Күн бұрынAfrica Twin Review - After a lot of test riding other adventure bikes, (her previous bike being a 2015 KTM 1190 Adventure), Sylvi chose a late 2017 CRF1000d in 2017. Now two and half years on, she shares her 6-minute summary, as a long term owner, on why in her opinion the much more expensive and complex 2020 AT model might not be the best choice for everybody or every trip. These are the 12 main reasons to get this model regardless of what you have now. Some of the points directly compare the 2017 model to the newest 2020 model.
Sylvi rides in Sports mode 3 (S3), usually with Traction Control set to 1 (Torque 1), and with the Gravel button set to "on" (Gravel mode has nothing to do with grave4l and simply results in smoother-more-gradual auto gear changes. In Corners, she presses the R/M button to "M" to hold the current gear in and through that corner. Prior to overtaking she changes down 2 gears using the left thumb "-" button. For Technical riding, Sylvi uses the left-hand brake to create a small amount of drag on the rear disc for short periods of time and uses S1.

Well done. I'm 64 and shopping for my first bike. I've been flirting with the BMW 1200GS, but the Honda Africa twin has some great characteristics. Thanks for not rambling on and on like so many of these videos do. You keep it right on point.

Just bought this bike, but the 2018 adventure sport version! Can’t wait to get out on some trails! Those Australian dirt roads look amazing too! Will have to rise there one day

cool stuff - the advantage with the 2018 is that it has the electronic throttle servo in place from honda - so you can choose to fit the excellent McCruise if you want to!

Totally agree. KTM has a lower center of gravity and takes turns easier but very noisy and not as reliable. I have also the 2017 and I think it is 60% of a 2020. The suspension is too soft. I’m not a big guy 1.83 m and around 80 kg but sag was a bit less than the 30% at max clicks. Just came back from a suspension setup with an expert. He added a pre load ring and adjusted the rebounds. What a difference! The bike rocks The only issue I had was oil leak from front shocks at 17k (I put in it 10) and that was due to riding in few gnarly single trails. Overall this is 11/10 bike. Just a bit heavy to single trails but if you trust it and know how to use few simple buttons it is an amazing machine. Keep on the great work...

Just spent some time today in the local Honda dealer contemplating a new 2021 ATAS with the DCT. I presently own an AT with the DCT and making an extended, week or more, trip later this summer and am really desiring a cruise control. I get home and ironically run across this video giving me every reason to keep what I have. To be honest, I’d all but talked myself out of a new one. The 17 is my first AT and I fell in love with it within 10 minutes of a test ride. I’m 74 y.o. with a 30” inseam and recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, so any technical off roading just isn’t in the cards for me. That being said, the AT is one of the very few bikes that I’m absolutely comfortable on without a custom seat and/or backrest. The addition of an Airhawk with just a wisp of air in it and the occasional stand, is all I require for riding in comfort all day. As you’ve (and others) implied, you’ve got to be a near expert to properly use the numerous set up choices the latest models offer. So it would appear that you’ve assisted in ruining a sale for Honda. Then again, you’ve helped open up a potential after market cruise control sale. All things considered, I truly enjoyed this video as well as the one concerning the accessories you use on your AT. So naturally, I was compelled to subscribe. Peace

Thanks for your comment - wow 74 👏 - yes The 2020/21 model is certainly a more complex cockpit - and Honda's bike version of 'CarPlay' imo is in the "very distracting' category as they don't allow the rider to touch the screen when moving and the keypad is in 1-axis only !! It's like a 1975 video gamepad. Regarding the cruise control again Honda failed by limiting the minimum speed too high at 4th gear 50kph or more, so not suitable for residential zones or school zones. The new AT CC is Not nearly as good as the McCruise cruise control (for the 2017) we had fitted to our KTM1190 which allows CC at any speed - any gear - a fantastic add-on.

Just bought mine. Was on the fence about the automatic but let me fuckin tell ya... instantly after twisting the throttle and taking off I was obsessed and in love. The seat feels like it’s perfectly molded to everyone’s butt no matter who sits on it. Shifting with the buttons let’s you wined out the bike more but auto works just as good, like she said the power is there no matter what gear. Idk how they pulled it off but I’m totally digging an auto bike. Don’t get me wrong it’s not better or worse in my opinion they both have pros and cons, things I like and dislike but it’s a completely different kind of feeling of riding. It felt like I was sitting on a comfy saddle but driving a smooth ass boat all at the same time 😹 10/10 I’m keeping my 2017 Africa twin

Ditto I've done 15,000 miles on my 2017 DCT from new and adore it on and off tarmac. Just wish I could find a screen (I've now bought 4) that worked with my 6ft 4inch frame and high seat set up. Superb machine. Super video and lovely sunshine from watching in the rain in the UK.

