Hi Andrew. I'm about to make the jump from soundbar to a beginner home theatre set up. There are some great deals here in the UK at the moment on the Q Acoustics 3550i cinema package you mentioned at the end, & Sony STR-DN1080, all for £1350. Would you think this is a good starting point?

@rocco036 - I think that system is going to be great for you. I would maybe consider going with a different receiver just in case you need a bit more power for the Q's. Try this by Denon -- amzn.to/2Xm9BFP Back Up link: amzn.to/2D2klm1

I am currently planning my next system. Current system was definitely budget with Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers, cheap Polk sub, and pioneer “elite” vsx-44. I’m currently thinking 40% budget on LCR, 30% avr, and 30% subs while repurposing existing equipment for surrounds. Can’t wait for the RP-600m review

(The reason Why Andrew speakers are harder to drive) is because most of them have a large well built motor structure for better excursion and 🏋 to the sound or a larger scale of sound , In my opion the Amp is the foundation of a system anyways and the speakers are the frame/Structure .Yes i'm an amp guy first for 33 years ! Its fun having a 3k amp driving speakers under 1k this way i get up to 85-90 percent performace out of the speaker instead of having 3k speakers being drove by a pre 1k amp where you maybe get 40 percent performace or less ! ON THE AVERAGE ! Not always !

Thanks Andrew for reviewing the Elac Debut Reference speakers. I personally have speakers previously designed by Andrew Jones (Pioneer Elite SP-EBS73 Atmos, SP-EC73 center and SP-BS22 surrounds) for my home theater and absolutely satisfied. That's what made me also buy the Elac Debut 2.0 for my bedroom. I truly enjoy the way they sound for the money I spent (at 50% bargain discount sales). I previously had B&W 600 series for over 15 years and these AJ designed speakers are more dynamic, open, and detailed. I agree that these need a higher end source AVR or integrated amp with at least 125W per channel to fully experience its sonic advantages. These are paired to my Marantz and Denon AVRs that are between 2x or 3x the price of these speakers. As a long time home theater enthusiast and previous subscriber of various audio/video magazines, your videos have rekindled my interest in this area. I truly appreciate your review of affordable HiFi equipment like this for the rest of us! P.S. I also enjoy my SVS SB2000 sub with my Elites!

Fussy about electronics means it is a pass for shoppers on a budget. I hope people appreciate your commitment to an honest appraisal of the gear that you review, not an easy thing to do when you need manufacturers to send you gear. One last thing - ignore the Elac fanboys who inevitably will show up to whine or troll.

I just bought the DBR62 to pair with Rega Brio and the new Rega p3. Whole setup costed me around $1600 where i live. Can't be any happier with the sound. A bit on the warm side, very good clarity, a bit laid back but musical and dynamic. Bass with the Brio goes pretty deep for my taste and i don't need a sub. You can listen to it in a long session without any fatigure. The first time i listened to it i literally listened for three hours, one vinyl after another. Just didn't want to stop. It was that good for me.

One thing that stood out from this review was the idea that klipsch are easier to drive than Elac. That is incorrect, and based on the lies told by klipsch. The entire Elac line only get down to around 4.5- 5 ohms when the klipsch rp600m gets down to around 3 ohms, or under 2 ohms 😮 if you have the r41m! Marketing lies and actual measurements are two different things. The only place the klipsch are more sensitive is in the high frequency range. For this reason I simply cannot allow klipsch into my home, as I have no patience for dishonest companies.

Thanks for the honest review. I want to confirm that Debut Reference speakers really do respond to better, or at least more powerful amps. They also break in to give lower, deep, rewarding bass. From 25 to 55 watts upgrade, I got deeper bass, cleaner midrange, and well, all the high end I will ever want. Great speakers. But thay are best with more power. Most good speakers sound better with high end amps. $6,000 is a bit much to spend on an amp for these, but the point is valid. I recommend tone controls somewhere in your system to dial in the sound you like. Yes, these speakers will deliver. A little more power goes a long way with these speakers.

I personally throw budget straight out the window. Time and Time again throughout the 1980's, audio reviewers would preach, "Buy as much power as you can possibly afford.". That's the credo that I live by. It will help make a wider variety of speakers sound their very best. I also get as high of quality of source playback that I can afford, because the rest of the audio chain's performance is based on the quality of the play back source as well as the quality of the play back media.

I have always found this question interesting... Who buys an entire system all at once? They are the exception. I would say start with your foundations of speakers. So 80%. Find the mains that make you happy. Actually the mains and center that make you happy. Buy the main and a receiver. Add center. Add surrounds. Then buy the electronics. Buying all at once I feel (my opinion) lead rise to sound bars. They are easy and you get the entire system... I guess i simply don't see (and hear) home theater as one purchase.
@mrsj1417
@mrsj1417 4 жыл бұрын
What statistics do you have to support this ("they are the exception")? Trick knee? 2 neighbors? A friend's cousin's 2nd wife's brother? I see these baseless blanket statements on the internet all the time ("the majority of people that do (x) aren't interested in (y), they only care about (z)") and they just don't hold water without facts to back them up.

