the last couple of months. On the other hand, the software is very cheaply-priced, so it's easy to forgive them for asking for the same price whether you own the previous version or not.

Finally a real review. Long time Affinity fan and user, but this release was not in line with expectation of cost vs features. Complete lack of AI Content awareness is concerning given the 18 months of quiet overhaul and all the develpment time before that. All other products on the market seems to recognize this is critical in a modern workflow. I expected $20/app upgrade pricing given the feature set I'm seeing and the historical practices. A move from $50/app to a $70/app and slapping on a "40%" discount how are people not calling this out more? I'll buy in, but doing so with the expectation we will see years of free updates again and not just little stuff.

Re: the price..man, everyone is doing this in everything…. Meaning, it used to be the “Covid” excuse saying we can’t get the parts, foods, etc. because there is shortage. So, prices increased. Soon, EVERYONE is upping their prices with no justification, but simply doing it because everyone is. Like does my barber need to increase his price $5? It’s not like he’s relying on anything to cut my hair that’s at a shortage…but because everyone else does, so does he. Same is applying here. There’s no need to up the price, but they know they can. It’s annoying as hell. Re: features. Yeah. Ai features absolutely should have been introduced..hell, even if you want to add those as an “add-on” options to V1. Cool, I’d be happy to do it. But lack of Ai features is making me almost NEEDING to get back into the dreaded Adobe suite…simply for my business workflow.

@@NOT_A_TOP_FAN Indeed. All reports suggest that creative software companies had banner sales years during the pandemic, it was a money making machine. I'm positive Affinity made a killing during this time. Many other software companies in a similar postion actually started discounting massively again and they realize customers bought so much stuff in this space they are having to grab for market share. It frankly shocks me that Affinity took this approach with V2 given how much the user base just grew. They claimed during the pandemic "we care" so here are some big discounts. I already had everything before that. But now the economy is actually terrible (it wasn't during the pandemic) we get a big price hike and no loyalty discounts.

I upgraded as soon as I got home from work last night. I think they did indeed improve the Highlights/Shadows function in Develop mode. And from my little bit of exploring, also the Exposure slider. I used to just develop with nothing but lens correction because it was so bad but this looked a lot more pleasing. To me, that alone was worth the price of upgrade, especially when you add in the non-destructive editing in Develop now. Add in a vastly improved Liquify persona, and I'm actually quite happy. Affinity isn't perfect, but considering this is only ver. 2 I'm very excited to see what they come up with next. Adobe has a lot more money to throw at problems, but they don't offer enough moreof what I need to make PS even vaguely worth it for me.

I bought 1.x back in 2018. I've had four years of free upgrades now. Without hesitation I bought the Universal License for the full suite. Even if there aren't HUGE changes between 1.10 and 2.0, I don't care. Serif has earned my vote with my wallet by supporting 1.x far longer than I ever expected them to. I have a full Creative Suite license ... and yet I STILL use the Affinity suite for most of my day-to-day work. Mainly down to using Premiere Pro and Adobe Express for banging out a really quick social media post from a supplied project. The only thing I was reeeeeeeeeeeeally hoping for was a way to do animated gifs in Photo. That's one thing I still have to fire up Photoshop to do. Just the basic frames/tweens/timing is all I generally need. So it's PS or GIMP until Affinity adds something. Or maybe they have and I haven't found it yet.

To be honest, Affinity Designer is the one of the 3 products that came out swinging the hardest. Also, the fact that we have drag & drop FXs now is something worth the upgrade for me. I was tired of group nesting just for a stupid outline. The biggest thign here is the bundled discount. All 3 apps for all platforms for 100? I'm broke atm, and I couldn't let that pass. Your criticism is as valid as it can get. There should've been far more for photo, something similar to subject removal like photoshop has. Let's hope we get more substantial updates regarding AI, but more importantly, tooling. We need an API to make tools for our own use. I hope Serif reads this and have some plans because that'd be one of the best things to happen to the suit or at least to Photo.

