To be fair, USSR never wanted to conquer Afghanistan. Their strength of their army in the country at that time was about 2-3% of the whole potential of the Red Army. They just treated it like a sandbox where they could test new weapons. Sadly they never gave a fck about their soldiers, so they died actually for no reason

Its just the terrain of Afghanistan which is impossible to conquer otherwise you should see the 1960 Bajaur Campaign when a powerful Afghanistan invaded the tribal areas of Pakistan. Pakistan in retaliation bombed the crap out of the Afghan soldiers with the superior American (Sabre) jets and literally pushed them back in Afghanistan. Pakistan Air Force was ordered to bomb the Afghan cities of Kandahar, Jalalabad and even Kabul but then the Afghan PM sent a peace message to the President of Pakistan Ayub Khan. Both met as both were Pashtuns (ethnicity) and decided to end the conflict.

I think the US-Vietnamese war is more pointless. in the Soviet-Afghan war there is not even an approximate part of the victims that were in the war between the USA and Vietnam. plus, the war crimes of the Soviet troops in Afghanistan are nothing compared to the war crimes of the Americans in Vietnam.

The reality is the Afghan mujahideen did not defeat the Soviets on the battlefield. They won some important encounters, notably in the Panjshir valley, but lost others. In sum, neither side defeated the other. The Soviets could have remained in Afghanistan for several more years but they decided to leave when Gorbachev calculated that the war had become a stalemate and was no longer worth the high price in men, money and international prestige. In private, US officials came to the same conclusion about Soviet strength, although they only admitted it publicly later. Morton Abramowitz, who directed the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the time, said in 1997: "In 1985, there was a real concern that the [mujahideen] were losing, that they were sort of being diminished, falling apart. Losses were high and their impact on the Soviets was not great."

"like men like heroes" most brainwashed thing ive ever heard, the US did far better than the Russians in Afghanistan, Russia sent a way larger military force into Afghanistan and still lost the US only had 1% of their army and still lasted for 20 whole years, the US with 1% of their army still controlled far more territory in Afghanistan then the Russians ever could, even the Russian Soviet Union collapsed after their loss in Afghanistan the US never collapsed, the only difference is is that the Russian loss in Afghanistan is far more embarrassing than the US, also imagine being Czech with no military history and you lost in Afghanistan as well and you lost to Germany in WW2 and needed the US to save you
