In this jam-packed episode we look at Afro-Greek history and culture all the way from the Minoans to the present day! Did you know there is a town in Greece called Avato where the residents are historically black? Did you know the ancient Greeks refered to all Africans as 'Ethiopians' and the word Ethiopia comes from the Greek words for 'burnt face'? All this and more coming right up!

Very insightful and informative. Thank you from a Greek African American. I used to live in Greece and visit every summer. The vast majority of people are very welcoming hospitable and open minded. But as anywhere there are racist and judgmental individuals. Luckily there are far more just and peaceful people compared to the ignorant few who espouse hate. Thanks again! ✊🏽

Fantastic, I'm so glad you liked it! Thank you for watching and for your feedback. From a research perspective this was one of the most fascinating videos I've worked on in this series and I learnt so much about the Afro-Greek community in the process! And yes, thankfully those who espouse hate are still in the minority. Thanks again for watching!

I'd like to make a correction to your video re: during the population exchange; virtually all of the Muslim population of Greece that were exchanged for the native Orthodox Christian population of Asia Minor were ethnic Greeks who had never stepped foot in Anatolia before and didn't speak a word of Turkish. So to say that "many were African" is simply not true; most were from the regions of Macedonia, Epirus and the island of Crete. A sizable portion (90,000) of the Muslims in Greece were permitted to stay per the Lausanne Treaty, primarily in Thrace, of which the community of Avato is a part. Also per the Lausanne Treaty, 200,000 Greek Orthodox Christians were allowed to remain in Istanbul and the islands of Imbos and Tenedos, whose populations were overwhelmingly Greek since antiquity. However, due to continued persecutions and pogroms organized by the Turkish state, this population has dwindled down to less than 2,000 souls. Meanwhile, the Muslim population in Greek Thrace has grown to 150,000+. Perhaps you can cover that in your video about Turkey.

This makes me happy as a black american who always loved Greece, the people and their culture. To know many of them think highly of continental Africans themselves warms my heart. I am aware that there are racists in Greece, racism is global. But compared to America, Greece isn't that racist. I look forward to learning more so I can eventually see about moving there. Done with America.

Greeks more common culture with Nigeria than with Europe! + we were slaves under the Ottoman Empire and later many islands under British Empire! If you see a lot of Greeks are darker in skin tones as you go into southern of Greece! Many are brown as well! That’s why Europeans doesn’t like us! We are the only country in the world we have about slavery in our national anthem! The ppl who are racist are even against their own! They tried to hard to be accepted from Europeans. Do you know during Minors Asia catastrophe British, Italian and French ship didn’t accept to save Greeks and Armenians and left them die with the excuse “not white enough”? Yes as Greeks especially during summer became brown even by walking or driving! Some of them are brown anyways! So my question is: are we white Europeans? They said yes but if so then the population who is brown what are they? How can be excluded from their culture?

You're talking about the village of Avato, Ottoman records show no African slaves in the region, only a small Muslim Greek and Bulgarian population. The only clues we have is that the British brought Sudanese mercenaries in the region during the first world war which makes more sense. The population was offered to find their roots and they immediately refused. Also they don't consider themselves Greek, on the contrary they are loyal to Turkey.

The gulf of Aden connects to the Red Sea & they had access to the Mediterranean world beyond that. Super interesting to see how interconnected humans are. Love from a Somali :)

Very informative and well done video. I suggest taking the term "sub-Saharan" African out of your lexicon when referring to people and only use it when necessary to describe specific countries or places. It's a white supremacist term that began getting use in the late 70's meant to separate "black people" from North Africa and it's history.

