Discover multiple workflows for editing high dynamic range imagery in Affinity Photo. High dynamic range editing lets you work with an unbounded range of colour values across photography, 3D renders and compositions, allowing you to exceed the brightness of standard dynamic range and produce powerful imagery with an extended brightness range.
This video covers working with bracketed exposures merged to an HDR document, processing a single RAW file to HDR, importing and working with 3D renders saved in OpenEXR or Radiance HDR formats, and converting SDR imagery to HDR for a synthetic high dynamic range look.

Would it be possible to add HEIF/HEIC support in the future? The current JXL and AVIF formats are not supported on any mobile device.

It looks fine on my screen when editing, but when I export the jpeg XL image and view it on my Mac, I only see the clipped out SDR version. How did you export it as HDR?

Hi, it’s actually been in since 1.7 which was released years ago, but seeing as HDR displays are becoming more accessible I thought it was time to do an updated video on it!

And also - what about avif? Both Avif and jpeg with gain maps appear as much more usable currently for web and more widespread. I just bough Affinity 2 just to start playing with hdr display but it apears that exports on Affinity photo 2 are very limited as both exr and jxl aren't supported by chrome :( [ correct me if I'm wrong ]. And of course awesome that You added hdr export workflow to affinity but please few steps more please :).

Hi, you are correct: just after V2 was released with JPEG-XL import and export, Chrome frustratingly dropped support for it. We are working on supporting other formats that will hopefully have more longevity (that's all I can say currently), hope that helps.

This helps so much! I use Affinity on Mac with a Pro Display XDR, but if I record the screen, the video is always over exposed. How did you screen record this video in HDR?

Hi, I didn't use the built in macOS screen recorder (Quicktime)-my setup is more complex and involves capture cards, a mixer, and a Windows PC I'm afraid!

Thank you for this illuminating video. May I request that when you post videos you also mention on it the group/category to which the video belongs (such as Layers, Filters & Adjustments, Advanced etc) to which the video belongs as you've done with all the Version 2 videos? This helps those of us who watch and/or download these videos for offline watching to properly categorize them.

Affinity does panorama like No Effort and I HAVE done a lot of it in Other Programs.

Yes, Affinity is my preferred Panorama stitcher after having tried many programs throughout the years as well. I also get good results with focus stack merges in Affinity. Amazing program!

Hey, yes, they are-it's pretty much the same process apart from the 32-bit preview panel. Instead, you'll have those panel options on the context toolbar with the View Tool selected.

Thanks. All going well except for export settings, any suggestions for HDR export settings for viewing on iPad, iPhone, TV, etc. With HDR capability?

Can you please tell me why (and how to correct) horizontal white lines when creating an HDR or a focus stack image, it doesn’t do it if I use other editing programs, I’m using Windows 11. Thank you.

Hi Enrique, this sounds like a compositing issue with OpenCL. Do you have integrated Intel graphics by any chance? Try going to Edit>Preferences>Performance and unchecking OpenCL acceleration, then restart the app. Do you still see the white lines? If this solves the issue, you may want to see if you can update your graphics card drivers, particularly for Intel integrated graphics. This may let you re-enable OpenCL and benefit from the improved performance it offers. Hope the above helps!

@@Enrique-the-photographer try going into the blend range and turn down white values. Or just change the blend mode completely.

@@AffinityPhotoOfficial Thank you, but no thank you, I don’t really want to “play” with the settings on the computer, it was great while it lasted, the program is really good, very powerful, I used it for over three years, the issue started when I updated to a new version (not the new one that you’re selling now), but at the end it’s my fault, I should've left well enough alone. For now I’ll just use Luminar and Helicon Focus as an alternative. Happy new year.

Hi, what's SHS-HDR? I had a quick search but couldn't find anything on it. You could actually just batch process RAW files to a 32-bit format (TIFF, afphoto) and apply various adjustments (e.g. Exposure) via macros if you had many images to work through. There are lots of unique workflows that can be built up, I've just gone through the most common use cases that people may want to know about...

All videos are going to be recorded in V2 moving forward… However, HDR compositing has actually been available in V1 since 2017, so most of this video will apply to V1 as well as V2. The only thing V1 is lacking is JPEG-XL support…
