The seed oil from the Kalahari melon is fast becoming one of Africa’s top selling beauty secrets. Despite growing in one of the driest places on Earth, it is the original ancestor of the watermelon, adept at gathering and preserving moisture in a harsh environment. In this episode from his series on African Crops For the Future, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) explores some of the skincare properties of this remarkable plant, and shows why he thinks it has potential as an underutilised crop for African farmers.

Great video Gus! Really enjoy your channel.. I can‘t find a video of you talking about the Moringa tree, is it not considered an African tree?
@AfricanPlantHunter
@AfricanPlantHunter 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks - so glad you enjoy. And yes, indeed, the Moringa is not an African tree (although it is widely cultivated in Africa). Like the mango, it comes originally from India.

Always dry. The moisture in wet seeds will cause the oil to degrade.

Fabulous video. Very Interesting. Thank you. Where can I buy Citrullus lanatus seeds to grow?
@AfricanPlantHunter
@AfricanPlantHunter 2 жыл бұрын
The species is Citrillus lanatus, and the wild variety I'm referring to in this video is the Kalahari melon, which is the original ancestral variety. You can easily buy Citrullus lanatus seeds from many suppliers around the world. But these will give you the sweet red-fleshed watermelons that are most commonly cultivated. I don't know of anyone supplying the actual seeds of Kalahari melon at this stage, I'm afraid!
