Most people have heard of the Transatlantic slave trade, whereby an estimated 12 - 13 million Africans were enslaved and trafficked to Europe and the Americas. However, did you know that the Transatlantic slave trade was kick started by the Portuguese? In this video we take a look at Afro-Portuguese history and culture from the 8th century to the modern day, featuring black knights, renaissance art, liberation movements and football!

My mom's Angolan and my dad's Portuguese. I was born in Angola in 1975 when independence came. We took refuge in Portugal in that same year since a civil war was starting in Angola. I grew up here in Portugal and my parents always told me how beautiful Africa is and how I should one day visit my birth land.

I'm mixed race half Portuguese/Angolan, born and raised in a small town in the center Portugal, growing up in the the 80's/90's my family experience wasn't perfect but we adapted, being the town aliens, not easy, there wasn't many families like mine.. still I believe I had a great childhood and I'm proud to be Portuguese.. its an illusion to think there's no racism in Europe. Honestly! I felt more discriminated by Angolan "institutions" (police, airport staff, etc...) when I visited Angola for 3 weeks with my "lighter skin" then all those years in Portugal and Portugal is much more open minded now!!. Anyway, that's my experience.. (things are not so "black and white")..

What she is wrong about is that the first slaves were brought directly from Spain and Portugal fifteen to twenty years before they started getting them from Africa. The Spanish Inquisition and the transatlantic slave trade are one in the same. Spain and Portugal were turning their Jews into slaves and shipping them to Portuguese territories in Africa and Brazil. If you read older books they will tell you this

I am half Capeverdian, from being so let me explain to you what I know. Cape Verde is the name of the country and not the people and Capeverdean is the nationality. So the word “Capeveardean” is not the name of an ethnicity but the nationality of people born in Cape Verde. In terms of race, there are Capeverdeans that are mixed (the majority, I believe), black and actually some are white (very rare). There is not a specific ethnicity.

I love how people try to explain the history of Portugal in the age of discovery. The main reason why the Portuguese began to explore the sea was to find a sea route to India because of the Spice trade which was monopolized by the Muslims. Gold and other resources including slaves were traded along the journey when the Portuguese had to get on land for food and water.

Obviously today the majority of people in Portugal would be people from Portuguese speaking countries it however does not mean people from elsewhere especially as at the 1400, 1500 and all that didn't come from elsewhere other than Angola, in case you didn't know the Portuguese reached West Africa before they reached Angola, but when Europe shared Africa for themselves Portugal got Angola and Britian wanted Nigeria and Ghana while France got almost every other west African country so Portugal's dealings in places like Nigeria ended

African slaves were also brought to the Islands of Madeira, Azores and the Canary islands to work on plantations and help settle the Islands. There are many records in the Islands such as Marriage records, Birth records ect the islands were used for sugarcane plantations in the 15th century. As early as 1440 you had Africans in Madeira. Portuguese from the Azores, Madeira are also descended from the Afro-Diaspora
@anomalousviewer3164
@anomalousviewer3164 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct slaves had been taken to Madeira , however what you didnt mention is that eventually the portuguese ( in madeira ) got feed up and decided they no longer needed slaves for the hard labour on the island and did all the work themselves and had the slave population transported of the island to other areas.
@johnp760
@johnp760 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the slaves were mixed into the population during the 15th and 16th centuries. The slaves that were freed mainly stayed on the Islands. But yes the focus of the slave trade shifted to brazil after a certain point. However Azoreans and Madeirans can trace a minor part of Ancestry to African slaves brought in the initial settlement period of the islands. The production of the sugar trade shifted to brazil where it was more profitable. African slaves however were still present in thr Azores and Madeira up until the end of slavery on the Islands in the 18th century. They had jobs on the Islands, clergy also owned slaves.
@johnp760
@johnp760 3 жыл бұрын
So the "Portuguese" on the Islands that were "fed" up and did all the hard work themselves like you claim were the descendants of African slaves to begin with
@anomalousviewer3164
@anomalousviewer3164 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnp760 No, very little, in a small amount that may last till today from the slaves may be found in some family lineages most will be the small amount of recent mixing. Portuguese man, African woman breeding that would be the majority of type of mixing that would have occurred, very small thou. The highest point of the slave population was when they accounted for about 10% (similar as in Portugal) of Madeira's population. Madeira is definitely not Saint tome if you understand what I'm saying. Europeans are actually quite mixed between themselves, especially the euro Mediterranean peoples. Iberian, italic, celtic, germanic, Greek genes moreless along those lines. So its a silly notion that present day Maderiense all decent from african slaves. Madeira is Portuguese not african not matter how unfortunate one is indoctrinated in the present day narrative.
@johnp760
@johnp760 3 жыл бұрын
According to genetic studies the average for Autosmal sub-Saharan ancestry in the Azores is around 2-3% on Average i believe a little higher in Madeira around 5%. The Azores and Madeira are Endogamous populations meaning very inbred. We all branch off the same groups of the original settlers in the Islands. I am of Azorean and Madeiran ancestry, we all get some small SSA on some tests. I see Azoreans and Madeirans find records of enslaved ancestors everyday. I dont know why you have such a denial about such. It is well documented in records and genetic studies that there was a small African input into Madeira and the Azores from West African and North African slaves. If it helps you sleep better pretending that it isnt true then good for you. However your statements are not in line with genetic studies or history. I did not say the Azores and Madeira was "Sao Tome" however the input from Africans is a fact one that you feel a need to downplay clearly. My point is that Azoreans and Madeirans can also trace minor descent from the trans atlantic slave trade and the role the Islands played.

