Afghanistan: RAF pilot reveals near miss on the runway at Kabul airport

2 жыл бұрынAn RAF pilot has revealed his aircraft nearly smashed into a bus carrying evacuees at Kabul airport, as he was taking off.
Wing Commander Kev Latchman revealed military air traffic controllers had been praying for him when they saw his C-17 transport aircraft hurtling towards a line of three vehicles that had taken a wrong turn while trying to reach another evacuation flight.

There is a lot of blame to go around for a lot of things but the evacuation of 100000 people from a war zone without any incident is just an unimaginably amazing job by everyone involved. that one incident with C17 became the face of the operation just because people failed to understand how desperate the situation was and why it is a miracle that only one such incident occurred.

Nothing cowardly about the RAF evacuation of Afghan people from Kabul airport - I think the cowards are the Afghan Military who gave up as soon as the Brit and US forces started leaving Afghanistan... Those are the cowards.

Though not ideal, it's temporary.They are the lucky ones - they escaped not just from Taliban rule, but from extreme poverty My question was (and still is) why didn't the wealthy, predominantly Muslim countries viz Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia step up to assist ?

He made some good points during radio interviews at the time of the book launch, about the challenges his family faced and how they overcame them.

It's not that hard Unless they somehow climb to a engine if thats the case then the pilots are in serious trouble they probably have to abort and get them down or they basically lost a engine.

During the time they were evacuating people, commercial flights were closed. However there was still 1 commercial airliner operating. PIA were the only commercial airliner operating and helped to evacuate around 3000 people majority of them being non Pakistani citizens. They have also helped around 100k people with transit flights and visa on arrival
