I have used a lightly brewed herb tea - such as oatstraw, mint stems. Brewed 15 -30 sec. No more. For me it has alleviated the drying out of nasal tissue. Also I have trained my tongue to stay rolled back while I go to sleep. No need for chin strap.

I'm wondering if the A-Fib I developed during surgery 15 yrs ago and stayed with me was due to unknowingly at the time having sleep apnea. A year ago, my Cardiologist suggested a sleep study. I use a BiPAP machine now with best ever results. Hang in there if you're just starting with a machines. Make use of the resources you have to help you over the hump. It takes the right mask for you and the right machine pressures for you and the right machine along with an amount of personal determination to benefit the therapeutic result.

Started using a CPAP 23 years ago. I gained a lot of weight and it was like the CPAP didn’t even work anymore. I have lost 25 Kg (~ 53 lbs) and now weigh about 175 lbs. I get a great nights sleep with my CPAP or even a decent nap sometimes without the CPAP. Beware of the impact of being overweight.

I would recommend checking with your provider for possible issues with your machine/mask. The FIRST thing I noticed after starting my CPAP was that I finally felt rested when I woke up and had energy all day. You have my complete sympathy, as I know how awful that feeling can be. I hope you find an answer.

A smaller pressure range is way better for me! Start off with a lower pressure so you can get used to CPAP. I had to change my own pressure because over 13 wakes me up. I also increased the starting pressure as I got used to it. Now I start at 9 with a max of 12 and it's the perfect range for me.

I'm always tired, even when I use my CPAP full-time. I get so frustrated that I stop using it, but there was this one time when I woke up and felt amazing and no longer tired. It lasted a few days for me to feel this way, but then I went back to my old being tired all the time. I have tried to mimic what I did but have no luck. I talked to my doctor many times and have made changes to see if it would help, but nothing helped. Being tired always makes me depressed, and I don't like it.

I have been using Cpap for about 15 years. It was definitely a learning experience in the beginning. I went back and tried to get my mask changed but they said I had the right one. The one I use is over my nose. Now let’s fast forward. My new machine with heated hose and an APP so I can track my sleep and apnea is perfect. My advise is to adjust your mask sometimes if it’s leaking, clean it periodically and replace it every couple of years. I have moments but they are very seldom when I feel it isn’t working. I never sleep without it.

Funny I have moments where I think it is working but really it just chokes me out every night. I have had sleep studies, settings checked and rechecked only to have the same results I had when I didn’t use one. If I get the same results with or without this machine I would prefer to sleep without a useless device strapped to my face that could cause new health problems.

Why dont you use a nasal mask. I used to wear a face mask because I was diagnosed as a mouth breather. Through a series of discoveries over time, 15 years to be exact, I now use a nasal mask. When I was using my full face mask I got 16 ahis per hour. I then taped my mouth and my ahis reduced to 6 or 7 an hour. I then went the whole hog and used a nasal mask, still taping my mouth, and my ahis went to 0.5 to 1.5. The tape I use is a 3M product, with the name Nexcare and Transpore. It costs about one pound or 1.3 dollars for 10 meters. Lasts for 70 to 80 sleeps. Make sure to cover the corners of your mouth. I started the taping of my mouth because of some guy on youtube pushing breathing through your nose. Your nose filters and heats your oxygen intake. Look it up. I forget the actual header but put breathing through your nose in youtube and I am sure you will find it. When you use nasal mask you will never go back to full face. When I started using it I would wake up and think oh no I forgot to put my mask on, only to find it sitting under my nose doing what it should be doing. Completely less intrusive.