I have the 2018 ATAS and think it’s even better than the 2016-17. If I couldn’t get 1n 18-19, I’d still get the 16-17 models before a 2020-present one. The ONLY thing I like about the newer models is the TFT display and I can live without that. Great review. Thanks for sharing.

Agreed - The Big issue with the newer TFT CarPlay versions is that Honda disable ‘touch’ whilst moving, and the UI uses up/down to move left or right.

Brilliant review! I own a 2016 DCT and I LOVE it. Also, I've fitted tubeless rims and that's definitely a bonus if you're going to be repairing punctures in the hot African sun.

Just a picky point, but ADV and Adventure is the same number of syllables. It's kind of like using LOL in a face to face conversation, a bit off for anyone over 25 years old. LOL. With that said, I appreciate you input and glad I made the choice to buy a 2018 AT 1000

Solid points...great review! Still I want cruise control for my cramping hand. Throttle locks just aren't a great solution. Still doesn't justify the large 2020 price gap. Cheers!

Thanks for your kind words! The McCruise electronic CC is actually superior to the factory cc because use can use it in any gear at any speed, have it on my other bike and love it. Honda should change their 2020 to allow 3rd gear at least.

Great review, you would have sold me one, DCT and all if I hadn't just purchased my GSA 1250 ha ha ha, no regrets mind you but at least if the big girl lets me down, I know which bike to go to. Have to say that the quick shifter helps to mitigate some of the issues you mention and that boxer motor keeps both the heat and weight down low.

Good points, thank you! Personally I did not like the suspension of the 1000AT. It is much better on the new model (for my peronal taste). Cruise Control is a huge plus for me too. And then the prices ... the difference to the 1100 model is less then 1000€ in Germany. Currently you get an CRF1000 DCT for about 12790€ and and an CRF1100 DCT for about 13590€. If prices were lower for the older model, I definitely would think about it because you made some very good points to think of. Drive safe. Best regards from Germany.

thanks for your comment Solus !! yes Suspension - I also never keep the original springs because I ride with luggage (panniers, tent, food et al). Pre-load alone cannot adjust for it correctly. I prefer to install progressive springs (HyperPro) rated for a taller(heavier) rider combo, and slightly thicker fork oil too. Springs are actually cheap for both bikes :) - I am comparing a used 2017 to the new 2020 and you can find it for almost 55% of the price here. imo McCruise CC is actually superior to the factory CC because you can hold 40kph 2nd gear in school zones to keep your license points, i wish Honda even allowed 3rd gear for the 2020 cc but they did not (60kph 4th gear >) - enjoy your 1100!

@@2Meerkats I am not sure what motorcycle to go for. I love the design and sound of the AT but KTM's 790 Adventure R is also a strong competitor for the top spot on my wishlist ... it's a hard decision to make ... :D

@@solusquinto3086 if you are taller the AT is for you. The ugly 790 will be forgotten the minute the handsome Norden 901 is for sale. The AT is by far imo the best looking Adv bike and Honda is way way more reliable than KTM from my direct experience as i already have a 790 :). One thing i found useful is to sit on 2 bikes and have a friend take a lot of photos - then look at yourself with that machine and ask do you fit that bike? is it you?

@@2Meerkats Yeah ... that's so true :D Unfortunately the Norden won't come out until 2022 ... if those rumors are true :( What I like about the 790 Adv R is this Mountainbikefeeling. For me it is a very inspiring Motorcycle. On Saturday I have another test ride with it and a friend will make some pictures and videos. For the AT I actually don't need pictures like that. Just like you said ... the AT IS by FAR the best looking of the bunch. Reliability is a big point for me too and I wish I could say that I never had problems with my 1190 Adv ... but I had :( I guess its price is the only thing that keeps me away at this point. Next week I'll make my decision ... :D

Still wonder why Honda doesn’t have an upgrade for their pre-2020 DCT models. The second (third if you count the newest upgrade) generation DCT is significantly better than the first generation (not upgradable?) version.

If you really want it buy from McCruise Australia for the 2017 and newer. They CC is actually superior to Honda because you can use McCruise in any gear and any speed! We had one of these on our KTM1190 for 8 years with no issues.

Great video and very useful, cos I am in that phase right now: which one to go for? I have a question though: you pointed out that the throttle wire will make it easier to repair. Fair enough! But what about the DCT? Shouldn't the same logic apply to that as well? Thanks!

