This was Meles Zenawi, the former leader of the nation of Ethiopia and the man considered to be the leading architect of Ethiopia post the rule of the dictator Mengistu Haile Marian and the Derg.
Meles Zenawi was lauded for his shrewdness and intelligence as he led one of Africa’s most populous nations for more than two decades, steering it along the path of economic growth while clamping down on dissent.
But while he was praised for his development efforts, he was accused of concentrating power after becoming prime minister in 1995, boxing out rivals and creating a fearful atmosphere in which criticism was not tolerated and journalists and opposition politicians were jailed….
This is the story of the paradox that is Meles Zenawi, the former leader of Ethiopia and his country’s complex history…

As an Ethiopian who has lived through his rule and his unremarkable successors, all I can say is, despite his autocratic and terrorizing rule, he was an impeccable statesman. He put Ethiopia back on the map, and had the vision of a great leader. I miss the peace and stability we had under that man, RIP.

PM Meles has left a huge void on Ethiopia. Imo he's the best and smartest leader Ethiopia has had. Him cracking down on opposition and robot like leadership were a result of his way to power and the expectations for Ethiopia to self-destruct. Also, he failed to build institutions to take the country forward after him and left Ethiopia to depend on one man (kind of like Kagame). Nonetheless, he moved from a genuine place of leading the country forward from the safety net, expanded infrastructure to the expansion of free education and more. His bad internal reputation is also a result of his Tigrayan ethnicity otherwise he would be the most praised leader in the country for his remarkable achievements. Perhaps his issue was that he didnt market his achievements well, because he didn't have the personality for PR. Before his death he expressed his desire to retire from politics and seeing a good transition of power, but he was denied that by his parliament. Ethiopia would've had a different path had he retired instead of dying in power.

Comments on the video are two tho; his mother was an Ethiopian born in Eritrea and EPLF's support to TPLF's capture of Addis isn't as significant as put out (although you didnt really go into it). It was TPLF's union with the Amharas in particular and other Ethiopian rebel groups that facilitated the victory. He did publicly say that he regrets the violence following the 2005 elections. In summary: he was a soft-dictator in a bid to rapidly change his country. While dictators shouldn't be, it is in line with Ethiopian leaders (even our current Nobel Peace Prize winning PM is one). What differentiates him from his peers is his groundbreaking achievements which created a new norm for our leaders.

While he did many things that contributed to development of Ethiopia his legacy is Ethnic Federalism which divided Ethiopia alone ethnic line which as you can see from today's Ethiopia is a recipe for disaster. Constant wars. Regions have their own army and are in constant battle with each other about boarders. Case in point is what is happening in Tigray. Blocked from having access to banking, internet etc. Civilians having to suffer left right and center. Its literally apartheid system without whites being involved. The country does not even have a common language anymore as each region only teaches in its own language and some believe this is the best way to run the country. African leaders like Thomas Sankara should be the role models for Africans. Not the person you made a video about. Preamble of Ethiopia's constitution says Nations and Nationalities of Ethiopia hahahaha. That's right there are nations with a nation lol. They all have a right to succeed with Article 39 too. Its a joke model that NO OTHER country on the planet offers.

The constitutional reform brought about by Zenawi as you mentioned in the video, gave regional states the right to self-determination and the right to secession. With today's politically fragmented Ethiopia surviving ethnic clashes, I think it'd be quite easy to tap out and declare new sovereign states. I don't think Meles had a lot of choices. Ethiopia wasn't 1 unified country for most of it's history. It was mainly different kingdoms, with their different cultures. The modern Ethiopia you see didn't start taking form til Tewodros the 2nd start unifying/conquering them. He still left the nobility of these regions intact in exchange they swear loyalty to him. Word "Emperor" doesn't exist in Amharic instead, the more accurate title for Tewodros was "neguse negus" or "king of kings". This is what the modern federal system of Ethiopia is based on. Meles and the rest of the government probably saw it as a way to protect and respect each ethnic group but didn't expect the ethnic tension.

This doesnt explain Meles, who represented Africa in the international arena for many years and you added many information that doesnt describe Meles or his Ethiopia by his time...i.e Meles or Ethiopia never approached Eritrea borders to start war. This is something you want to add to misinform your readers perception on Eritrea and Ethiopia.

The Frog was indeed a dictator, criminal and committed a Genocide on Ethiopian people, except its ethnic. He deported 100k Eritreans and Eritrean-origin Ethiopians who lived for 3-generations barehand because he didn’t like their eye colour. He divided Ethiopia into ethnic federalism, which now the country is suffering civilians killing and instability of the region.

After the fall of Mengestou Hailemariam in 1991, a neo-colonial sponsored leadership installed Meles Zenawi to weild state power. Since then the Ethiopian Goverment was taking its marching order until toppled by the pouplar Abey Ahmed Ali three years ago. What was worse was that Meles and the Mephistopelian TPLF ruggle-tagele ruled with iron fist, robbed the national treasure and foster a national disunity of a toxic atmosphere unknown in the life span of that nation. By the way, his own Ambassdor during a protracted divorce regarding his saving account in hundred million dollars revealed that the money belongs to the Prime Minister. One can verify this in Virginia Court where the wife won to the tune of $3,000, 000. Doesn't this tell us something about Meles Zenawi. Your portrayal, my African brother from a different father, is incorrect.

Meles is that example of a dicator for the peoples. all the political power he clentched to, all that to play nation builder outta nothin but love for the game. in retrospect, do ppl still wanna hate that? His legacy will attest to this. The present shambled state of Ethiopia today has only vindicate his style.

Back in the day Ethiopians were amhra. Not blaming them. Other ethnicities were regarded as inferior. Issue was selfish emperors had a weak government. Meles cant be blamed for inheriting a failed shit government that keeps making same mistake. He fought for ethiopia and did his best but seemed to only favor his goons in end like the rest. At least he gave a damn about inclusion of other ethnicities....some haters claimed he wanted to build GERD in tigray and not Ethiopia. Only superiror complex amahara supremacists hate man.