When I first started using CPCP many, many years ago, my biggest problem was, because of lots of headaches, I could not tighten my mask enough to prevent leakage and this led to my eyes drying out at night. I tried many different ways to protect my eyes from the leaking air. None worked! I don't remember if I talked to my doctor at that time. On my own I did research and learned about nasal pillows & picked out & bought my own headgear out of pocket. Nasal pillows are very comfortable for me. Because I toss & turn all night (have for most of my life) I wanted headgear where the hose was in back instead of front. For many years I enjoyed using the Breeze headgear. I loved it & except for frequent breakage, I had no problems with it. Despite all my tossing it always stayed on! After Breeze was discontinued I have never had any brand of headgear that has worked as well. I Miss my Breeze headgear! Today, at 75, my biggest problem is that the strap that goes behind my head keeps ridding up and every time I wake, I have to pull the strap back down into position. Also, the side straps always feel like they are cutting across the edge of my eyes. Very irritating! I have bought the covers for the straps, but it only helps a little. I also have to build padding for the part that goes under my nose, other wise it hurts. I Never had any of these problem with Breeze! I wish they'd bring Breeze back! It was perfect! I am currently using Opus 360 Nasal Pillow Mask. I have tried both ResMed and Dreamwear but neither is as comfortable as Opus. I have noticed that in many reports people who started using CPAP claim to start having more energy. That has never happened for me. I just stayed tired all the time, even when I was younger. CPAP just keeps me from feeling strangled. I currently have a BIPAP machine. It's ok, but there are times the machine and I don't sync and I end up exhaling while the machine is in inhale mode. Thankfully this doesn't happen often! Sure wish they'd come up with something that works better & was comfortable! Janet

I eliminated a lot of leaking by washing my face each night before putting on my mask to ensure the moisturizer I use daily is gone. I use Cetaphil and avoid using soaps with moisturizers when cleaning my face. It's taken all of a month to become adjusted to my BiPAP, and I came pretty close to quitting because I lost so much sleep. F&P's Vitera, a full-face, silicone-lined hard plastic mask (Seal, as F&P terms it) works best for me and helps keep my mouth closed. Best to wash the seal in moderately warm water to keep the silicone resilient. The seal leaks profusely when a replacement is needed.

Same here. At 68 my face can still be a bit oily which will allow the full face mask to leak everytime. Every night I must wash my face shortly before bed and also wash off the mask with soft soap and warm water. It will still leak if I go on my back but right or left side I'm fine. Mask seal must be replaced by 45 days or it will leak which they send a new one every 30 days. Also I cut a 3/4 X 3" fabric band-aid to fit on the bridge of my nose which helps the mask to seal better. Used CPAP for 10+ years. Good video.

@@kaboomblueskies Long after I wrote that I did switch to a nasal mask and after nearly 6 mos finally got comfortable enough to sleep deeply and well. My mouth stays closed, and my numbers great. I was always afraid of taping so good thing this worked out. My DME tech also discovered while I was still using a full-face mask. After ramp my pressures were auto at a pressure setting of 4 to 20. An adjustment to a much shorter range was my first biggest help. The best, though, was changing to a nasal cushion with silicone frame.

I'm in my early 60's and I usually wake up at 3 am every night. I do go back to sleep though. Started CPAP (Airsense 10) about three weeks ago and I use a full face mask. I actually look forward to sleeping each night. The adjustment has been very minimal because I formerly used a dental device that moved my jaw forward along with a back pack device that prevented me from rolling over on my back where my worst apnea occurred. Now I can sleep on my back if wanted, but I end up sleeping on my right side each night. So far so good. Looking at my results each day, I have less than 2 episodes per hour on average, which sounds pretty good to me. I would recommend CPAP for anyone with sleep apnea.

I failed back in 2019 from leaks, mask coming off, went through 4 different mask over 3 months. It was awful. Well, last month I realized I'm slowly killing myself from shit sleep. Whipped out the KZfaq and found some tips and tricks like this and my solution is simple, the bleep system, V-Com and mouth tape. I've been scoring 98-99 on the app and my sleep score has been 92-96 on the pillow app. I feel like a new person. I've pre-ordered the new Bleep magnet system, I can't wait! Reading all these comments- I find myself fortunate. I have been using a CPAP for about a month now. Before CPAP- I could hardly function during the day. I was constantly tired and never felt rested. My sleep test showed I had 51 events per hour. Since I started using my CPAP - I average about 2.5 events now. Sometimes less. I still have mask leaks most nights- but i usually wake up so much more refreshed. I hope all who are struggling can find the right mask / right settings to help with your sleep. It really can be life changing.