The Honda DCT is extremely reliable in my experience. It's not new to Honda. So... How many posts have I read of rider breaking and bending their gear change levers? or burning their clutches? Many 🤣

Can I ask how tall you are? I am looking to get one, but at 167 cm, I'm concerned I won't be able to get enough of of feet down during slow or tricky situations.

I am 175cm but my body is long and my legs are 'short' for my height haha. I used the standard seat - but there is also available a low seat from Honda :)

You're absolutely right ! - the new 2020 bike takes longer than rescue helicopter to spool up and get the bluetooth2helmet running and programmed for a trip and SIRI is in mix omg. The TFT data is highly distracting and a most of the fonts are TOO small to read on a bumpy dirt road at speed and even the trip meter and menu system UI is not as flexible as I would have expected, and even the favorites button has only 3 (haha) choices pppft.

I carry a device called an Eastbound Motowinch - about 2 kg which can easily lift the bike without me having to strain.

Once i dropped it on some slippery surface at the petrol station and 2 guys rushed over and picked the bike up before I even got up myself. People are just so nice.

@@johnscott9829 When a person in car gets a puncture they cannot lift their car up with muscles alone?... so I thought why do I need to lift my bike up? A simple winch can do it. If somebody is around we can do a team lift. Otherwise just use the Eastbound. I don't see the risk benefit of a hurt body part/back on a long trip from a hero lift. Have done several practice lifts with the Eastbound Motowinch and no issues (apart from carrying the 2kg device) as it is well made imo.

@@2Meerkats Absolutely agree. My question about being able to lift the bike was just one of curiosity. I most often ride alone and have never considered these larger bike because of the weight. This Eastbound Motowinch is a game changer!!! I've always been very impressed with women like yourself that have the confidence to ride the bigger bikes. I have never been able to find that same confidence. I have always been obsessed with, and couldn't get past, the massive weight. I see now you are on a KTM, but I'm really thinking seriously about getting the Africa Twin with the DCT. Thanks so much for the replies and the effort to may the vids.

If you change the rear spring for a progressive spring to match the combined weight of rider+pillion in rider gear it will be good. I chose the HyperPro brand myself. Then if you add boxes you can increase the pre-load :)

The best thing is the handling/DCT/reliability. Actually it’s been replaced. Mainly because I wanted a lower bike. I do miss the AT but weirdly the other Meerkat bought one! Yep he also thought Africa Twins 👯♀️ handle so well he got one.

@@2Meerkats What would your suggestion be? I have tried all three. I prefer the Hondas for the engines (stay cool in bumper-to-bumper traffic), reliability and affordablilty. Between the AT and the TA; i would have liked the TA; it's new, light, nimble and spirited but the Suspension Kit and Ground Clearance is a bit of a letdown. So, it looks like the Mighty AT. Me reservations are about it's age: 6 years. Any wear and tear issues i should be worried about? I'd rather be on the Road, than in the Garage. 🥴

@@2Meerkats Hmm. I was also thinking on the same lines; Transalp Rally Build! But that's going to take up the cost by another 3K USD. It's already over-priced here ~ 14K USD. Also; on my 390, I had off-road spec suspension upgrades (front and back with 28mm increased stroke) but I had bad experience with that: rear shock seal leaked 4 times with a 18 months. So, I'm hesitant to try that route again. Plus; here in India; getting them (international brands) serviced or repaired will not be possible. Would prefer to stay close to stock...

The suspension has to dialed in for compression, rebound and preload - ie for your weight - I am under the 80kg limit of the std factory springs so they work for me. Riders who are over 80kg need to get a stronger progressive spring on the rear and new fork springs.

campbell rousselle yes the old difference in late 2017 they changed to stainless steel spokes, to reduce corrosion reported by some 2016 customers

@@2Meerkats Cheers, have seen a cheapish, low kms bike for sale at a dealers. Might take it for a ride to see what I think. I like the look of the Africa Twin. Bit heavy, but no heavier than my Strom. Also mixed reviews online. Fortnine said it was amazing off-road, but handled terribly on a windy sealed road, whilst a Pommy Motorcycle channel said it handled better than any other ADV at the time. - Best to see for myself I reckon :)

