As one journey comes to a close, a new one begins... and I cannot wait to see where it and more importantly, She goes.
(Just as a small disclaimer by the way, when I was going through and grabbing screenshots/making the thumbnail, I realized... apparently Frieren actually DOES have access to subtitles for the dubbed episodes. I'm sorry for not checking before, I just assumed that we were left hanging again, but apparently not. In future episodes I will include them so you can follow along that much better with your copies.)

Alright, as promised, here is a "Certified German(TM)" translation for the names. Ill let you get your own impression of why each character is named such, guaranteed spoiler free: Frieren: Freezing, as in the feeling of being cold Himmel: Heaven or Sky, German uses the same word for both Eisen: Iron Heiter: a feeling of happiness, and also a weather condition meaning an almost clear sky Fern: Far, as in Far Away Ewig the Sage: Eternal/Unending (the Sage, duh) One more is mentioned, but will be for later~ Will keep this up whenever an episode reveals new names at a point they are no longer spoilers for a characters behavior or similar

I think the dub for Frieren is ok- good, definitely nothing wrong with watching it. But the Japanese actors performance is so stellar in this show i cant do anything then regard the dub as inferior. The deciding factor was the character of Frieren which to say it bluntly, i regard as a complete miscast for the character in English. The problem for me is that Frieren is a very complex character, she is on one hand this ancient elf that lived for so long and has such experience with many things. On the other hand, in elf years she is barely out of her teenage years and can be an absolute immature brat sometimes. The Japanese voice reflects that perfectly and goes effortlessly between like 3-4 different Frieren voice inflictions to potrray that. The English voice actress basically has just one voice, some form of " wise elder mommy elf" intonation that works in some scenes but feels terrible misplaced in many other ones. After watching the first few episodes in Japanese and in English i just could not continue with the English dub because of that. But hey, i know people who love her English voice and think it fits perfectly. I think it depends a lot if you know the original beforehand .

I agree with this. The dub isn't bad (it's actually pretty good IMO), but I really don't think Frieren's English VA fits her character. The VA does do a good job, I'm not saying she doesn't, but it just doesn't fit her character too well, IMO. And the entire Japanese cast nails their parts, I just can't justify listening to the EN dub over JP with this show.
