Not be confused with MARINE Life vests designed to inflate when wet.
And removal of the N2 cartridge from a Marine vest will then require manual inflation, which can be a challenge if one or more passengers are injured during ditching.

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

In a very bad stormy night our phone rang. It was the cost guard asking about my dad, who was asleep in bed next to m y mother. They had gotten the ELT from my dad's plane. The plane was right where it should be, tied down in it's parking spot at the airport, but the wind had shaken the plane so hard it set off the ELT. Though several planes were damaged by the storm, my dad's was not.

Interesting about the 121.5 MHz ELT. In Europe, 406 MHz ELTs have been mandatory even for light GA airplanes for a long time. Ours doesn't have GPS, but it transmits a unique 24bit code that has been registered to our aircraft. Aircraft used for commercial operations and even flight training need to have an installed ELT, for private use only it can be a portable device.
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 8 жыл бұрын
+pinkdispatcher Yes, I too think 406 should be mandatory at this point... but I think the main reason it is not, is because of the power of AOPA fighting regulation; In this case it hasn't been a positive result.

I did still get a day's flying with a family member, though, and got to speak to a spitfire pilot as they had one down at the aerodrome that day. Also helped put the wings on a 1949 Nord after it was bought as non-functional about 10 years ago, so overall an amazing day, still!

I was excited to see the signal mirror aimer footage at 10:21 showing the "bright spot" aiming aid produced by the retroreflective mesh grid in the commercial purpose built signal mirror. Since the "bright spot" is only visible when the user is looking through the sight in the direction of the reflected column of light, it is hard to explain without a photo, or (better yet, and here) video. The only glass signal mirrors currently made with the retroreflective grid are the MIL-M-18371E model made by S.I. Howard Glass in the USA (if you Google for MIL-M-18371E, you can find distributors) in 2"x3" and 3"x5" sizes, and the Coghlan's Survival Signal Mirror Model 9902 in the 2"x3" size [Note: the current Coghlan's mirror seems not to be watertight - I wouldn't recommend it for maritime use.]. There are other glass signal mirrors on the market that that have grids that are not retroreflective, and don't produce the "bright spot" (more on that here: www.equipped.com/phony_signal_mirrors.htm ). For a handy step-by-step illustrated guide on using the retroreflective mesh aimer, go here: flic.kr/p/nsrjRG . If you can't get a retroreflective mesh aimer mirror, there are perforated retroreflective aimer signal mirrors that work by the same "glowing sighting ball" principle - you can buy plastic signal mirrors with that aimer type (e.g. Rescue Flash™ or StarFlash™) or make your own (non-watertight) glass signal mirrors - I have a page on that here: www.bsaontarget.org/mirrors

Very interesting as always. If I may: you can file a FPL and instead of using PASS names.. use the COORDINATES. Thus you can actually use them IN the fpl route. In any case you can then add a RMK with the correlation between coordinates and pass names. LOTS of work BUT ... that's the whole point, isn't it?

Hey Steve, I really enjoyed this week's installment, thank you! Question - do you have anything coming up about how/where to pick an area for a forced approach in mountainous or inhospitable terrain? Very tempted to take that course you were on too! Cheers, QK
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 8 жыл бұрын
+Quebec Kilo Thanks! We have like 6 more episodes coming from this material! I hadn't specifically planned to discuss selecting forced approach locations... But I can ask Jason about it and maybe fit that into an upcoming video. My initial thoughts are that forced approach landing spot selection is a more general sort of topic; but I will see if Jason has any specific thoughts on that related to mountain flying.

I thought the difference in attitude about flight plans was interesting - our Canadian regulations are a lot stricter on the subject, and we're much more accustomed to en route position reports, updates, and so on. Dunno about southern Ontario, but here in B.C. Pacific Radio are positively chatty. :-)
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 8 жыл бұрын
+Laura Halliday Interesting. I don't do a ton of cross country flying honestly... but when I do, I like to file a flight plan. And I often get flight following (which I know does not replace a flight plan) But I don't tend to make any position reports to F.S.S. unless I am behind or changing the route. And I can vouch for a similar issue around some pilots avoiding filing at all, for fear of forgetting to close it.
