On January 16, 2001, the Democratic Republic of the Congo tumbled into uncertainty.. The country’s president, Laurent Desire Kabila, had been sitting in his office at his marble palace in Kinshasa, the capital, when one of his bodyguards entered, drew his pistol, aimed it at Kabila, and fired several times.
The news broadcast then revealed his successor as his 29 year old son Joseph Kabila, who had yet to make a name for himself. At the time he was going to be the World’s youngest head of state.

Indeed. The snag with African history told by those who wish to portray the continent as being much gloomier than it really is, is that the jaundice is frequently subtle under the guise of not wanting to whitewash the ills of the continent. Many Africans (in my country, South Africa, anyway) fail to see through the bullshit and end up believing that the continent is beyond recovery and would get nowhere without The West. Yes, monsters like Charles Taylor, Idi Amin, Paul Biya, King Mswati, Robert Mugabe, Jacob Zuma, etc. have buggered their countries, but all is not lost, I believe.

For the most part, they just repeat stories they gleaned from a western source. Also, what passes for Government in most African countries is a group of people who are deeply entrenched in corruption. The character of most African government is greed, lack of patriotism and cluelessness about how to build a viable country. The only thing they know is how to rob the government. Nation building is least of their concern.

This isn't "African history" it's Congolese history and as a Congolese I can tell you that this man left out so many important details that any informed Congolese would know about but any outsider wouldn't but you're sat there pretending to understand it all. You won't actually understand CONGOLESE history if it's not told by a Congolese.

I'm whiter then Wonder Bread but I love this channel for the same reason. Most of the time I find any videos on African history it's either some biased info from a former colonizer or it's some white guilt/liberal guilt type of person who's version of history is similarly biased since both those groups tend to only view African politics and history as they relate to colonialism.

I have visited Kinshasa twice, both during the reign of J Kabila and after. Of course the problems facing DRC are immense, but so is the potential. What truly impressed me on my visits was the resourcefulness of the Congolese people. They can make things work even in the most hopeless of situations. And all they want and need is peace and stability. I remain confident that if those two things remain constant, Congo will prosper and will become Africa’s powerhouse, even if right now that may sound overly optimistic

How wrong can one be when you look at DRC in that perspective! The country is dead and people have lost the realities of a modern country, infrastructure development does not exist, job creation is just a myth, nothing is going on in that country and that why in the East there's war because you can only live better i DRC if you in a position of power and power is acquired by force so I don't know what good did you witness when we are the 3rd poorest country in the world, I suggest you go to the East and found out what going on than do the math. Joseph prouved that we Africans and blacks have no clues how to run a modern country and we kind of low level humans

I see the wicked politicians of the DRC have caused to hate yourself. Joseph was a wicked Tutsi dictator it does not mean good African leaders don't exist an example would be magufuli. Plus it is those same white people who are also causing war in the east for DRC's mineral resources.

I read Jason Stern's legendary book "Dancing in the glory of monsters" which discusses the wars in Congo in a lucid style. I feel heartbroken when I see this immensely mineral-rich country, although having much prospects, is being doomed by war and corruption. Hope the homeland of Lumumba will be healed from all of these turmoils.

As a former advisor to the F.N.L.A. and one who really loved Zaire/DR Congo I am to watch your history videos of Africa. I have watched probably all of your videos and am relieved to see how accurate they are. I spent a lot of the 70's and 80's in Africa and continue to hope that one day the fighting, killing and corruption will end. But I think I'm only dreaming.

Kabila's mandate had no big improvement or change in development comparing with his father's one, it led the country to chaos with wars in east which are still going on, all caused by his predecessors (especially his so-called father). Is DRC a federation state? I think it is too big for control to be in Kinshasa. This results in factions mainly tribal especially in the east who are influenced by Museveni and kagami

@@essen961 Not good. The bread cost was 15 dollars. Just for one bread.when he became president the security issues in the east increased even more. He weakened the Congolese army. When people protested about him he would kill them in public. Many people died of hunger,diseases and wars. Millions of people. There was no economic growth. No peace.not a single road or school he built.For 18 years. He was worse than this. Rape became like a sport in the DRC. Even if Congolese don't get a very competitive president, they are sure proud to get rid of him.

@African_Biographics I'm learning a lot from your documentary works. One comment I do have for the production team of this page is that when you prepare such documentaries use the earlier pictures of prominent figures mentioned in the film. For example, when you speak about @paul_Kagame's life history from his early years of 1980s, use his pictures from the then time instead of his recent one. That makes your production more natural. Apply also the same for the other people mentioned in the film. Thank you for helping me learn more about the political history of my beloved continent, AFRICA, to which I belong and the continent which belongs to me, to us, to all Africans and to all people of color.