My original test showed I had 79 events per hour. With my CPAP i'm down to 3-7 events per hour. I still only average 5hrs sleep a night, but that seems sudfficient for me. Doctor says I am an "outlier". CPAP really helps and I have no issues since I changed my facemask.

At 77, I wake up once or twice to urinate however, I now keep a hospital type urinal container by the bed and go without turning off the CPAP or turning on a light which had increased my sleep time noticeably. Having sinus issues, I now use Afrin as I go to bed each evening and my dry mouth issues have disappeared. I do not use it at all during the day to keep it from becoming a habit or causing issues. I now change masks every three months and have mostly eliminated leakes, however the strap will stretch a bit over time so it has to be snugged u[ a bit every so often. My biggest problem in the beginning cause me to have heart issues because I turn a lot during the night and my hose was wrapping around my neck so I wouldn't use it at all. Once I got AFIB, I started using it religiously and soon got past the issues. I have since had an ablation, and a year or so later, a floor pacemaker.

I hope you don't mind my comment about Afrin. >>My experience .....Do not use , your sinus will reverse and you will find it getting worse after a spray. I use the cheapest sinus pills. Cheap because it will have the least chems. or use saline solution, and get a good air purifier for your room. I have narrowed my urination (was 6Xs/night) was due to salad and lisinopril. Salad is a diaretic, who knew! My biggest GAME CHANGER is an overhead hook for the tubing. If you have a friend who has "Acid reflux". It is probably S/Apnea, and you just saved their life!

Been using a CPAP AirSense 11 for 6 months and the biggest problem I had was "mask leakage" (due to a heavy beard). This leakage tended to cause the water reservoir to dry out, resulting in dry mouth. Also, eye irritation from leaks around my nose. All of this was cured by using a "Memory foam" mask, which is very comfortable!

It can be difficult to get used to being all wired up, a different bed & this mask on your face, to have to deal with a different pillow also. Most nasal makes will leak if you sleep on your back. Your face relaxes & it leaks. My best sleeping on my sides! Been dealing with this since the late 1990's. Wouldn't sleep without it!!! A real Blessing!!

I am on Bi-pap set at 15 / 10. in order to hold my F F mask on without leaks I have to adjust the headgear VERY tight. The strap around the back was cutting into my scalp. The best solution so far is to wear a Soft-top welding cap, with bill in back, under the straps. I also wear the headgear with the Velcro tabs inside which prevents the tabs coming undone. In addition, I can adjust mask pressure over my nose by sliding the strap on top of my head forward and back to find the best fit.

