Don't apologize for being responsible with your money. Your collection is very nice. The enjoyment you get from your pens is what matters, not the number of pens or their price tags. I enjoyed your video. Thank you for posting it.

As someone who has pens worth more than a thousand, don’t let anyone snob you about your pens. The pleasure you derive from writing is the most important part of owing and using a fountain pen. Those people give the rest of us who love the hobby a bad rep! I love my Twsbi and Pilot Vanishing Point pens as well. Thanks for the great video!

It's a perfectly good collection for anyone, at any stage of fountain pen use. I know people who have been using and buying and selling fountain pens for many decades, and the pens they keep for personal use all cost under a hundred bucks, and many are under twenty bucks. Frankly, there are only haldf a dozen or so pens between three hundred and two thousand dollars that I would give a dime for. Most of the pens in this range strike me as same old, same old with a higher price tag. But I absolutely love high end pens, primarily Namiki Maki-e and Chinkin. The type I love all cost between four and fifteen thousand dollars. I think they're worth every penny, and then some. I haven't been able to afford many of these pens, and now that I'm retired I probably will never be able to afford another. . I can't say how much I love these pens, but I do know that after fifty-seven of using, owning, buying, and selling fountain pens, I still love pens that are dirt cheap. i'd be perfectly happy with a collection of pens that all cost under twenty bucks. In fact, I'd rather have a collection of under twenty dollar pens than a collection of ninety percent of the three hundred to two thousand dollar pens out there. Maybe I know too much about how those three hundred to two thousand dollar pens are made, and how much they cost to make, which is not very much for most of them, but I think that group of pens, with a few exceptions, is the biggest ripoff in the world. If I want a pen that's better in almost every way, all I have to do is put a good gold nib on a Jinhao. Or buy one of many two hundred to three hundred dollar pens that are every bit as good, and a far, far better value.

Finally! A fellow writer who enjoys good quality affordable fountain pens! Geez, I have been around too many elitists with one thousand dollar Montblancs in their collection to the point I was feeling like the last guy on earth who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a pen, yet still loves pens! Great video, please keep it up!

Suzie Overman yes. There are tons of collectors that are exactly like that. I pretty hate them. Some of them that have Montblanc 149 don't even know how to use that piston filling system and keeping them inside the rotten box for years, just for a home furniture...... And only bring em out to an important meeting in the office, just for a fashion.

I won't hate them "collectors" if one of them would be my dad/uncle/grandma who saved it and is now giving it to me as a gift. But for real though, that's the beauty of a fountain pen, is that it's pretty much timeless, something you can pass down.

Your comment is right on point. There are many of us who enjoy writing with our fountain pens, yet do not have large budgets to operate with. It is a wonder how many nice fountain pens are available for us on limited incomes. How do I know this? I am a budget pen collector who lives on a fixed income. Unfortunately there is something called FP snobbery, and if you are not secure in who you are, it can be intimidating. Once you settle within yourself what you can afford, it will be a wonder in what is available for you within your budget. Don't go broke trying to keep up with others.

Unfortunately, many true collectors can be a bit persnickety, and look down on pens that are not in a certain price range. I've learned to ignore them, for they are not sending me any money in order to invest in those high-end pens. I enjoy what I can afford, and take pride in my collection. Enjoy your pens as well!

Just FYI - the term demonstrator and distributor are describing the same thing though distributor is a little older. Both are correct however. Clear pens were originally used as sales tools by "distributors" to "demonstrate" the parts and quality of a pen. Later they were sought after by collectors and companies started selling them to the public. They are both historically correct terms but demonstrator is more common now.

Wonderful video and collection! I have the bug on collecting, and using, Fountain Pens. So far, my most expensive pen is the Ahab flex nib. It really bothered me when you stated how people have rudely criticized your other videos. It's a hobby. It's your hobby. It's our hobby. Why do people, nowadays, have to be so judgemental and harsh criticism? Continue making videos, so that we can enjoy and appreciate them.

