My family has been in Orangeburg County and Calhoun County (nearby) since at least the early 1800s. I personally never been there and I can’t believe what they’ve gone through.

My 5th great grandfather was William Friendly from England. He settled in Dorchester and Colleton counties. 1840 Census shows there were 5 free colored persons in his house. His son, my 4th, was mulatto. My great grandmother was listed as Black in the 1920 Census but she looks Native. Her sister was married to Edward Muckenfuss and they were part of the Edisto Indian Tribe of Ridgeville. I grew up in Orangeburg

interesting to hear,.. and your grandmother was listed as "black" the same way ALL of the "natives" were reclassified to people of color, freedman, negro, black and now African American... we are the original peoples of this land that underwent paper genocide

@@jeremymoore1524 Right. African American is a huge misnomer and a disservice to our ethnogenesis seeing that we are an amalgamation of people here in America and we begin here. We aren't pure-blooded African people. We are however pure blooded Americans. We're made up of the three people here in the majority and some small groups of others who came later.

Wow! My Grandfather said our family came from Orangeburg,SC down to Georgia after the Revolution. And we are descended from a Danish immigrant who married a Native American woman. His name was Colding. We only know her first name which was Addie.

Found as far back as 4-5generations (1830s ) of grandparents/ancestors from buford bridge bamburg sc which was next to orangeburg..history is amazing

My 6th great grandfather was David Rumph Sr. A Swiss immigrant. They landed in Charleston in July 1735. With other settlers,, He and his siblings settled Orangeburg when it was called the "Township on the Edisto".

My paternal side are from South Carolina and if I recall correctly I believe the city I remember my paternal grandmother is from is Orangeburg. Just looking up anything that will guide me in learning more about my paternal family in South Carolina.

They turn Everyone against Us because of our skin color's and features. And they began working for this foreign Government to capture Us but they don't talk about how many wars We Won by fighting back... That's why we are still here today.... Not because of no imaginary slave ship.

My dad, (sharecropper child) was born in 1921 his mother (sharecropper/Enslaved), ( my grandmother) was born here also. They were farmers by nature. Schools were centered around sharecropping schedules for children! #WEARECOMINGFOROURCHECK!#~ MLK

Listen to the black lady say, "We are all equal in God's sight". The way she said that to me is like she's willing to not put too much seriousness on the atrocities blacks endured. Blacks suffered the very worst, utter hate. And it prevented them from the pursuit of happiness. It also caused unforeseen social issues that persist even today.

Does anyone have knowledge of, or connection to Barnemwell, SC? It is very close to Orangeburg. My parents were from Barnwell SC. Meyers Mill and Old Ellenton specifically. Family names are Tutt, Meyers, Simmons, and Bell. I would love to find out more about this area.

Can tu do some research on Lydia Bell Miles and Arthur Enoch Miles. Lyia Bell Acott Miles grave washed up in a twrriblw storm. That is my great grand father and grand mother. My family homw ⛪ is Bethel AME IN ST MATTHEWS BY THE RAILROAD TRACKS

I get what y'all saying but it's really not saying anything....Orangeburg is a historical city why y'all not talking about the things that matter like the first black US Marshall here in Orangeburg,sc kill buy a white mob doing his job...i seen and read it this year in the news paper black history month....Orangeburg should be a historical city but if the history Surrounded by people of color...its not historical...l'm listening to what they talking about and it's piece's of Orangeburg history......now from the 16th to early 19th century there no historical history but when black history come around you can see the timeline in history of Orangeburg,sc...my opinion

@@nylabellinger7779 I was saying when comeing in to Orangeburg in all directions you do not see a cooper color sign saying historical Orangeburg...and lil town like cowpen,sc...and Clinton,sc Lauren,sc.....so it shouldn't matter whether it's city or a town....if it's historical and got history it should be broadcast for tourists to see....and true history for our kids to see....Orangeburg don't even have a museum and that's crazy it's alot of history here...but it have been forgotten or destroyed on purpose

@@SuperPooka20 thank you for responding. Finding more info about that branch. Do you have any ideas where that branch is from? I have theories. I'm thinking Barbados or Jamaica. Found 2 or 3 of the plantations they were on in Freedmen's Bureau docs.

1:37 Not True/ lies of pale kind there are several plantations in historic Orangeburg and they were prior enslaved plantations converted to sharecropping.

It is true. What he is saying is that the initial immigrants to the area were poor whites from Europe who were fleeing religious persecution. This was in the late 1600's early 1700's. As they got established and prospered they themselves bought land and setup plantations of their own and yes they had many enslaved people working on them.

They fight like pigs amongst themselves then they say "we need to enter other lands to escape persecution ". It wasn't ILLEGAL. The continent was not a "nation". It was a landmass with lots of different tribes. None of the tribes owned anything except to squat where they were sitting. There were no laws about immigration. They fought among themselves continually for power and they had slaves themselves. Slavery was already here before Europeans arrived.

@@janetprice85Right. I believe by 1870 they started to list names. I was just searching my in-laws genealogy, his great great great grandfather was listed by name in the 1870s census. I searched for his father, who was listed as slave owner. Couldn't find his great great great grandfather's name at all in the 1860s and on back just age and number and plantation owner.
