Part IV in a series. Historians Florida Yeldell and David Drayton talk about the short-lived but highly important Reconstruction Era that followed the Civil War, when occupation by Federal Troops ensured that freedmen were able to vote and run for office. In Georgetown, the Fusion Plan divided up local and state offices, with Democrats (whites) and Republicans (blacks) agreeing not to run against each other. This plan lasted until 1900, when a murder on Front Street nearly caused a race riot.

I cannot express how wonderful this series is. Its incredibly well researched and executed. Its very difficult to explain such egregious history objectively in this day and age. But these 2 have done a fabulous job of it. Throughout these videos I've been going into side quests looking more and more into each thing they talk about. great educational stuff right here. So much they didn't tech us in school. It's a shame really. But I'm glad I discovered this so I can show my children. I also plan to take them to some of these plantations that stand to this day. We live in SC so this history is very meaningful.

They both did, and Mr. Drayton founded a beautiful, hyperlocal African American history museum in Georgetown, SC.

@@GeorgetownCountyLibr Amazing work, I never got ANY of this in school. We're all so brainwashed and dumbed down by our American propaganda education. These videos are really helping to open my eyes up even more, thanks for posting.

@@curiosityl.6261 It was called Dreamkeepers. Unfortunately, it is no longer, but the items and photos Mr. Drayton collected are part of other collections now, including our online digital library, www.gcdigital.org.

It's crazy how they were republican and we had seats in congress, and the house now there's only one senator and from what I researched there are NO black Republicans in the house nor congress today. Can someone explain WHAT HAPPENED??????

Great information. Thank you. Was Georgetown mixed with African and Native American Indian local tribes? When I see African American term.. which is a term pushed by D.C and only about 20 years old, not all people of color are African. Most are Native American. SC was heavily populated by native tribes. At some point native tribes across US states and territories were reclassified as negros. Which then over generations, many lost the knowledge of their Native American ancestry.