Just going to let you know some things- it's totally cool that you didn't know them! Part of the fountain pen experience is the education side of it and I find it a lot of fun :) 3:15 I haven't ever heard any pen called a distributor pen for being transparent. Hmm. I've only ever heard demonstrator! They are so neat though when you eyedropper convert them so you can see that ink slosh around. 4:45 The lamys are some of the easiest to swap the nibs on, however, if you pull the nib unit out you can usually swap many other nibs. You don't have to swap whole mechanisms, it can just be the nib sheet itself. Jinhao x450, Jinhao x750, Monteverde Invincia, Conklin Duragraph, Noodler's Ahab etc. You can use a goulet nib for these too which is very nice :) 7:25 The Lamy Al-Star is made from aluminum :) 8:00 Hehe, the Pilot Kakuno's are actually for young elementary students in Japan but they are so adorable! I think it's hard to resist them at any age. 14:55 The Pilot Metropolitans SHOULD all come with a con-20 converter. Granted, they aren't the best converters but you should get a converter with them. They use a squeeze mechanism. 20:00 The kind of mechanism you are thinking of is called a piston filler :) 21:00 The Twsbi's are very well respected budget pens in the fountain pen world. Even though they are cheaper, many of the pens you have listed are still VERY well respected. TWSBI especially seems to be loved. 26:35 I can't wrap my brain around it sometimes on the fact that there are water based inks that are permanent. If you were to use a calligraphy ink or pigmented ink (non nano-pigmented that is) it would clog up your fountain pen. Happy fountain pen hunting! :D

Your Jinhao X750 "Night Sky" pen looked so good to me that I immediately went to eBay to order one. $13.50, delivered. In some ways, it's a more attractive pen than the Sailor Procolor, Seasonal Color Edition, Stardust in Sparkling Blue with stainless steel nib and chrome appointments. The sailor cost me over four times as much as the Jinhao. I can't wait to compare the two!

As s pen collector, that has not always been the case. Yes, as a matter of course gold nibs are smoother, but that has not always been every one's experience. How well I know. Thank goodness you can afford high-end pens. Know that everyone cannot, so we can be thankful that there are pens available for every wallet. What really blows the mind is when you want buy a pen, and still have enough money left to pay your bills without going into debt behind a fountain pen.

About 40 years ago I really enjoyed a fountain pen but no one seemed to know how to clean them...neither did I. Now that there is KZfaq and I can find a tutorial on almost anything, I am thinking of getting another one. I like to journal but also sketch Yes, the price has gone up but then quality is worth a lot. The interchangeable nibs are a plus. Thank you for showing us your collection. Ya know, you mentioned the caps escaping… I understand everyone’s desk and usage is different, but it just dawned on me that I’ve never had a cap sitting on my desk run away, but I have had caps that didn’t post very well jump off the end of the pen. Surprisingly, I’m thinking of my Pilot MR right now. Most of the time the cap posts fine, but every once in a while, it just gets a little loosey goosey and tries to run away. Another point is about the Capless/Vanishing Point: I got a Majohn (sometimes branded MoonMan) A1 for about $40 and I carry that one around clipped to my collar. It’s a lot better than worrying about a hundred and fifty dollar pen getting scraped or damaged, and it really does write nicely.

Nice collection; an interest approach to FP. I have both pricy and inexpensive FPs; all of them are valuable to me. We are unfortunately inclined to match quality with price, that sometimes we overlook and underrate that "so-called" mismatches. I' m using a worn-out vintage Vector now, which can overperform many pricey pens around. That illustrates my point; so does your collection.

This is the first time I've left a comment, but I've watched and enjoyed many of your videos, including this one - and I've just ordered myself a pen case like yours! I've got a handful of fountain pens - the Lamy Safari of course(!), a Parker 'Urban', a Caran d'Ache 'Dunas', a Pilot Metropolitan Retro Pop in blue like yours, and my indulgence, a Lamy 2000. After Amazon did a terrible job of packaging the Lamy 2000 I've resolved to pay a bit more and buy pens only from reputable specialists from now on, like Goulet Pens. I really enjoyed seeing your pens and knowing what you thought about them, and the inks too. It's a steep learning curve, but fascinating stuff. Thank you for sharing this and your other videos! :)

Unfortunately, I tried those Vanishing Point and with my grip, that pen don't work for me and I exchange for Pilot Custom 823. Look forward to more of your videos!

I used to have just jinhaos but I tried other pens and just couldn’t go back, I’ve had a lot of trouble with most of the jinhaos I have/had. Any jinhao recommendations?

as a newbie for the fountain pen world I actually find the light weight of the lamy safari helps I'm so used to putting alot of pressure on the pen as I write and it is super easy to forget that you don't need to do the when you're using a fountain pen

I write with the cap off so I could barely feel the pen in my hand because it feel so different that helps to remind me not to dig in like I would with other pens

I'm relatively new to the world of fountain pens, but I quickly feel down the rabbit hole. At the moment I have 5 Pilot Metropolitans, all in different colours, and one TWSBI Eco. I use my pens for work and school, and I'm rather content with what I have, though I want to get all the colours of the Metropolitan.

Nice collection I love the color of the Jinhao X750, it's gorgeous, maybe I'll get one too. I've recently got myself Lamy Studio and love it. It is really nice upgrade over the Lamy Safari. I do like that the Studio is almost twice the weight of the Safari, it feels much better when writing and in the overall build quality. But at my work I frequently need to cap and uncap the pen so I really do like and the practicallity of the Vanishing point. Unfortunatelly in my country it costs over $200 which is too much for me to pay for a pen and it never goes on sale.

