Despite the Taliban’s promises of peace and stability, Afghanistan is on its knees. When the militant Islamists took Kabul a year ago, life changed dramatically, especially for women.
Our reporters travel to Afghanistan to find out what life is like under Taliban rule. In a small village in the rural province of Maidan Wardak, they meet Dr. Roshanak. She used to be a member of parliament and always worked to maintain cordial relations with the Taliban.
In the capital Kabul, our reporters spend time with Aisha, who used to work for a UN project and dreamed of a career in politics. Now she feels “like a prisoner”.
They also meet the desperate potters of Istalif, whose business crumbles under the worsening economic crisis. And they encounter members of the Taliban who blame the West for hunger and poverty.
Their return to power is the result of America’s longest war, which started barely a month after the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Kabul does not equal Afghanistan. It was a bubble of western prosperity while the rest of the population was subject to constant fighting and fear. It is normal they welcomed any sort of order that would end their situation. Safety (as in not getting your family killed) is the most basic human need..

Well put. First things first for all of the people. Women will win their freedoms in Afghanistan, but the change must come from within Afghanistan, by Afghan lights, and it will take time. But in the meantime, all must eat.

Then when you and your son fight back , your son is killed you are chained up in the basement, and when your neighbours ask the new man what happened he tells them you are a te****ist planning to attack them and manipulates your defensive actions into the image of unreasonable violence

The Afghan Army had 330,000 personnel and billions of dollars in American weapons and equipment, yet in the face of only 80,000 Taliban almost all of them drop their weapons, surrender en masse, or ditch their uniforms and return to civilian life. Truth is, they had everything they needed to defeat the Taliban, they just didn't want to.

That is true, but we need it step by step. first absence of war than justice and maybe democracy. The most of time people looking to much forward and to greedy. I think with peace and with the pressure from the other contries, The women will get there rights and etc. Even in the western countries the women not always have the same right. All things need time. The problem by people in the developed countries and undeveloped is like US think it right and it is true the way they are thinking, but they never think about how long time it takes from 0 to 1 for themself. Look back in the histories and look how the original people lives now and how many left?

The hardest and painful thing in this documentary is, this doctor is one of our relatives. Served in the local clinic during the Taliban government back in 1990s (the only female doctor in entire province) and then during all this period. Let us not take it to the politics here, but she spent all her life serving to the women - it is clear and obvious that we need women doctors in our society as a Woman in that culture and society cannot tell about some of their sicknesses to the male doctors (you know culture) and hopefully girls are allowed to study and work as soon as possible. Communities requires women, I don't know where them "Taliban" are getting that from not to allow girls to go to schools. Islam and Quran says it louder "Studying and learning is obligatory since you open your eyes until you die to every single human being." The countries they look up to, not what we say - they allow freely women to study, work, and have their own freedom, then why the only country on earth do not do this?

They follow the hanafi school of thought and that will be quite different than Saudi arabi, Qatar in terms of rulings(like should women drive, go without a male family member) A good example: in hanafi fiqh women do not require permission of wali(father, brother) for marriage but in hanbali fiqh which is in saudi and neighboring countries marriage is invalid without the consent of male guardian I dont think any non arab looks at them (arabs) for governance purposes after the fall of Baghdad Yes they have to check and balance what is being teached in the political science in womens equality chapter They have to look for the romance stories in english and remove them as well in short reframe the western curriculum which goes againt their beliefs

And not all women in free countries act like that there’s bad people everywhere but that doesn’t represent that majority. But geuss what I would much rather let women have their right to choose how they conduct themselves than force them to act a certain way and kill them if they don’t abide by YOUR INTERPRETATION of sharia law. And no one was telling you to learn from the mistakes that women make in free countries they try to teach afghans how to treat women like human beings. It is just pashtun traditionalists not wanting to change their way of life. Whether it be communism or capitalism or consumerism or liberalism, they simply don't want them. The country had been racked by war for 44 years. It hadn't been able to feed itself since shortly after the Soviet invasion. It has relied on massive US spending to keep itself going for the last 20 years. We jerked the carpet out from under Afghanistan a year ago, blocked development aid, confiscated its foreign cash reserves, put it under sanction, and ostracized it. Do you really blame the Taliban for having created that situation and for not having been able to fix it within a year?

@@myahsoodinim8570 When the TB took over they wanted to kill everyone who worked with organizations from abroad. They impose litterally their religious believes on others. You can do so, but then don't complain that other countries won't help you. The US first went in to get revenge for 9/11, if that was smart can be a discussion. But most other army's came in to rebuild and keep people safe so a generation would be able to grow up educated. And read more books instead of this single religious one. We all wanted the country to be stable, some even suffered their life for it or still suffering mentally. Only they say as well some weren't willing to fight for it. And being traumatized rather chewing qat all day... As long as the women prefer boys because they are able to fight the different cultures inside this area will keep clashing all the time.