I am all-in and happily made the upgrade to Affinity Photo 2. Arguably, this was not a true 'update' price, but for me it was a no-brainer. The non-destructive raw processing, luminosity/hsl/band pass masking alone is worth it. Seriously, at the current price-point for Affinity I did not expect, nor want, any AI features. For my work, Photoshop became bloated with features I didn't use; Affinity caters more to my desires for artistic photography with non-destructive edits in an artful manner.

This seems like a very fair assessment, showing both the good and the not-so-good. Affinity Photo v1 lasted for several years, getting improvements several times per year, so v2 might wind up with some of the improvements you suggested--I hope it does because the high quality displacement and being able to target specific people in a photo would be amazing.

AI powered features are a LOT more difficult and costly to develop than standard features. It requires to setup an entire datacenter and dozens of humans on the company side to train models. You can't expect that from a small company, at least not overnight, when it's a matter of years of R&D for companies the size of Adobe.

I see another improvement which is performance. On the previous version I had performance issues when working with rather big files, around 100mpix and couple of gigs in weight. Next day I see new version, installed it and to my surprise no glitches at all! Tested it multiple times and I am really happy with it! New features looks ok, but performance pushed me to purchase v2.

Affinity now has a financial impulse again to invest in better features so at v3 years down the road i can decide if its worth it again to upgrade or keep v2. Also i found all the apps supe responsive at v2. Great deal, I am brand loyal obv but lets check V3 yearrssss later :) Glad this is behind us all now.

I was really hoping that a Lightroom alternative raw editor was coming down the pipe from Affinity, as this is the thing that will do two major things for Affinity. The first is to allow existing AP users to drop their necessary use of LR and, secondly, it will draw a significant amount of Adobe users to becoming AP users.

I didn’t hesitate to buy the universal. Im mostly excited for it being an official windows 11 release since V1 crashed all time on Win 11. Finally better PDF and font support, V1 was plagued with software incompatibilities. I like the old icons that were more distinctive… now they are so color muted and look too tiny. Nice that they added the last used swatches to the color wheel but I would prefer a brush pallet. You’re right about it needing AI selections but I use Luminar Neo for that.

Yes I think this upgrade is worth it so I have already decided on the universal licence. For years now I have kept coming back to affinity apps but the real big one is the develop layers in photos. The v1 apps were improved on over time and I feel the same will happen with v2. Affinity/Serif need to make money too so this was always going to come sometime. Funny but I actually prefer the old fashioned approach instead of all the AI too 😊

I have an Adobe subscription paid for by my employer. I bought all the Affinity apps when I was freelancing full-time (as well as putting Photo on my iPad recently), which was a perfect solution. I only keep the Affinity apps on my machine now because of a few features Photo has that I prefer over Photoshop (stitching, stacking). I can't justify the upgrade, but I look forward to looking at them again once they've had more time to fix the issues I have with V1.

I'm in the same boat as many others. I switched to Affinity to get away from Adobe's subscription scheme, so regardless of how others see the value I see great value in continuing to support a very robust alternative. Here's the value: For less than I would have paid Adobe through monthly subscriptions I not only get Photo 2, but I also get the Designer and Publisher upgrades. That's one amazing, cost-effective deal! I'm very happy and will stick with Affinity as they grow and compete.

For me, ignoring actual version numbers, this feels like it would be the jump from version 1.0 to 1.5 rather than what I would expect from 1.0 to 2.0. The non-destructive RAW development is important but should have been available since launch. The other features are nice but not game changers. You could achieve all the same benefits with existing tools (blend ranges, etc). Some of the UI re-design feels like a step backwards and takes Affinity Photo towards the over-complex software-engineer-led design that I find gets in my way. Is it worth the upgrade price? It's so cheap that it would be hard to say it wasn't. However, are Serif moving to the same upgrade model as DxO, Luminar, etc where we might now expect to have to upgrade every year? If so, then I would begin to question the value. If we receive iterative free upgrades for a couple of years...then yes.
@mhoeher

