I don't think Venezuelan Afro history has been muted, in our country, at least. I my opinion it is the black communities in the US, and other countries that have overlooked it. In fact, it is not just Venezuelans that have been "muted" in the afro community, it's all latinos. Aparently one cannot be latino and black.

And this is why I got so upset when people call me “white passing” I’m from Venezuela and my DNA have black, white and indigenous… saying that I’m white is not accurate and is basic ignoring how I identify myself. In my beautiful country we have strong African influences even in our dance Tambor (Drums) and our food and culture, I wish people in America can understand this

As a kid and teen, it really shocked me to see a Hispanic, Italian or Greek-American with blue eyes or with blonde or red hair. It was only later that I gained knowledge after reading about their countries and talking to people. Then again, I never knew Black people lived in the UK until I saw Charles and Di's wedding as a kid. I was unfamiliar with the black populations in Latin America as well as a teen. Live and learn!

I'm actually in one of the photos :) I have been traveling to Venezuela and researching Afro-Venezuelan culture for over a decade and this is a good capture of many important points. I think it would also be important to point out in an academic way that the ethnic hierarchy of Venezuela is completely different than the one in the US. We don't use ethnic labels to describe who we are. Yes, we can use/refer to our ethnic background, but it is not how we address/describe one another. Things like African-Venezuelan, Arab/Muslim-Venezuelan, White-Venezuelan, Asian-Venezuelan, etc. are basically nonexistent in our vocabulary. Of course, that is not to say that our ethnic differences are not present, but that we are all Venezuelans regardless what you look like, or what generation you are. I also think that the reason why you don't see as much of an ethnic divide, is because we don't use those labels. We have grown up in environments that have been, in a way, multicultural. Yes, we have a lot of second/third generations in Venezuelan, but from what I expirienced our ethinicity was never hold over our heads as something bad or something we should be ashamed of, in fact, it was something that made us more valuable. Venezuelan people are extremely generous, caring, giving, and accepting. I hope you were able to expirience that side of my country.

Actually, the majority of venezuelans have african ancestry and they will tell you so, proudly, not all of us "look" african but most of us have it in us, however when you ask venezuelans how we identify ourselves we say almost exclusively venezuelan, we rarely identify to a race, becase we are mostly mestizos, so identifying with only one race wouldn't be completely accurate...

I agree with you 100% and the actual reason why we identify as a race it’s because unlike the US (race is a culture) doesn’t matter how you look, your culture will be your country, accent and cultural life in this case we are Venezuelans and that’s our culture, doesn’t matter if we are black, white, blue, green or brown.

As a Venezuelan thank you for the video. However, data in and from Venezuela is not reliable, to say that one percent of the population "identifies" as "Afro-Venezuelan" would be incorrect. We don't use that terminology. If we are talking about taking in the cultural elements from African countries, like music, religion, traditions, and arts. then every Venezuelan would be considered an "Afro-Venezuelan". If we are talking about ethnic background, I would say about 70 percent (being generous here) has African ethnic descent. We are a country that has never really used that terminology to describe one another. We are all just Venezuelans.

It’s not that we don’t identify as “Afro-Venezuelans”. In our culture, we don’t divide ourselves by race. Those forms at the Dr. office asking your race? That doesn’t exist in Venezuela. El Negro Primero, he is a patriot honored across the country and with pictures in our History books. Our freedom and independence was achieved thanks to the fight of African-Venezuelans, Natives and White people. From the foundation of our republic, we are mixed (Spanish, Black, and Native). We have classism more than racism. I am not saying that racism doesn’t exist, it’s just not as prominent and aggressive as in North America.