I am Portuguese, son of white Portuguese with black African mother, I lived in Portuguese colonial Angola, and slavery in Portugal had no expression, there were very few Africans, that 10% is not real, it was an estimate of a place, where there were blacks but they were not slaves like in Brazil or america and they ended up mixing with whites, in Portugal the Africans came by plane from 1975 with the independence of the afghan countries outside the former colonizer, to remember that portuguese colonialism was only possible thanks to the coloboration of many native peoples, the Portuguese got mixed up and the native peoples always defended portugal

@Rene, colonization in the XV, XV, XVII centuries was horrible but it's naive to say that "Angolans adopt the culture of their colonizers", as if that hasn't been happening to all cultures over time...including to the 'colonizers' themselves. If you look at history most European countries were at some point conquered, slaughtered and made slaves by other 'people'. Slavery exists for millennia and has affected people in all continents. African slavery in the XV to XVIII centuries was slavery trade 'on steroids' but not a new concept.

So the Portuguese who already had skilled and talented moors who already spoke Spanish and Portuguese, decided to go all the way to Angola for labor? Or maybe those original moorish Portuguese fled Europe into Africa where they can blend in. And there are more detailed accounts of the Portuguese enslaving American Indians, then shipping them into Africa to build forts.

Also it sounds like you're suggesting that I believe that Portugal is the native language of the places I mentioned. I am well aware that the places in Africa, Asia and South America where the Portuguese colonized had languages, cultures, religions, etc. Way before the Portuguese invaded. And it is, in your words "colonial bs" lmao. I agree... not sure what your issue is with what I said.

This is the issue! It's colonial bullshit to say "or one of the countries that Portugal invaded and colonized such as Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, etc." Keep Angola out of your mouth when it comes to calling africans Afro-Lusophones. Afro-Lusophones is bullshit and it is a colonial category to us. Maybe for capeverdians, known to reject their african identity with passion, but not for us.

The labels "afri-" are misleading as it suggests that we were only descendants. The Portuguese and the Europeans learned sea-faring and navigating from the Indigenous of "Alkebulan". They learned language & religion from people of "Alkebulan" ages before white Portuguese existed. The first Popes were "Aethiopian" as Greeks would call them. The first 8 Presidents in Al-meri-ca were also "moorish". Our history preceding the 1400's is still widely suppressed.

I've been eyeing Portugal for the last year or so. Jamaican born, living in the US withy girlfriend and 2 young daughters. I'm tired of the BS in America and looking to relocate but this video left me with a sigh. I'm not interested in moving my family just for them to be subjected to more racism. It's probably not half as bad ad the US which is actually better but still. I have room to be concerned

If I may comment Portugal does have minimal racist small pocket incidence of experiencing that sick mentality. But trust if you do your research Portugal is a country that I would relocate my family to because it's an amazing unique place to call to be proud of. Most places through out Portugal is stunningly beautiful along w/the people some of the friendliest folk EVER!! Racism is barely felt it's not perfect but folks in that country from White 2 brown skin get along respectfully! I would raise my family in that BEAUTIFUL, GORGEOUS beach shore line country. Take a trip and trust you will run back home 2 pack up the remaing of your life stuff!! Inexpensive 2 live there, also their fiddles are off the hooks & it's inexpensive 2 eat out, friendly people who love 2 celebrate any reason, great music, great food, great weather, low, low crime on and on!!!

Unfortunately institutional systematic racism is built into every government structure. Even Ghana, Rwanda and Namibia. The tribalism replaces racism in many places but the result is the same. Even in Jamaica, the tribalism and racism are replaced with colorism. Why not return to Jamaica? If not there I would settle for the place that I would encounter the least racist personal confrontations. That varies depending on where you're from and what you look like. I find that having an American passport and being light skinned gives me a privelege in many European countries that Africans do not get. I also love Jamaica and Ghana though and I am treated well in both places! US is home for me and I have traveled and lived far and wide but ultimately I always come back home.

I am now understanding why the Portuguese in South America are so prejudice. They are probably told a lot about the Portuguese slave trade. We as black Caribbean people have no idea what is the route of our ancestors. I am part Portuguese, Scottish, maybe British and African. I only know about two generations before me. It would be very difficult to trace my roots. The French also moved the slaves around in the Caribbean. I hope people of today understand why there is the BLM movement. Enough is enough. God made us all. We are all going the same place when we die.