@@mohammadmainulhossainkhan5476 Maybe because they searched for a guy called Osama and a group of terrorists who operated outside their borders. While Afghanistan did nothing to prosecute him. So as government, play stupid games win stupid prizes. The bombing is done to prevent deaths from people who came to help and the battle is mostly won in the air. They tried to change it in a democracy because it is the worst system except for any other system. Lots of NATO countries were personally asked within the government to help the peacekeeping and rebuild the country. So when there is a risk the NATO brings protection with them, that were the rules of engagement Afghani's aggreed with. The idea that cultural change happens over 20 years is just imagination, it will take at least some generations. Also I spoke some refugees and a women activist of the group protesters, who can't study anymore, and they don't feel safe because they now see trigger happy bad guys on the street, instead of some well trained military. Imagine what you would do if everything you did gets destroyed and this person comes to beg for help... than you would let them complain but know you held up your part of the deal. Exactly what NATO is doing. So complaining and blaming doesn't gonna help, but together work hard might do...

Still don't know why god chose one illeterate guy in the desert to send Gabriël to, why not more and more often, was god that lazy or pre-occupied. What is Gabriël doing the rest of the centuries? I don't understand it, maybe you can ask your god?

@@plexoduss religion is not surprising them, even Taliban are not surprising them but the culture running from 1000's year are doing in some part of Afghanistan not all of them. Your knowledge is very little on this topic, the woman who talk about the woman rights actually plans for the asylum in the west and those documentary /reports make their case easy. But its in the favour of Westren media and ignorant society to blame others.

Thank you DW for giving us this perspective and for talking to these people in person. As an American, I am often praying for the peace and prosperity of Afghanistan. This government is oppressive to their women and they will not succeed if they do not relent from doing that and let these blessed and magnificent women study in college so they can be the next Marie Curie. Much mineral wealth in Afghanistan, I hope that God will protect it from greedy foreign investors and that He will use it to build up their society for good.

Sanctions are as much brutal as the regime is... I don't see any difference between the regime under sanction and the regime imposed the sanctions. We are murdering Afghan poor kids and girls. It's isn't it really "Give them death till they're given liberty."? We have Afghanistan under sanctions on trade, finance, travel, commerce and development aid. We've made human rights a condition of lifting those sanctions. That is strangling the economy and reducing the country's ability to feed its citizens - just after a war, and during a drought. That conditionality has already started to kill a few men, women and children. The Taliban are largely to blame, but we're are nevertheless saying "Give them death till they're given liberty."

I'm Muslim and I don't support Taliban. Talibans are extremists. They're the people who make Islam look bad. It's completely ok for a woman to study and work in Islam. In face, it is compulsory for woman to get education be it scientific or religious. The Prophet's wife was a businesswoman. It's not ok to force people in Islam. People have the choice to do whatever they want. Telling someone something or preaching things are ok, but not forcing. Islam doesn't support killing too. However, under circumstances, it's fine to wage a war. I even wonder what Quran did the Talibans read. I feel like Talibans are just insecure, they want to control women in every aspect. So are many Muslim men! But that has got nothing to do with Islam! They twisted the religion in their favor.

I am an Afghan and let me educate you guys on something that is very important. In Afghanistan these women who wants all western rights and values represent maybe about 1 or 3 percent of the women in Afghanistan. Majority of afghan women in all over Afghanistan has no issues with how they live and are happy. If the afghan women is not interested in how you want them to think and function they the hell are you guys stuffing these western values throw their throths. leave them alone

@@myahsoodinim8570 nah Man its crazy how the whole word makes a mistake when they talk about the lifestyle and the wants and needs of afghan women. The afghan women on majority is the same women that she used to be hundreds o year ago, for them nothing has changed in regard of how they want to live or any big change in their values. Afghan women on majority wants to hide their faces from the men, don't wanna go out without their male, extreme or lets say radical Islamic ideology and not wanting any significant change in how they live except for their economic situation. The women that you see on TV are in minority, they have adapted these values and way of thinking after 1919 when Amanullah Khan got independence and brought western values to Afghanistan and from then until Americans left the afghan women who have western ideology were in minority and they were always shown on the TV screens as if they represent the majority afghan women. You will not find any other country in the whole world whos thinking and lifestyle is so backward and hasn't changed for hundreds of year but that is the truth about Afghanistan. British, soviets and Americans came to impose their ideology as they have been succefull all around the world even the Islamic countries with extreme and radical Islamic ideologies, they have been successfully their but not in Afghanistan and I am sure if any one tries it for 1000 more years the afghans wont change.

1 or 3 percent? During the American/NATO years, Kabul and other big cities got used to a more western way of life (relatively). It seems that what you're saying is mostly true for rural Afghans, but not the urban areas which def represents a higher percentage than what you're saying. Also, women being educated = "western values"? Literally even Saudi Arabia educates women. As does Iran. If most Afghan women want to live as you say, no one's stopping them. But the Taliban has stopped careers and educations of thousands of women who are now without prospect. Also, if a woman wants to go for sexual and pregnancy related health issues, wouldn't it be more modest to have female doctors?