@@2Meerkats I think the negative comments regarding handling were to do with road riding - not off-road. Both reviewers raved about its off-road ability. However, whilst the Pommy Magazine (Might have been Two Wheels) also liked the road handling, Fortnine said it was too soft, vague at the front, had crazy dive under brakes and couldn't be ridden fast on tarseal with any confidence. Do you ride yours VERY fast on tarseal? Do you think it would handle as well as an old VStrom on road? (I suppose that is impossible to answer, unless you've ridden a VStrom1000. @@actstuntcam Fortnine is a great guy, luv his videos for a laugh, but his riding style is far from Pro imo - AT is a Dual sport not a road racer Ninja, after all. However, In my view many tester riders do not take the time to setup preload (springs) and also do not check squat numbers for their test rides (ie set empty bike 10% and set with rider 30% of travel - or they never show that process being completed, usually just blah blah and they ride) - imo after years of riding it, my Honda AT handled very well on the road for a 21" front, and excellent on really bad dirt roads, Comparing it to my 17" front, KTM 790 Duke - the Duke wins on twisties, no surprise - but all I can say is the Honda wins overall of all the Adv bikes I have ridden for handling. That includes a GS, a Triumph Explorer, KTM1190 Adv and the AT. (never ridden a Vstrom)

a lot is the same with the 2020 model and even better like the dct or the electronic suspension or the possition on the bike or the ergonomic are better on the 2020 model so i didint understand why not the 2020 model the only reason i say its for sure better is the price....

Well the new ego's are not better for taller people, actually worse on the 2020, for us peeps. The added complexity of the 2020 electronics is not in our opinion really an improvement if you have a medium or advanced level or rider skill/experience - for example the Honda advert filmed in Namibia with a pro-rider who turned OFF all the electronics to achieve this fake-tech-look in the sand (he can do the same on the 2017) , then the ad infers the electronics are an upgrade haha, no, unless it's your first big dirt bike, and anyway the bike cannot save you from stalling(manual version) or stopping(DCT) in sand unless you ride in manual mode and pilot predicts terrain ahead, so our view on electronics is limited more to front ABS as the human reaction time is 500ms compared to the ABS reaction in 5ms. But all the other stuff is adding complexity without true advantage. In this way Yamaha Tenere 700 is correct.

True - so on multi-week trips I have done, I use a mixture of standing/normal sitting/feet forward cruiser style (using highway pegs - see my video Big Red Part 1) to vary seat pressure - with this system the CRF1000D ergo's and seat are great, and num-bum is non-est

Grab an Airhawk or Wild-Ass seat cushion. They make almost any seat bearable for long rides.

My 2016 seat was bloody awful. Road riding on the AT is much better if people would just pay attention to SAG as she mentions elsewhere in the comments. I changed out my rear spring and the bike was so much better, a very cheap change. I liked the soft setup she mentions here too.

Terry Cox changed my rear spring as well to 8.5 which removed all the static sag and no need for preload. Then changed front springs but have not altered valving. Obviously stiffer on road but loaded up and on tracks much better.

I use it at very slow speeds in tight or very slippy spaces, it allows me to have both feet down but still drag the rear brake. I’ve even put a curved extension on the lever so I can reach it easily.

Its rather have a hot euro 5 so its like a little radiator between my legs to keep me warm. Nothing worse than nearly freezing on a bike

@@bryantjacobdelacruz front 1/3 of my mx boots down both sides. coolest thing about the DCT is the left hand brake (see my other video for my mod) because you can hold on a hill with either foot down - not always the left foot down like a manual bike on an uphill.

Yes the late 2017 was Rev2 and now the 2020 is a major revision Rev3 - so a late 2017/2018/2019 are the same bike dry509 :)

Most of the best adv riders in Australia Add tubes fyi even on tubesless bikes - having attended big rallies like KTM/BMW you see a lot a rim smacked very hard in potholes and on rocks and bent 👀 - tubeless tires are not robust and fail to seal. On a superficial level tubeless seems easy for new riders, but I find repairing tubes is simple once I learned the technique 😺. Honda knows the real risks of soft roading and tubes 💪 are the real deal. I have seen a tubeless rider fail to air-down, fearing his rims, then loose grip in fast gravel, fish tail and medivaced to hospital with serious injuries.

For Pillion I recommend you change the rear spring to a HyperPro progressive with a higher spring rating as the std oem spring is for 80kg total. Rear seat comfort - when I do carry pillions they complain after about 1 hour if you sitting still - Overall it is OK but not as good as the Triumph Gel seat option I experienced in the past. Honda do NOT offer gel seat upgrades, but many people I know go to seat shops and have the foam changed to gel foam for about $200 then the original cover put back ontop. The most important thing for a pillion is to move around and for the pillion to stand up (quite safe even while moving above 50kph) every 30 mins for 30 secs. Doing this and the Honda seat is 100% OK.