I believe Sleep Apnea to be one of the most undiagnosed health problems for people. This is probably due to lack of access medical attention and or denial that we have an issue sleeping. I snore bad, according to my wife. I never hear myself. So, I didn’t know how bad it was. The most important question to ask your sleep partner, is how does it sound or more importantly, do I stop breathing mid breath and then gasp to regain normal breathing rhythm? This is a sure sign of Sleep Apnea. After years of prodding from my wife, I finally relented and had a sleep study done where you go to a clinic and sleep there while they monitor you. It was said I actually stopped breathing 2/min. I never could enter REM sleep. 😢 The lack of REM sleep has been linked to Dementia. It is very important to get REM (Rapid Eye Movement - Deep Sleep). They noticed this very shortly after I started to sleep and put the CPAP machine on me. I woke up the next day curiously rested. A feeling I hadn’t been experiencing. They hooked me up up with sensors from head to toe and even a blood oxygen sensor and blood pressure cuff. I didn’t think I could sleep with all that on me, but I did especially after they started the CPAP on me. I’ve been using CPAP now for about 6 years. I even travel with it for work and use my machine in hotels. I have come to realize I need it and must have it. The other thing I would say is that you need to be proactive when it comes to understanding how to use your machine. There are many KZfaq channels that are dedicated to help you understand and use your machine to help you sleep better. This channel is one of them and I also like Uncle Nicko. Just type him in and put CPAP. He appears to be Australian and is easy to listen to. He also has a website called SleepHQ which is dedicated to helping us understand more about Sleep Apnea and the proper use of CPAP equipment. You would do well to subscribe to his channel. After being diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, your doctor will probably set you up on CPAP and order your machine. Find out how your insurance will cover this and how much you will be responsible for it out of pocket. A key component to the insurance paying their portion is your use of the equipment. You have to use it or you may have to pay for the entire use of it. He will use the settings recommended by the Sleep Study technologist that seemed best for you when you had your sleep study. This is a baseline and you need to be the person to determine if you are getting the best sleep possible. I can’t stress this enough, you need to be responsible for this by educating yourself in how the equipment is working what types of data it provides you and what it means. Your medical equipment professional will set the CPAP machine up with the settings recommended by your Doctor as indicated by the Sleep Study Technologist. Again this is a baseline setting. You need to communicate with your doctor or the medical device specialist how you are sleeping or more importantly if you aren’t. There are a myriad of settings that can be changed. Pressure level, your exhaust pressure, humidity levels both in the tank as well as in the tube. Bottom line, BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE. 😊👍🙏

I couldn't find a full face mask that worked for me. I had a gel mask a long time ago that I believed worked fairly well but, I believe, that mask was too heavy for most people so the suppliers I went through went with lighter masks. The lighter mask were more prone to leaks for me and would flutter making a noise and wake me up. I went to nasal pillows but incurred the leakage through my mouth he talked about. The chin strap he suggests was completely worthless for me because the pressure I use would just cause air to blow through my lips plus it gave me a headache. My solution was to tape my mouth shut with painters tape since it doesn't lead a residue. It's not a perfect solution because the tape will leak every now. I find if I shower before bed and thoroughly clean my face then the tape will usually stay sealed all night. I would love to find a better solution but this has been more than adequate for now.

Just got put on a Bi-pap ResMed 10 ST ...since I received the machine I haven't been able to get a night without several mask leaks. I don't even register on the number scale even though I was fitted, measured etc by the tech. I have a full face mask...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

It may sound like a small thing, but a cpap hose lift can sometimes resolve these leaks.

Even after the using chin strap to keep the mouth closed (I can only use the N20 nasal mask), the positive pressure is still blowing my lips open through the teeth at pressure range of 9-9.8. We are slowly narrowing it to eliminate that problem ad it causrs dry mouth. I need a minimum pressure of 9. Am also going through 40oz of water a night to rehydrate after waking up many times. Such aggravation!

I used Philips Dreamstation Auto CPAP machine with Air-fit P30i Nasal Cradle Mask. I used Nexcare Sensitive Skin Low Trauma Tape to keep my mouth closed. The nightly AHI varies between 0.1 to 1.9 The Mask Fit varies between 97% to 100% . However, I still get dry mouth when sleep. Any explanation for the cause? Thanks.

My issue is dry mouth which I thought CPAP would fix but it has not. I have a full-face mask with 20 for pressure. My guess is that it is because of the higher pressure of 20 since I have messed with all the humidity and temperature settings making them higher and lower (anything that I have seen people suggest).

I am 72.

I've been using the cpap machine for 3 months now. I was waking up with headaches. I tried switching masks about 6 or 7 times. Then, my doctor lowered my air pressure remotely. So, my issue was the air pressure was too high and the straps on my mask were too tight. Best to you.
