Do you quite fancy wild camping but you're a bit afraid? Afraid of getting attacked - by people, or by animals? Maybe you're more bothered about the cold or worried that you won't get any sleep?
Ssssshhh... Maybe you don't like the thought of the lack of bathrooms..?
Worry not, I'm here to help.

****Sleeping kit list for those of you who are interested:
Hammock: DD Hammocks "Frontline"
Tarp: DD Hammocks "Superlight Tarp" 3m x 2.9m
Underblanket for hammock: DD Hammocks "DD Underblanket"
Sleeping bag: PHDesigns custom bag because I'm too short for off-the-shelf bags (but I really want a hammock-specific overquilt!)
Sleeping bag liner: some cheap cotton thing off the internet

I have numerous wild camping memories. I had a Phoenix Goretex bag, and an army surplus sleeping bag. I was paranoid about being spotted and asked to move on (I'd had my share of shotguns waved in my direction as a rambler). One time, I rode onto a disused airfield near York, and went deep into the woods. Early the next morning, I felt a heavy hand on my chest, and woke with a start. I slowly unzipped my bag, expecting to see an angry gamekeeper... ...but it was a pheasant, sat on my chest! Camouflage successful, I think. Full of adrenaline, I couldn't get back to sleep, so packed up and left, when I had a fox run alongside my bike for maybe 150m before darting into the undergrowth, and I rode on for an early morning (and cold) wash on a slipway in the Ouse.

Love your video, you are funny. This is my dream to do wild camping in the uk. I did it once in Australia two years ago with a friend and since then can't stop thinking about it. Thank you so much!! I've camped (not wild camped unfortunately - too many fires!) in Australia and I know what you mean about the possum! And the birds - so loud! Here we have crows that are equally noisy but less exotic (to me). Thanks for subscribing and your lovely comment. 😍

Such an engaging video - love the friendly conversational style! I think I'm about the same age as you so it's great to see not all wild campers are in their early twenties! Not sure it makes me want to wild camp though. A campsite with some facilities and a nice country pub next door gets my vote. As for axe-murderers, if someone wanted to chop up someone in a tent they'd probably head for a campsite anyway as likely to have more success!

This was such an excellent video and came at a time when I needed to see it! I'm going to be winter wild camping in a few weeks, by myself, and have been researching and fretting about it endlessly. I do it all the time when I'm bike touring but this time I'll be just hiking in from my car into the forest, and one of the things that I haven't been able to get over is the fear that someone bad is going to see my car parked alongside the road and then come in looking for me. But I just realized I'll have my bike with me in the car!! So I can load up my gear onto the bike, leave the car behind and go an easy 5 or 10 minutes ride from it before I pop into the woods. That feels much safer and I know I can totally do it. And Santa is even bringing me a bivvy bag! Thanks so much for the awesome video. For anyone else overthinking this you might also want to check out the video Sarah put out on @FitforAdventure, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pL2Ya5Wi0Niag6c.html. I think you ladies are kindred spirits.

Love your personality, made me laugh at times, but very sound advice. Couple of things though, yes you will have strange encounters with weirdos sadly, I have had two dodgy experiences and I Wild Camp with two very large K9 dogs. My advice is go more remote as possible, the further you are away from people the better. Also try and reduce light because light can travel miles away and pinpoint your location, so minimise torch and hammock light. As for wild animals, I camp across a black panther in 2009, im sure you have seen reports of big cats being spotted in the UK so always be on your guard, especially at sunset and sunrise in wooded areas that are remote. Finally before sunset and you settle plan a bug out/escape route just in case you have to move quickly, hence have your gear tidy and ready too. Remember the biggest enemy is your mind, shadows and noises always look and sound bad at night. Do like I do bring two big dogs ha ha. Take care, atb Bill.

My biggest worry is waking up and finding my bike gone? Do you usually lock it up or any other useful tips?
@KajsaTylen
@KajsaTylen 3 жыл бұрын
No I don't bother locking it up as I pick spots where nobody should find me. However, in the rare case that I'm worried about the bike, I make sure that I either attach it to my camp somehow (see my video on the OR Helium bivvy) or make sure to leave something on the bike that will make a noise if someone tries to move it. One needs to be imaginative! 😃

Thanks for the video Kajsa. When did you make this trip? It looks really sunny but also crisp and cold. How cold was it? You look like you've got loads on when you went to bed. Were you too hot? It probably got down to about 5 degrees (November) and yes, I pretty much wear everything to bed and then if I'm too hot I'll take layers off. I tend to forget about my legs and feet so they're often what comes out worst if it's cold. If you need any more help, let me know, it's all good idea for new content as I never know what people want or need to know. 👍

Thanks for the info. Your video has encouraged me to look into this a bit more... I'm currently researching hammocks and tarps to add to my Xmas list. I'm hoping to wild camp with my bike next year, maybe when the worst of the winter weather is over so I can break myself in gently! There's a place not too far away from me in Kent which does wild camping and supplies you with some dry wood for a fire - it's kind of cheating I know but I've got to start somewhere.

Love the video. I gather you have the Tailfin X series rack? I do and have an XS gravel bike and don’t see how the Tailfin trunk bag would fit between my saddle and the top stay of the rack. How do you fit yours?
@KajsaTylen
@KajsaTylen 3 жыл бұрын
It's flexible so I fit it low on the seat post. I also have a longer bracket that goes between the bag and the seat post fitting that pushes the bag back further. And of course I have the dual position seat post that gives a bit more flexibility but it's fine even in the back position.

@@KajsaTylen Thanks for the quick reply. I watched your review on your Type 2 twins channel and saw you have the Aeropack which does have the optional extension rod to push the bag further out from the seat post. I have the X series rack which has its own top stay and Tailfin haven’t made an extension for that. I think you’re a little taller than me as I have much less gap between saddle and rack so it looks like the trunk bar is not for me

It's quite common to wild camp maybe only a short walk from the car, but for a first wildcamp maybe best to have a long walk first, so when you climb into your sleeping bag you fall asleep quickly . No time for iffy thoughts. Camping near the car is still possible in case anything goes wrong by walking a circular route first . Things going wrong could be a tent pole break, or an empty gas cannister. Not an axe man.

This is great. I bought a bivvy last year for a solo cycle pilgrimage from Solihull to Canterbury but I was too anxious to use it. I'm a vicar and the last thing I need is to get in trouble with the law. I'm not afraid of getting beaten up. I've broken up fights in the middle of the night at homeless night shelters in church. It's never occurred to me to be afraid of wild animals. I intended to sleep in old church porches and leave in the morning before anybody was bothered but men are seen as more of a threat than women and I was so worried about getting caught I rang ahead and the vicars invited me to stay inside instead (which was great company). On the last night I stayed in a Premier Inn which was not the experience I was looking for. Should I just do it?
@KajsaTylen
@KajsaTylen 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. That's the short answer! 🙂 The long answer is that it's a journey and I always think it's best not to stray too far out of your comfort zone and it sounds like you're getting there in a way that works for you. But I say go for it! If your biggest fear is that if getting caught, head somewhere nobody will find you. Oh, and if they do catch you, just don't tell them you're a vicar. 😅
