After Midnight - Eric Clapton (1988 Version) (Cover)

It's almost after midnight here in Kraków, Poland as I'm uploading this cover. I'm pretty sure this version was born out of a quick jam in the studio as it all sounds like a single-take, no-overdubs, turn-on-the-tape-and-see-what-comes-out recording. I don't know anyone who plays more like Clapton than Colin. He has Clapton's phrasing in him. Congratulations, perfect as always. You have to make your own songs, you are a great guitarist!.

I appreciate seeing August in the background.. have been listening to it since it came out in '86 and it's my favorite Clapton album from that era.. I remember seeing the Michelob commercial on TV back then and the shock of hearing this '88 version' for the first time.. you've done it justice as you have with his others.. well done!

Colin, absolutely gorgeous and stunning cover of this hidden gem from 1988. I remember it was used on a Michelob beer commercial and then released on the crossroads box set. You nailed it and love your version. Those lace sensor pickups sound heavenly. I think Eric needs to record with you! Peace and love brother and thank you for keeping these wonderful songs alive!!

Does Clapton bar his chords the little Pinky or pinky and ring finger when he’s got his middle finger sticking out? I’ve always felt more comfortable barring with my ring finger.

Clapton doesn't use his ring finger while playing that chord shape. I, too, was more comfortable with the ring finger approach, but I wanted to copy Eric's pinky finger style. So I began barring with my pinky while using the ring finger for support. Then I practiced without the support for a couple of months and voila! I was there!

This one was tricky to replicate as it clearly wasn't his big 80s Marshall stack tone. I've ended up taking JCM800 head with some small, random speaker in Amplitube 4 and added chorus. I think it sounds rather good!

Thanks! Amplitube - you combine JCM800 head with some very small, almost champ-like speaker + chorus. That should give you that small amp tone. I think that's what happened when they went to record this ad-hoc for a commercial. I guess there was some small marshall in the studio and they went with that.

Nope. It's a MIM Classic Series 50s Stratocaster with Lace Sensor pickups added.

@@ColinStachowski The mid boost circuit is useful for solos when extra heat in your lead excursions is required. It makes single coils sound more like a humbucker while retaining their transparency and clarity. Eric uses the boost knob regularly to push the front end of his amps without the need for an overdrive pedal. «Before You Accuse Me» features Robert Cray as a guest. Using the sunburst Classic 50's with the Texas Specials will give you the quacky signature tones from this strong persuader in your fingertips.
