Will Smith is one of the most popular and beloved actors of all time, with a huge list of blockbuster movies under his belt. It seems like he really wanted that same future for his son Jaden, because he and his wife handed him a starring role in a big budget M Night Shyamalan movie. Did he live up to the challenge? Um...
After Earth raises lots of questions. Like why did anyone think it was a good idea to have Jaden lead a movie like this? Why have Will Smith in it if he’s going to be stone-faced and emotionless? How did everything on Earth evolve in one thousand years to kill humans, which didn’t even live there anymore? Why would aliens breed monsters specifically to kill humans, but only give them the ability to smell fear? Why did M Night Shyamalan direct this thing?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to After Earth! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Well, the premise of Pitch Meetings is to explore the hypothetical terrible decisions that go into making movies, so it's definitely easier to come up with bad decisions for a bad movie than bad decisions for a good movie, and that definitely leads to better jokes at the film maker's expense.

Well actually it was super easy, barely an inconvenience. But for real though: the Sydney funnel web, considered the most venomous spider in the world, has venom that is many times more potent ( = harmful/deadly) against primates than against any other taxonomic groups of mammals. And it evolved many million years before the first primates turned up on Australian coast. Sometimes coincidences happen.

Video games do this too, from time to time. Just sort of making up a bunch of random "science" that they pulled from their butts. Though it's almost more painful when they skim through a couple of actual scientific theories or articles or whatever, and then just name-drop a few details like that token gesture somehow makes their dung-filled nonsense pie of a setting more plausible... ...For some reason, Firaxis, Civ: Beyond Earth and the X-Com reboot spring to mind.

Because M. Night thinks he's a better writer than he actually is, and doesn't understand that when you to try to apply naturally occurring phenomenon like evolution, you actually have to have some sort of understanding of how they actually work. Like making water fatal to aliens, even though water is pretty common throughout the universe and they're invading a planet mostly covered in it, or that "fear" is just a result of the body fight or flight response and so will be secreting the same "pheromones" regardless of whether or not the person is actually scared or just charging into the fight...

To be fair he wasn't that bad. The main issue is they put in this kid with little to no real acting experience and try to throw him as the main star to a major motion picture as if that will put him on the map. But getting small rolls until your "big break" is also where you get the experience to become a talented actor. But everyone acted like because he was the son of Will Smith he just just be ... automatically as good as his father who's had decades of acting experience. The fact they litterally nerf Will Smith just to try to not overshadow him own son really killed the movie.

One thing that always confused me about the whole "Mutants are the next stage in human evolution" malarkey is that in the Marvel Universe mutants are constantly being exterminated and killed off in various future timelines. So doesn't that simply make mutants a FAILED offshoot of humanity since their mutant status confers significantly LESS reproductive fitness/success due to them frequently being killed off long before they have a chance to reproduce and pass on their DNA...? I mean, evolution via natural selection has nothing to do with a group of related individuals all developing amazing superpowers, it is simply the proliferation and continuance of inherited characteristics that increase the reproductive fitness/success of all individuals who share those characteristics. So, since the Marvel Universe is apparently full of intolerant bigots who all want to murder mutants, having mutant superpowers isn't an advantage, it's a liability, and being a NON-mutant confers greater reproductive fitness/success. Basically, what I'm saying is Magneto doesn't understand evolution. Haha

@@LoganBluth Yes and there would have to have been some exerted pressure within human society/species assemblages that would push humans towards having crazy powers. If they were truly "mutations" then the background mutation rate would be absurdly high. Generally this confers reduced fitness but is alleviated because selection prevents deleterious mutations from becoming too high in a population. The issue with human society is that selection pressure is greatly reduced (which is a problem in real life, deleterious mutations are not being purged and so we are facing a dilemma. Either begin some form of genetic engineering in human society, an ethically debated science -and for good reason, or we face something known as Mueller's ratchet where slightly deleterious mutations build up in a species (if they are very deleterious they are selected against) until the viability of that species is a huge concern and a subsequent collapse takes place.) and so a high mutation rate SHOULD cause mutants to be selected against very rapidly.

I don’t get why there are Mutants AND Inhumans among humans in the marvel Universe. Maybe that will be explored int the future but as it is it’s just explained with “oh, it’s just evolution” because that part of science was not as widely understood by readers at the time I guess