@@mrsj1417 @mrsj1417 in this case ten years managing a stereo shop experience. Big builds came but most client were looking to upgrade/ improve what they had. Ive designed 100k+ systems but the average consumer was spending far less and working from an exsisting system. Biggest improvement- bang for the buck, i my opinion, is speakers. Start there. Build a plan. Personally i started with a set of SLiii . I still have them tweenty years later. The electronics have come and gone but the SL3 remain. I'm sorry that I somehow offended you. Having an Engineering degree (which I earned while managing the stereo shop) I understand the need for statistics. My statements are my opinion since that was the question what percentage of your overall budget . . .

I installed a .1uf 1% metallized polypropylene bypass cap on the tweeter cap. It gives the DBR62 a better focused treble. More open and refined sound. Takes an excellent speaker and makes it outstanding. As to sibilance? I have "A" rated DAC/amp/preamp. If anything, the stock ELAC are transparent to siblience (and report it accordingly) that comes from the source recording and/or components. Klipsch and axiom (for example) exaggerate sibilience . Metal tweeters do that. The ELAC deserve scaled up gear, not just a cheap receiver which delivers 1/3 rated power, and other compromises like crappy caps + budget opamps in the signal path. I find that a lot of acclaimed speakers actually mitigate sibilance and mask it , which is inaccurate, though some people like this.

@bingoberra18
@bingoberra18 4 жыл бұрын
@@r423sdex Not saying OP is right or wrong, but standard crossovers can always be improved at this price point. You gotta remember that the material cost for this speaker is probably less than $100 and just good crossover components can easily add up to that, per speaker. Though another likely theory is that Andrew might have chosen not using that "improvement" to enhance some other function such as coherent off-axis response, which might have been interfered with doing this mod. Spending $200-300 on better crossover parts would probably lift these speakers to a much higher pricepoint.

Thank you for the awesome review!! If I may ask any ideas to how they compare to the B&W 606? Another question onto that question XD, how did the elacs sound when you hooked them up to the crown amp?
@andrewrobinsonreviews
@andrewrobinsonreviews 4 жыл бұрын
RE: the Crown We didn't hook the Crown up to the ELACs because while definitely more affordable, the Crown lacks a preamp so when you factor that need into the cost, it didn't feel like a necessary test. My belief is that speakers are the biggest contributor to the sound character of your system and as such should be at least 1/3 the total cost of the system. In my case I designed and built my own transmission line speakers using Focal drivers (total cost all in about $1,000). I use a vintage Denon 60 watt per channel PMA-520 integrated amp to drive them (~$500 when I bought it years ago). I also have a Clearaudio Concept turntable ( ~$1700). I find it all works well together. The speakers are quite efficient so the 60 watts seems to be plenty. I believe I would have to pay considerably more than $1000 to get equivalent speakers to my home built ones so I would say they represent about 50% of the total system investment. Great video by the way!

Ok I hear you , but don't forget there are budget amps that punch above their weight, I mean like NAD 3020, Marantz PM6007, Rega Brio, or Cambridge Audio CXA61 none of them that expensive, but still highly rated soundwise. Maybe in trying and put together a whole system without breaking $2000, these and the Elac's would be candidates.

I don't disagree with you guys. It all depends on budget. If one has a $1,500 budget, I would think you would want to get the best speakers you can afford, because upgrading the source gear down the road would make those speakers sound better. If you have a $5,000 budget, matching great speakers with great source equipment would not be as much of a problem.

Hey guys. Great video again. I love both the reviewing aspect of the videos as well as the great B-roll footage. I was wondering if you could ever do a video about how speakers are put into a range and when to use what speaker in a specific range. For example I am eyeballing the Q Acoustics 3020i, 3030i and 3050i and I find it hard to know what to get for my stereo music setup. And I know loads of brands have ranges like that. When does one type not suffice anymore and you should go up in the range?

@@KristiWright sure, it wasn't what was said, though there was some of that too, it was more what wasn't said. Mostly in the hints of it missing the mark for it's intended market audience. If you have a $600 speaker that needs a $1500 integrated to really make it come alive, you've missed the audience, especially when there are speakers that are more forgiving with, say something like an IOTAVX SA3. Another fantastic video :) Tried these speakers a few weeks ago, but finally returned them. I couldn't make them shine with my budget electronics. I was looking for an upgrade to my very much appreciated Q Acoustics Concept 20. Apart from the Bass (much stronger on the Elac), they didn't make that much of a difference to stand out from the Q Acoustics. The mids on the Concept 20 were even cleaner. And the Q Acoustics sound good, with something like a 150€ SMSL SA300. So for me, I couldn't justify selling my Concept 20 and adding 200€ to get the Elacs.