I think the new non-destructive raw development feature plus live masks make it a totally fine upgrade for me. Sure, some content aware/AI features surely would be nice as well, but depending on what kind of content one processes, this might be a sad but negligible omission 😉

It's just about having the right tools at the right time for a particular task. Personas are what make Affinity able to switch tools without needing to move your work piece into different programs. I think it's done this way so they can grow the features available in that persona going forward without impacting workflow.

there is no real benefit to the nondestructive raw development since the file size balloons to the same size aS WHEN YOU SELECT PIXEL as the output. check it out.
@mhoeher
@mhoeher Жыл бұрын
@@wrzlbrnth4092 There is... the feature basically means you can go back to the raw layer and continue editing where you left off (i.e. with all of your masks and settings still intact). This is a totally different thing compared to "re-developing" a pixel layer (where you don't have the editions you did previously). Basically, this means you can do stuff like "undoing" a mask you applied in the develop persona. Of course, if file size is an issue, keeping the raw data will not be an option, but you're not forced to use that feature (and IIRC, the app defaults to developing into a pixel layer anyway).

Spot on comments. You listed exactly those issues I do have with the V2. One thing to add - on Mac its absolute nightmare to buy this with AppStore. Affinity did bad job here with us unable to log in even we paid for it, many on Mac paid for the software but have not recieved any key or log in info. Just a mess. Affinity does not not communicate with Apple and act like we have not paid for the V2. Even when sent bank slips and confirmation we got nowhere.

The upgrade from Affinity 1 to 2 was a no brainer, for that price, and I think Affinity deserved it, since adding value for years on Affinity 1. The expectations for Affinity 2 were (too) high, and not all I expected was in the upgrade. Using Affinity 2 for two months and with Affinity 2.1 around the corner and the value pack of brushes, icons, etc I think the upgrade is a steal. The combined list of improvements for all apps is very large. The expected AI will come in due time, but I happily use Affinity without it. I rather have they mature the AI instead of throwing it in. The most I miss about Affinity 2 are your videos 😃

For me this is just not an improved update, when I dig it deeper, watching their V2 explanations, in my use case, there's no need to upgrade. I hope there's something like AI integration, or other smart filters improvements. Something that change the visual dramatically not just having subtle improvements for subtle effecr. I hope AP have Filter Gallery like PS with its own cool visual effects... Hmmm maybe I'd just buy the Photo V2 for my Ipad only (currently I'm using the 30 days trial of Photo V2 on Ipad)

Thank you for a very objective and useful evaluation of Photo 2 vs 1. I don't need/use Designer or Publisher, so I don't need the suite. I will probably upgrade the photo product since I can't find a cost effective alternative for what I do as an amateur/hobby photographer. I still need an image cataloging solution, and I was hoping v2 would include that. Lightroom as an imaging and editing tool combined is very appealing except for the price, and the old Lightroom Classic can't be purchased stand alone these days. You must buy the Cloud version or the suite, but I have my own file server for images and want to keep them local. How does Olivio Sarikas manage all his image files I wonder?

The luminosity mask seems great tool, specially because you can preview the areas being masked, but in the end I think you can live fine with the blend range of V1. Hue mask seems a bit like color range in PS but faster. My question (sorry if silly) is if I can refine those masks with a brush or add a second mask to apply only in some parts? In my case I'm in serious doubt if it worth the upgrade for now.

I like that the license now appears to be combined and cross platform. If you're just Windows, just Mac or just iPad/iPhone then it probably wasn't much of a problem before but when you could be on any of the three due to the need to switch quickly to a different app (and of course an app that one customer insists on is only available on Mac (iStudio) whilst another is PC only (PSP),e or work desk based or mobile then the price rockets up very quickly. I haven't move my Mac over yet but if I'm understanding the license correctly I've got all three apps on all three platforms for less than the price of 2 of them on one platform before.
