She seems genuinely connected to African culture and her work reflects it. I just wish she realised that she can love that culture, do good work for the community, raise black children while still being a white woman. I hope one day she realises that it’s OK to be white because that part of her won’t change no matter what.

People are identifying as women when they're literally, basically, naturally and biologically male and they're not being punished but this woman is being bashed for racially identifying as black when she's white. Okay so it's bad to change a race but it's alright to change a gender?...

She compelled to change her race because the culture tries to vilifies being of white heritage. 100%! I really don't see the problem if she wants to identify as black. I just wished she would have been honest about it from the jump. However, we know this is not normal and we've seen some of our people pass for white for centuries and have never heard an uproar about it. I'm from New Orleans and you couldn't live in certain (Black) areas in the 40's, 50's, and early 60's, if you didn't passing for white. Shit was horrible to hear how our own people was faking it and we turned our heads back then. Some are just having issues dealing with this cause it is not normal. The question is why we can't accept her for wanting to be black. Black is beautiful, please join us if that is what you want to do love.

Rachel grew up with extremely religious parents who adopted black kids and refused to teach them their true history. She started teaching them (in secret) about themselves as black people and exposed them to black history art & culture. She fell in love with blackness through teaching her adopted siblings. They were abused by the parents and molested by her real brother. She’s so extreme in her actions because of how extreme her parents were with their religion. She wanted to distance herself from her real family and found a home in black culture. There’s a difference between appropriation and APPRECIATION. Im only posting to provide UNDERSTANDING. Yes she lied but I truly understand why so I don't harbor any bad feelings towards this woman. Its not worth the energy. I simply want to provide understanding & would do the same for anyone who wanted to tell their story. Not all “Asians” are EAST Asian. I am part Kazakh (Central Asia) and look quite “Asian”. To me, using the term “Asian” is inaccurate because Asian people can have many looks. There are Jews, Arabs, Indians, Persians , Kurds , etc. that don’t fit the Asian phenotype. The people of Central Asia can look as “Asian” as they do in East Asia. The term”Oriental” is outdated. Using the term “Mongoloid” is more accurate.

Especially when society, more particularly our media “exposes” them for a controversy one way or the other. There is some kind of primal urge within many of us to pile on people, to take out our insecurities we find within ourselves on others. It’s such a god damn bummer. I think the saying “bad news travels fast” in a way validates the idea that we have a lot to learn about acceptance. Small minds tend to discuss other people, where as great minds tend discuss ideas. So let me get this straight you believe that somebody who claimed to be black that is biologically white by nature who continually wrote disparaging letters about the black community to herself deserves to be employed! Let's not refrain from the fact that she continually sent letters depicting photos of African-Americans being lynched to herself for national attention. I'm Mexican if somebody had did this to our culture I don't care what kind of message they represent the fact that they willingly looked up of our people being killed and harassed and spread a false message that they were being targeted represents to me that they're horrible people. Never in my life have I ever met a minority who would go to the extent of glorifying the horrific and tragic past that our ancestors had to endure for national acclaim. She's reprehensible.

@@KevenTalks She went about things wrong but given her background of living in Africa and having Nigerian born siblings...I can see the confusion. The way I see it, she dedicated her life to "black culture", became a leader in her community and contributed to that community. The crime she did was she got caught "passing" something "black" folks have done for generations for a perceived better life. The difference was that those "black" that were "passing" were trying to escape "blackness" while she is running head first toward a perceived "blackness". I see how it is problematic but at least it sparks a dialogue on race and co-existing in a non-violent and even academic way.
