The cross winds were a little high, 12 knots. gusting to 19 @ 70 degrees from the east across the runway. After taking off, it became evident that this was going to be a challenging flight. It was getting late and I expected conditions to improve as time went on. I made several passes as my son tried to catch the action from the ground. My first attempt to land resulted in a sudden drop of about 20 feet as I had pulled to much power and got behind the curve. I immediately recognized my error and attempted a full power recovery, but it was to late to avoid the resulting impact that broke a landing gear and support cable. I was however able to remain airborne and make a second attempt that resulted in an almost normal landing. So lesson learned keep that power up especially in gusty conditions and fly it to the ground.

First time I experienced vertigo by just watching a video! Please refrain from using a head-cam, although it shows that you are extremely vigillent in maintaining situational awareness while flying! While no serious damage occurred to the pilot speaks volumes to the robustness of the Affordaplane! Thank you for sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of ultralight flying in that it's not always calm and clear blue skies, and we have the ability to choose not to fly when conditions become questionable. Glad that you are Okay, and your ultralight is repairable! Once again, thank you for honestly sharing the good, the not so good, and the ugly that is ultralight building and flying! -E-

So I built one of these things 14yrs ago. Out of the gate I did not think the landing gear was sturdy enough so I built 4130 bungee legs for it... Added some weight but worked good. Another thing the guy that taught me to fly ultralights said "I fly at 45 and land at 55mph". In other words he taught me to fly the plane all the way down to one foot off the ground, if everything looked good cut throttle and let it settle onto the ground. The other upside to this landing method is that if something isn't right you are not trying to flog an engine that has "loaded up" from idling down on final.

Glad to see you escaped relatively unscathed Terry! I've been tossing around the idea of building a plane like yours here but< the landing gear has always been a concern. Something about that small diameter landing gear just doesn't sit well with me.. I'm surprised (and confused) you don't hear more stories about people having trouble with it! It'll take me awhile to gather up the materials considering today's price and availability. If they don't amend the plans by the time I am to build, I am most likely going to increase the size of the tubing used in the landing gear in my build!

I agree with the comment from chinaclipper1, the air disturbance from the train plus the crosswind made everything more complicated on this crosswind landing procedure. Glad you are OK and I hope that the repairs were not too complicate and I agree also that this airplane should have some kind of shock absorb system to minimize situations like this. Another comment is about the video, try to install the camera in a location that it stay fixed, you move your head to much and the video becomes a little annoying.

You did a nice job building that plane. Sorry you broke broke the gear. Glad you’re okay. I’m not a fan of those helmet cameras. It’ll be interesting to see how you will repair the landing gear making it more resilient. Either that or only early morning or evening flights. Have a great day

Feel sad to the incident and however happy to see you safe... sudden right side drift on the air before touch down and consequent left side alight caused left landing gear bang. May avoid to land while on any train moving near to the runway to avoid any untowards incident.

Looking at the video, I think the big problem was the train and cross wind together. The air dragged by the train would make it turbulant and also become almost a tail wind and all that would produce a wind shear to the gusty cross wind. I would recommend not landing a at least 2mins after a train has gone through the same as wake turbulance from a large aircraft. At least you managed to keep it to monor damage.

@affordaplanestore

Yes there was a number of mistakes I made that day, first I was flying in high winds 16mph+, I was too far back on the power and the train was producing turbulence as well. Live and learn!

Hi there yes nicely rescued , what cased the plane to drop suddenly ? did you hit some sink or did you loose air speed near the ground due to the cross wind component , ie relative wind no longer on the nose . Good to post this , always interesting to see analyse and learn. Happy flying best regards Rob.

From the looks of things, I think that when you tried to make that first landing while the train was passing, you were in too steep of a dive too close to the ground and when you hit the ground it was obvious that you had did some damage to the left side strut, because it looked a bit crooked when you went back airborne. Either way, I'd say that you were extremely lucky that you didn't veer into that moving train.

Glad you made it out okay with just a bent gear leg. I did the same thing to my spitfire in a hard landing. I really enjoy your videos but it's almost dizzying watching your videos from the helmet cam lol. I would almost be willing to buy you a fixed camera mount. If you solid mounted your camera you would have some awesome videos. Currently building and afford a plane. In the very beginning I had the pleasure of meeting the designer of the affordaplane when it was still in development. Happy flying

I think the artificial breeze caused by that train gave you a tailwind that you didn’t want or need. You lost some lift and that was all she wrote.

Inexperienced. Period! Looking for something to blame it on other than himself. Came in way to steep and slow for the strip. He should have been prepared for a day of touch and go. Instead he pushed it for none other than wanting to fly way too soon without learning to even taxi or get ground control over the plane. He is lucky to be alive...

Landing Gear should have some kind of flexibility built in to them, (Springs, shock cords or lower tire pressure) what ever will give on a hard landing. Not cables, cables are not made to flex. And watching the video, Would someone please Tie up the dog at the end of the run way, he runs out ever time you went by.
