After Mailing Letters for 42 Years, Pen Pals Finally Meet in Person

George Ghossn, 56, of Long Island, headed to the San Diego home of Lori Gertz, 54, for a visit four decades in the making. When she was 12 and he was 14, they became pen pals through a chain letter. "I think you write to six people and you're supposed to get hundreds back and I got one," she said. They wrote each other about once a month for the next 42 years. #InsideEdition

International Pen Friends, (IPF) sent me around 14 pen pals in 1989 when I was 15 years old and only one person on the list was male, from Estonia, when it was still part of the former U.S.S.R. He was my most faithful letter writer and just graduated and beginning law school at the time, as he was 19, and colleague was one of the only ways he could avoid serving in the Russian Red Army at the time. I met him, his then wife and their new baby boy in 1998 in DC when I was in Virginia serving in the U.S. Navy and married at the time. I can’t believe it took 42 years for these pals to meet!
