Black & "Latina" are not "two totally different cultures"...blackness has consistently been a part of Latino identities. Anti-blackness is so pervasive in Latino communities, that black peoples in Latinx communities are shunned and discriminated against.

Thank you. Most of us wouldn't even be our culture, if we weren't African. Look at our food, the wayyyyy we speak Spanish (the difference in accents and dialects are usually signals for linguists, bc they are so obviously African) the way we dance, our music. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Not all Latinos are black, but if you aren't influenced by African culture and you consider yourself a Latino? You're in the minority in Latin America 🤷🏾‍♀️

Afrolatino is a term to embrace both Black ancestry and Latino ancestry and it shouldnt bother anyone. I am half Mexican and half Black. I am fluent in spanish, have curly hair, and look predominantly black. I have a right to express both culturas proudly through name and not just what people see or hear. I want them to know I am both, that I belong to both. Especially being an American born child, here it matters especially because intersectionality is very much erased and colorized.

Most Latinx identify as what country there from...Cubans, Dominicanas, Puerto Rican's, Mexicans. So your argument is null of sense since it's a response to adjoining culture, nationality, heritage with one self? So yes, I am Afro-Mexican, yes I am both Mexican and African American because both cultures precedes my existence as a person. I thought that was obviously what I was referring to..

A. Angel half Mexican half Black...so you're half a race, half a nationality? you can be half Mexican half black and be full black, as there are mexicans who are black. you can be half Mexican and be half black and be half black, and be half white... as there are mexicans who are white. Mexican is not a race! neither is Latino ... some gringa can't tell me what "Latinx" (a term that no one outside of the united states uses btw) what Latinos identify as, cuz being born and raised in the motherland I know that when it comes to race Latinos use the terms zambo, mulato, mestizo and pardo... but these words alone are to hard for gringos to pronounce so, they like to dumb it down and say shit like "I'm half a nationality" seems to me that you need to get some legit info straight from Latin America and not listen to gringos of Hispanic descent and getting a very Americanized view of what it is to be a Latino ...

I don't see why it is so hard to understand WHAT being AfroLatinx is. It's the equivalent of being a Black-american. I am Afro-Latina and every time I try to explain this, people think I am mixed. "Oh, so your dad is black and your mom is Cuban?" No....my dad is black. My mom is black. My abuela is black on both sides. My grandpa is black on both sides. We were ALL born in Cuba. We moved to Miami. I think people forget that African slaves were not only sent to America, but they were also sent to the Caribbean islands, too. But, most Afro-Latinos that DO get representation are always light skinned. it's very rare to see a dark skinned AfroLatina get recognition unless you're the queen Celia Cruz. My skin color is very close to Gabrielle Union and if I am being honest, dark skinned African-Americans lack representation and dark skinned AfroLatinos. There's more to black people than Beyonce (for the African-Americans) and Jennifer Lopez (For the AfroLatinos)

Since Forever I'm going to use the first half of your example for when people ask me what I mean when I say I'm Afro-Latina!!! I agree that people forget that slaves weren't just in the states. The public education system doesn't teach enough about other countries unfortunately :/ and Afro-Latinas don't really get a lot of representation. Whenever I see any movies with Latino characters in it, they always have fair skin and straight hair.... I wish more movies would have diverse Latino characters

I wouldn't say J.Lo is Afro Latina. She clearly has a small portion of blck blood in her, but it is definitely largely overshadowed by her Taino & Spanish ancestry that are both definitely very visible. No one walking down the street passing by J.Lo would ever think she was black. That's like using Mariah Carey to represent a black American woman. LOL. A lightskinned Afro Latina would be Christina Milian or maybe Cardi B & her sister. Beyonce is a good example of a lightskinned black American 'though.

I am between light skin and brown skin. Going through life when I was younger was hard. I had to find who I was. I am currently learning Spanish. I do not speak it but I have a Spanish/New York type of accent. I have had a lot of questions about my hair cause it is big and very curly. Finish my myself was hard and now that I know who I am I love it. The Caribbean was where the slave ships went first👏🏽👏🏽. All of us Afro latinas come from the Caribbean.

I really didn't like how that one girl kept conflating black AMERICAN culture with black LATINO culture. She said as someone from the diaspora she wants to encompass all of her African roots. But we're so much bigger than black America. We're reggae and soca and samba and salsa. We're mofongo and modongo and yucca and black eyed peas. I feel like she was talking less about being afro Latino and more about being an American latino who is visibly black in black America.

People here have a difficult time trying to understand the word "afro-latino", it means Latinos with African ancestry. I come from 🇩🇴, a country with a lot of african influence. 82% of the people here are mixed & that includes african (or black). I'm an afro latina myself, & my mom's really mixed but doesn't have a lot of "black" in her (she looks italian) & my dad's family is black (he a lightskin tho).

I'm not sure if I get this Afro Latino thing.. this is what I understand, If you are a light skin Latina like me you supposed to say that you're Latina, but if you're a dark skin Latina you're supposed to say that you're Afro Latina?.. It confuses me a little because in my country we don't call each other that, if you're light or dark you're still a Latino. This also scares me because my father lives in DR, but he comes to visit me every year and he doesn't know much about these things, he's dark skin but if anybody would ask him where he's from he would say Dominican/Latino/Hispanic, and I wouldn't want him to be labeled as racist just because he didn't called himself Afro Latino. If anybody can please explain to me a bit more about this topic I would appreciate it. is my father supposed to say he's Afro Latino because he's dark?, my sister is also dark so she's Afro and I'm not? I need an American to explain this to me a little be better. Thanks!

I dont understand what's so hard about understanding what afro Latino means. It just means that it's someone who is black that's from a Hispanic country. It's not two different cultures, like someone mentioned in the video, either. It's one in the same. I dont understand how it's different from someone who is Jamaican or Haitian. The only reason why there is this confusion is bc a lot of people are not used to seeing black people from Hispanic countries. Black is not synonymous with African American. There's black people everywhere. The reason that there needs to be a word like afro-latino for black Hispanics is to give them something to identify with bc there is a lot of under representation not only here in America but in their own countries as well. Afro-latino does not mean half african american and half hispanic, unless the parent from the hispanic side is black. Afro-latino just means a black person that is Hispanic, much like Celia Cruz or Joseline Hernandez. Just google it and you will understand so much more.

@@ethansalcedo6864 Having 7 percent of black blood does not make you black...and what you are saying takes away from the plight of actual black hispanics. By trying to say "well we're all black," it overshadows someone who actually is. I think you need to read a book and Google.

@@ethansalcedo6864 See, now you're ringing bells of color blindness, which perpetuates the cycle of racism in the end. Someone is different if they are darker or lighter than someone else. Their skin tone is different. If youre talking about as a human being, skin color should not define anyone.

Afrolatinidad is an extension of latinidad in many ways, not a different culture. African culture has tremendous influence in many Hispanic countries. My experience as a Caribbean native, Puerto Rican culture is heavily influenced by our African roots, and you can see it in our music genres and food.

The thing that confuses me the most is why do we need to categorize being latino and being afro latino? The "latin" culture is a merge of 3 distinct cultures: Indigenous (native american), European (mostly Spanish of course) and African. Just embrace the culture, its diversity and most importantly: THE ROOTS!

Wait, is being Latina a race? Because I see people say they're Latina in response to being asked their race or something like that. Then people say white people can be Latina too? Like what race are Mexicans? Dark skinned ones? Is it an ethnicity? If so what's the difference between ethnicity and race? I don't mean to sound racist, I'm genuinely confused. Google ain't helping as all I get are scriptures.