Your evaluations make complete sense.I have grown weary of so many fountain pen "experts" focusing on luxury brand names, while (usually) ignoring the brands and prices that most of us are drawn to. I recently heard a pen aficionado describe a $300 pen as "...worth every penny..." Well, not to me, and I would wager that such a price is beyond most of his viewers, who probably also believe it beyond logic that a Pilot 823 is 20 times better than the Pilot Metropolitan. IMO, this is how traditional fountain pen users reason. BTW, very well done video.

I am just getting started with fountain pens and love them! I am so novice that I don't even know what I don't know and need to limit myself. I have an obsessive compulsive type personality. I already have enough crafts to drive my family nuts so I don't really need to come up with a new compulsion. I am already 64 and won't live long enough probably to use all the journals I bought this year. I'm a sucker for a great deal and found some great ones when 2016 came along and then closeout sales hit. :) Thanks for making this video I appreciate your sharing your view. I am sorry to hear that anyone has bothered you in the past. They were free to watch or not. They can share their views on their own channel if they have something negative to say it can be done nicely without attacking anyone else for their own views. So far from watching videos I am finding that I am already finding that I probably will not use cartridges anymore unless I am out of the house. I want a pen with a twist converter, your mini twizby (sp?) looks like I would absolutely love it. It would have to be purchased at a great discount on ebay if it is very expensive. I will use what I have until I can't stand it anymore. :) Your idea of matching ink color to ink pen color is one I could see myself doing while I journal. I also loved the idea of the ink that only shows under a black light for those sensitive subject journal pages that you don't want anyone else to read. I would maybe then draw something over the writing so it looks like that is the reason for the page. Thanks again for a nice video! I'm going to subscribe so I see what you do when you thin down your collection.

I have a variety of fountain pens ranging from very expensive ones to more workhorse pens that are very affordable. Most of the expensive ones stay in the case but the Lamy Safari, Pilot Metropolitan, and a few Preppies are always doing work. When I need to look pro you can use a Jinhao, they look pricey, work well, come in various colors. After letting co-workers use my Waterman's or Mont Blanc and having to replace nibs for over $100, the pricy pens usually stay at home and in a case. They are nice but when you need to get work done you don't usually wear a Tux. It is not important what you write with but that you write, draw, and create.

Yeah same think in the Traditional WetShaving Community. A lot of ppl have like over 20 brushes, 50+ soaps and like a ton of Safety razors but at first I had over 20 then I was like I know what works for me and then downSized to about 10 of my favorites. This way I can have a decent rotation. I have 2 pens so far a TWSBI Eco and a Safari and only plan on getting about 3 more

I, for one, really appreciate your criteria - affordable and quality. I have several of the pens you've highlighted, but I also keep a handful of Platinum Preppys on my various desks! If I'm carrying them around, I don't worry about losing them. There was a time in my life I would have dropped multi-hundreds of dollars on a collectible. But as I have matured, I prefer better value for the dollar. My small collection does match barrel colors with ink - and I do prefer and recommend it. I color code at the office and in my planner, so grabbing the right color is important to me. I don't have a vanishing point, but that might be the next (and hopefully, most expensive!) future purchase. Thank you for your videos!

I just bought two Vanishing points for, and get ready... under $80 on ebay brand new from overseas. It's taking a but of time to get here in California, but that is a steal.

I think the invisible ink you mention using in your journal is Noodler's Blue Ghost. It's only visible under uv light. Firefly is the yellow highlighter ink.

Nice affordable collection. You should try some in the 20-40 USD range there are some amazing pens in that range. BTW Jinhao cost 1-2 USD if you buy them at a local office supply store in China. I have been spotted leaving stores in China with up to 10 new pens (bought for less than 15 USD :)

Just a small add on to Lamy. Not all Lamys look the same. There are others at least in Germany but for sure elsewhere in the world too. For example have look at cp1 line. It fits well into an enexpensive collection, at least the black one. I'm with you that it is extremely easy to change nibs. Here is the range: * Z50 polished steel: A (Beginners), EF, F, M, B, 1.1mm, 1.5mm, 1.9mm, LH (Lefthand) * Z50 black steel: EF, F, M, B, LH * Z52 black steel bicolour: EF, F, M, B * Z55, Z56, 14c Gold bicolour: EF, F, M, B, OM, OB * Z57 14c Gold bicolour black: EF, F, M, B, OM, OB If you ever wanted to upgrade e.g. a Lamy Safari to a gold nib, it would be possible. Therefore Lamys are the most versatile fountain pens, I think.
