For an upcoming steampunk-themed PC build I wanted some unique looking custom heat spreaders for the memory modules. This was the perfect opportunity to try out the metal 3d printing services from PCBWay. They used a selective laser melting (SLM) machine to precisely melt very fine aluminum powder to build up the part layer by layer.

Nice review thanks! It helped me get my first 3D printed Aluminum part done (have done silver jewelry before via Shapeways). I made five 2.65mm x 45mm x 45mm pin grid aluminum heat sinks (total surface area of ~4700mm^2 per heatsink) to add to my ASUS Zephyrs G14 2022. It helped keep boost clocks up by +100Mhz on average during all core loads (Cinebench R23, 30min run) and helped bring down the idle temps from 42C to 37C (both temps with a laptop cooling pad with a fan). Only cost about $40 for a very unique part that can't be made otherwise. CNC option was 3x the cost.

Sadly no, only that it is an SLM machine

PCBway's CNC machining cost is about the same at $50 something USD for a small part. i kept the model simple and have taps at home to finish it off. i also saved money by making one of the more difficult parts at home on my lathe. eventually I'll get a cnc mill to be able to make a wider range of things myself. i like your heat spreaders that's pretty cool you went the extra mile to customize them.

Yea, with machining the cost is heavily dependent on the geometry. Something simple, geometric makes a lot of sense to machine, while something like these heat spreaders would not make any sense.

How strong are the parts and the bonding? Do you feel you could break off a tentacle with yours fingers if you tried? Or is it closer to a CNCed part? Thanks for the video!

If they are SLM Parts, they are nearly as stong than the base material

I was scared at first, though after sanding for hours, I handled them pretty rough and never thought I was anywhere close to damaging. I'm no material scientist, but I'd say it's pretty close to extruded aluminum. Even breaking the little tabs I had for the clips took repeated bending and leverage, and those are like 0.5mm thick.

Often you also plate something with nickel first and then with copper.
