I'm near 60, when I grew up in Los Angeles there were very few licensed contractors. Most everyone was just hiring guys from Home Depot. My main job as a contractor was fixing everything the guys from Home Depot screwed up. Nice to see a channel like this teaching people how to diy.

Remodeled my kitchen myself for around $6,000 USD. That was absolutely everything new minus the fridge and tile floor. Plywood cabinets (no MDF), granite counters, big white composite sink, nicer faucet/disposal, 3 appliances, backsplash, 2 new electric circuits, lighting/receptacles/switches etc. No one cares about my laundry list lol, just showing you can definitely get a 15-20,000 remodel for a fraction with some sweat equity.

the rise on the bullnose is a engineering design to keep liquid on the counter, same reason for the back splash. If you feel a rise at the edge of the counter, it's not age it's designed to keep liquids / spills, from running down the face of your cabinets.

I love the video! Wish you had more of these "budget friendly" tutorials for home renovations! Your channel has taught me so much, but I cant always afford the projects you're doing. If you had more videos like this one, trying to make use of materials you have and not purchasing new it would really help!!!! Thank you for all your time and efforts teaching us beginner home renavators!

It is pretty hard to do those videos i guess. There is so much variation out there in quality and also just construction methods. Plus he would need to run into projects where people want him to do that. But i do agree, it is good to see the tought proces and the way he goes about solving the stuff he runs into. In the end these kind of repurpose projects are all about experience in my opinion. Building new or simply replacing stuff is a lot easier.

I am such a huge fan, and you're so good at all you do. My daddy was a carpenter/cabinetmaker/furniture builder. I'm older now than he was when he died at 69 1/2 years old, and he was one particular man when it came to woodworking. Actually, he was particular in every aspect of his life, and you remind me of him oh, so very much. Thank you ever so much for your videos. They're great. BTW - the "more than one way to skin a cat" phrase actually referred to fishing for catfish, which were, and still are, often referred to as "cats" - and there is certainly more than one way to skin a cat. I'm so glad to be able to let people know that our ancestors weren't really skinning felines. 🤣

You rock Jeff! Thank you. I am planning an extension, as you pointed out that times have changed in the construction industry. Finding a contractor who can pick and choose what jobs he wants, and then if you do find one if they have the experience to do it right with integrity is an issue, so learning to do a lot by yourself, means you most likely will be more willing to do it carefully. I wish I had the skills to put in an ICF basement and 3 storeys above it, as a stick build but high R value walls, outer insulation envelope added. I guess once the more skilled part of the build is done, I can return to DIY'er mode to finish up the interior. Your video's are so helpful. I see you have over 2.6 million subscribers now as well. 😲😀 Jeff, I am so happy for you and ... as a Canadian, so very proud of you as well. You have the gift and your gift to us keeps on giving as we apply what you are teaching us. 💯🙏🙏🙏🇨🇦 Cheers East Canadian household☺

Glad you mentioned the importance of directional troweling. We installed large format tile and the tile guy tried to do the old-style swirls. Told him it would cause voids. He grudgingly went directional - for most places. Where he didn't we now have hollow spots.

This is my fav how-to video you’ve done to date Jeff. Preach! ✌️ I’m looking at buying a new house that has particle board cabinets installed in the late 80s and they’re such a hot mess. I currently live in a home built in 1834 with wood cabinets that are older than you and I and I love them. I’ve painted them three times in 22 years and they’re as solid as the day they were installed. I wish I could find used replacements for the new place, because prices are outrageous.

We've a very old house that we added a laundry/bath instead of only laundry/toilet by adding a stacker W&D. And yes, no contractor wanted to the job because of the floor slope and age of house. With the help of a friend we did it in a lil over 11 grand. Mind you, we tore apart all walls and everything was new. Wish I'd picked a lil more expensive W&D though. Those big apartment ones do NOT clean well. Lots of squirrel nuts in ceiling too. 5 grand was paid to labor of a friend as he did most.

I'm a 64-year-old young woman who has been blessed to buy my first home. I thank you for 1. Your integrity .2. Your willingness to help those of us who want to make renovations, but to be honest. I've seen the bad side of contractors. I do epoxy, but I need to educate myself on how to use some of the tools. My 3 children, 2 of which are girls and are 13 and 11, I'm teaching them to know how to build a home and create beautiful memories. Then my son, who is 41. Yes, you're reading right. He doesn't live at home, but I plan on using him to help move heavy things. I have shower red's and I need to ask the expert, (you). For my bath tubs, can they be repaired, or is it wise to replace? I'm trying to keep costs down. My 2 little ones have appetites bigger than some grown men.😂 I can go on and on, but it's not fair to you. But I really need to learn how to operate various tools. Can you please😊 help me?

Simple renovations like this aren't hard, and for many people all we need is to just see how a professional would do a job before tackling it ourselves. Thank you! Please keep this long format going! I'd love to also see more videos of the same type of renovations (e.g. more kitchens, bathrooms, etc.) because there's a lot to learn from each renovation even if you've already done a kitchen reno video before. Thanks again!

Another great video. I'm about to do my kitchen... the layout and cabinet carcasses are fine, so I'm going to re-do the ceiling ("shiplap" style), fix/paint the carcasses, make new cabinet doors, re-trim everything (cabinets, man doors, baseboards, etc.). A few pieces of 1/4" finish plywood on the ends of the cabinets to cover up holes, dings, etc. All in all, the entire thing will cost well under $6000 and way less than what a contractor would have charged (probably $20K or more).

i usually agree with everything Jeff says and watch a ton of his stuff love the channel, but I ALWAYS make a level line on the top of the first sheet of small glass and penny style mosaics. Of course its true that having a very, very close to level counter at min is essential to installing these tiles but I found it makes a big difference especially in larger walls in these small tiles, to hang it freely and make the initial install of the bottom row this way. Its very easy to manipulate individual pcs of these mosaics once the backing gets "smooshed". I find Hanging it off the top line and setting it in a downward motion gets it 95% straight and only small adjustments should be made after that especially when it is the old school cube glass tile. In all cases Jeff is right in that ultralight is a must. You cant afford any degree of sag...just my opinion as a 20yr tile journeyman.

@01:27 did anyone else hear you say 80 lbs of pressure per screw X 4 screws make 360 lbs? Horrors! Cover the ears of your grandchildren. Total should be 320 lbs if each screw is at 80 lbs!! I have already watched all of the individual videos but didn't catch it the first time thru, ha! Love your videos. I admire how relaxed you are about problem solving...great example to DIY workers.

Workers just need so much money nowadays to make it worth it, we had a guy come check out our front door, and we didn't blame him for not wanting the work 😂 a bunch of the wood was rotten and he probably knew for it to be worth his time he'd have to charge more than we'd probably want to pay 😂 especially for the lower-middle class dudes out there, we have to know how to do stuff

Hi Jeff. Another amazing video as usual. I've been doing remodeling for close to 30 years and I can honestly say your videos are one of the few on KZfaq that teach me new tricks and tips. I've been looking high and low at home depot for that aluminum trim you used for the countertop but haven't had any luck finding it. Any chance you can drop a link for me? It would be much appreciated. And yes Dewalt needs to give you that sponsorship. Heck home depot should also. Keep up the amazing work. God bless brother. 👍

Great idea for an old kitchen you don't want to or can't put lots of $ into! We have one of these left from when the house had rental units. Also, the ROI on kitchen remodels isn't what it was!