The people of phut were a tall slender hamitic people ,more caucasoid features . The Canaanites are the Dravidians who are original Mediterranean and Sumerian people and the other canaanite people are same as pure native Americans also like Mexican natives and im not referring to the lovely Turkic or Mongolian people Dravidians were in the Mediterranean before the E3b mix. The Hittites adopted religious deities of the Sumerians also were mixed with them . Greeks texts are the only fairer that we (as black people)can have and most further furthest in time we can go to describe our people and their encounter with the greeks. Ethiopia means burnt face according to Greece interpretation at the time and more forced interpration of that interpretation today. But let's remember Ethiopian history and writings are much older than Greece, and their ancient philosophers and historians knew that. It yop'ya littirally means son of ham and grandson of Noah= Cush. Or land of gifts/gold. Happy to see afro-Greece, Love from an afro-italian!

Yeah... Interesting video but I don't see much future to the Greek Africans. It's literally impossible for them to integrate. Most of them simply leave the country or are just crossing, on Their to Germany, France etc. The few who remain face all sorts of problems... I can't see a bright future for them. Generally, I don't see any bright future for minorities in southern and eastern Europe. The society here is really conservative. People might say "Afro Greeks are Greeks". But this is more of a wish spoken out loud rather than an actual truthful and honest statement. I don't really have an interest on the subject, nor am I right wing or anything. But I am just saying that my Greek mom, saw for the first time a black man when she was 12, and she thought he was a demon. To say that the country is unaccustomed to Blacks would be an understatement. White European immigrants have a hard time fitting in, despite not being overwhelming in numbers and white. I always like to say that in recent decades Greece has two societies. The Greeks and the integrated European immigrants. And a second society of European and Asian and black immigrants, who are not staying but rather passing by. Just waiting when they'll leave. Some of them stay for years in this Gray zone, then they leave. And that's pretty sad. I remember seeing them taking the Train from Athens to cross the border and head to western Europe. There was nothing like "integration". Muslim and black immigrants don't integrate, they are just collecting enough documents and money so as they can leave. It's really something. If you haven't seen it I can't describe it. It's like some parts of Greece have become "hotels" for immigrants and refugees.

The Pelasgians (black Greeks) were the ones who populated the pre-Hellenistic maritimes including Sparta and Athens. That's right, the Spartans were not white people like Hollywood portrays them; they were black! The Hellenes (white Greeks) re-wrote history depicting themselves as the pre-Hellenistic Greeks and culturally appropriated everything from the glory of building architectural megalithic structures to mathematics. In biblical history the Pelasgians are referred to as "Greeks" due to their longstanding habitation in the Greek maritimes before the Hellenes encroached on them.

@@Paulynyc you do realize that the Mycenaeans were descendants of Stone Age Egyptians and the Stone Age Egyptians were Nilotic people, right? Your article is claiming they are not genetically related to Egyptians which completely defies logic and destroys the scientifically proven fact that modern humans originate from East Africa, not the Eurasian steppe or Anatolia. The article is making the claim of the Mycenaeans being genetically Caucasian based on Eurasian DNA from ethnic mixing, not by tracing Mycenaean’s genetic and geographic origins which come from Stone Age Egypt/Kemet. That’s like me claiming I’m Caucasian because I had ONE great grandfather on my mother’s side that was a white man and ignoring the other 90% of my genetic tree that’s African. The Mycenaeans did not originate from Indo-European or Eurasian origins because their ancestral lineage goes back to before “white” people even existed-how does that work? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Age The Stone Age was a broad prehistoric period during which stone was widely used to make tools with an edge, a point, or a percussion surface. The period lasted for roughly 3.4 million years,[1] and ended between 4,000 BCE and 2,000 BCE,[citation needed] The Mycenaeans spoke Dravidian languages which are prehistoric African in origin. Dravidian people are unmistakably very dark skin people, not white like your deceptive article ignorantly portrays by using Hellenistic art that stems from Alexandrian Greek art. Smh. What you found was another article based on Eurocentric geneticist’s attempt to align Europeans with Pelasgian history by using European DNA as their base marker. Again, that’s like me using my DNA as the source proof of proving I’m Lebron James and claiming Lebron James isn’t Lebron James because he doesn’t have my DNA.