I was In Tanzania in 1989,and Seen Zaire Ambassador and Diplomatic mission Go Without salary and Resources and Were left to at The Mercy of Country of Domicile,to do Any petty work and bring Food on Table for Their Family. Africa had Gone through its Own Challenges and All Those Challenges were part and Parcel of Greed and Selfishness and Governance. In Early 80's and 90' things were not Very Impressive and All Was not well in East Africa Also. The DRC can easily be the richest country in Africa but the greed and conmanship of the politicians cannot allow it. Most politicians in Africa thrive on the problems and misery of their people. That is the single most hurtful tragedy of Africa. Do not give up Congolese people.

I have Congolese friends in SA they always tell me that Joseph is not Laurent Kabila's son, so maybe there's some truth in it, anyway nice history, used to follow Laurent rise to power in the 90s when fighting Mobutu, would like to know the terms of Rwanda and Uganda for helping Laurent fight Mobutu.

Joseph Kabila is a fictitious name created by Paul Kagame, in order to use his pawn (Hypolite Karambe), known as Joseph Kabila, to extort the Congo of its natural resources. Joseph Kabila is not indigenous to the Congo, he is Rwandese. Mr Kagame has used Jospeh Kabila, inasmuch as Western multinationals and governments (the UK, France, and the US. All this to fund the terrorist M23 group to kill over 20 million Congolese, and commit a silent holocaust of Hutu people in Rwanda. The terms provided to Laurent Kabila was that he signed off on the annexation of the eastern region of the Congo. The plan of the multinationals, with their pawn Kagame, and the support of Museveni, was to take the east of DRC for its resources and offer it to Europe and America, while reaping personal benefits. Thankfully, whistleblowers all over the world and Congolese people are standing up. Gone are the days of Africans turning aside to allow our motherland and people to be destroyed.

Kabila son was smart .He came into power, made money and left peacefully. That is how you do it , not like Mobuto, who wanted to own the power and in the end, everything was a shame !

Joseph Kabila actually studied his Secondary School in Uganda. Not just his University. And the Ugandan Army then was National Resistance Army, NRA, not the Movement which was it's political arm.

@@estajeanette7487 You are right, my fruend. I agree, he was president for 18 years and you ask which democracy can we talk about?. I am not sick, for your own information. Kindly note that Jo instrumented the first ever peaceful transition of power in Congo. Congos political history has been hostile and the Congolese leaders starting from Kasavubu, Mobutu, Tshombe and L Kabila could not to open the door to democratic change of any sort. J. Kabila though corrupt, undemocratic with poor human rights record eventually made the world see the first ever peaceful transition of Power in Congo under his leadership . The bible say blessed be a man through whom good news comes. So Jo remains in the equation of the current historical democracy we see now in Congo. Study the history of Congo and you will understand what I mean. KK of Zambia stayed for 26 yes in power but when people cried for democracy he peacefully handed over power. I have a lot of respect to such leaders. Bad people would rather die than to yield to the demands of their subjects. Equatorial Guinea is one of them.

After that he also wanted to assassinate president Felix. That's why he was in jail. That sounds peaceful and democratic to you? What kind of union was he trying to bring among the Congolese people because in congo we don't have tribal wars like in his country of Rwanda.

Unbiased and Insightful, mostly on JK early years.3:32 what the story behind the picture,What army is that? he looks in his teens which places it in the mid to late 80's. The young man bottom right holding a stick features on another picture with him, a few things could be learnt from him should he be around today. 1:46 JK shares striking resemblance with this gentleman, just like he does with his twin sister and Father, so who is the gentleman in the picture?

Best president that country ever had, I remember when he took power the country had a mere $500 million budget, famine, no roads and 2/3 of territory occupy by Rwanda and Uganda backed rebels. he managed to kick them out, and after 15 years he handed a country in acceptable shape to another case of idiotic leaderhip who burned through the billions of dollars that kabila left in banks, and these are hard facts that anyone can lookup in the UN stats about the country; and now we have a tribal leader disgise as a head of state who just run the country like a village and everything that Kabila built is falling back in ruins...That country need some Anglophone to run it, the locals people there have the french mindset culture that's just so poor equiped and inadequate for any progress.

@@ZZMJo It doesn't matter there isn't a saint in politics anywhere in the world; America and Europe also have their share of corrupt leaders the most important thing is getting things done in a direction where things will be easier and better for the next president who will take over. That's how all these successful countries out there work, and this guy Kabila did that. He was very young when they slapped the power on him; all that responsibility and he did a very good job despite his critics' claims. I can group them into 2 categories the Mobutu crowd who in my opinion are just sorry losers, and the people in power right now who claimed and promised to do better than the guy they attacked and badmouth for almost 2 decades when they were opposing him and find out that it really takes skills to govern that country, but unfortunately they are inherently incompetent, and they are scare of the public's reaction now all they can do is engaging in dividing people by these tribal ways of governing; hoping to cling onto power that way. They keep talking about Kabila even though the guy is literally no longer president for years now. All that is because they just don't have any good record to brag about. But facts are hard and people aren't stupid it's all out for everyone to see.

Kinshasa DRC big and well constructed with good and big roads but dety to be called a city from the airport to other parts of the city not secured 😕😔 my last visit dateded September 2023