I watched your review about the center, how it sound and you said it more matched with the Reference tower. I have another candidate - the new old stock Paradigm monitor center 3 v.7 with a very good price, I know the sound won't be matched with Elac but I can live with that. How do you think? I drive the speaker with Yamaha RXV585 and so far the Elac sounds pretty good in direct mode. Thanks

Pretty much everything about these speakers appeals to me. My question is that I currently have a Yamaha CR-620 35wpc vintage receiver, which I love, but I'm looking to upgrade to the CR-1020 which offers 70wpc. I listen to a wide range of music, but mostly 70's rock, prog, and some jazz. The front port is great, as the limitations of my fairly small, 11'x14' listening room doesn't allow me to have speakers more than 12-16" away from the wall. I usually listen with peak DB measuring around 90-93db at my listening position. Do you believe these are going to get me where I want without a sub?
@Purpleyamz
@Purpleyamz 3 жыл бұрын
I think when it comes down to it, with most bookshelves a sub is always going to give you more bass and let your speakers breathe a bit as they won't be working so hard. I can't really run one, as I'm in an apt. and my neighbors are nice people. One thing I've noticed about these Elacs is that they take tone controls very nicely. I have a similar small listening room and when I need to, I just dial up the bass on my amp. The DBR62s can handle this added bass while remaining balanced and distortion free. In my space, it's enough. At 70db and higher, my couch will vibrate and you can feel kick drums etc. in your chest. It's not earth shattering, but it's satisfying enough that, for now, I've stopped caring about adding a sub (and I'm a bass player).

Hi. I am looking for some help to decide what to do? I have an old, but very good, Rotel RSP-1098 AV processor connected to two RMB-1066 amplifiers. However, my system lacks HDMI support, Dolby digital Plus, TrueHD and Dolby Atmos. I cannot afford a top Rotel or Marantz up to date processor. So I am not sure if I should look for a HDMI multi-channel DAC with 7.1 analog output to connect to 7.1 analog input of my processor or to replace the RSP-1098 for a Marantz SR-5014 or Yamaha Aventage RX-A880, both in my budget. I enjoy your video, they re great. But can you STOP saying “we don’t talk about specs...” and then show them in EVERY video. 1) Specs are important, you need to know if a speaker needs a recommended 50 or 75 watts to get going if you only have a 10w tube amp. 2) you show them on EVERY video, so what is the point of saying that after awhile it’s annoying. 3) You make mentions in most videos (as you did in this) that a speaker needs a lot of power to wake them up, or you will say “this tv doesn’t do well in a bright room” and other comments along that line. If you don’t give the specs, I have NO IDEA how much power the amp needs, does “a lot” mean 30 watts or does it mean 300watts. Having the specs helps me answer this question. This TV doesn’t do well in a bright room, is it a 250 nit TV? If that’s the case I know if won’t work in my bright room either. Is it 500 nits? Ok your room is brighter than mine, but at 500 nits I should be ok... Do you see what I mean? Specs DO matter and are important when you are giving buying recommendations. I love your videos, but just show the specs and understand that they DO matter.

I'm guessing that the sticker price sunk the Navis ARB51 Actives - Jones did his best to talk them up in the show interview he did with John Darko but compared to the VFM offered by the Debut series, its not hard to see why many of us would opt for the passives. You are the second reviewer in 24 hours to point out that the Reference deserves better amplification than many will be prepared to pony up for at this end of the market, and that's where I think the value equation starts to move closer to the Navis, at least IMO. The budget question is easy, but I dont think I've ever practiced what I preach - 30% each for source/amp/speakers and the remainder for cables to hook them together. Given that I've rarely paid more than a thousand dollars for any of the above (headphones excepted, but we're talking speakers), I may not be the best person to ask. The current obsession with DACs / streamers completely turns all of that on its head, but that's a whole other topic.

I was in the same boat. Finally got these and they are definitely and noticeably better than the 6.2 - its not just a style upgrade. To my ears they have punchier bass with deeper perceived low end extension (despite specs), a more natural, less forward mid range, and smoother sounding highs. The sound is more cohesive and thick than the 6.2s. I don't find these sibilant at all and I have them paired to a class D amp that is slightly on the brighter side. Same detail resolution as the 6.2 but with a smoother presentation - like the details are there but never bright or annoying sounding. For lack of a better description they sound more "refined" or "elegant." $600 is no small chunk, but you can often find them for around $450 used on ebay.

Kind of like a powered DAC or what used to be called class "Z" - similar tech to, and possibly even uses the same exact Qualcomm chip that's found in the NAD M2/M32 etc. Sounds pretty great, - a very (possibly overly?) clean, punchy sound which seems to pair nicely with the warmer, laid back vibe of the DBR62s. I actually put in a request a while back for Andrew to review the Sonos amp bc I think from a convenience and minimalism POV, there's not much that competes with it, and it's kind of a stealthy little hard-hitter.

Thank you for responding. The speakers will accompany the Audiolab 6000A Integrated/DAC amplifier which is clean, balanced but too neutral for my proclivity and they do not incorporate an analogue preamplifier that facilitates bass and treble adjustment but rather 3 digital filters. I am a reviwer/journalist of Electronic music so I am looking for a pair of dynamic soeakers with fast transient capabilities that are airy/extended in the top end and with emphasis on micro details. I currently own the Whaferdale Diamond 10 bookshelf speakers acquired 4 years ago. The frequency response in relation to low frequency is far too insufficient. I don't wish to sit back and listen, I much prefer to lean forward and be blown away. Hence, with this additional information, does your initial reccommendation still stand?
