The World denied knowledge of violence in Rwanda that took many innocent lives, the World will never deny knowledge of what has been goin on in Uganda for the last 33 years! Channel 4 news, you trivialise Bobby Wine in this article by calling him a 'Ghetto popstar' (2:48) and a 'popstar would-be president'. This is fake news. Yes, he was a popstar who, at first as very youthful, sang about typical interests of most young men (girls and parties). Way way back, he became a conscious artist. He sang about social and political issues. From that, people urged him to use his voice beyond song and entertainment. And, so, he set about further educating himself and the move to - also - politics. Years ago, he was elected as a Member of Parliament. Check an interview from Al Jazeera from a year ago if you don't believe me. Where is your fair and honest reporting, Channel 4? You have been conspicuously almost utterly silent about Uganda's election campaign, the brutally oppressive tactics used against the National Unity Platform (Bobi Wine is part of the NUP) And here, when you do report, you seek to trivialise a man who is risking up to his life for Uganda and Ugandans. Also, you imply that he is violent. You refer to a song with Buju Banton and the line 'by the ballot or the bullet' and you say that he 'croons the language of bombs and guns'. This is fake news. The actual last song was the one for the campaign. He sang unequivocably for non-violence. And, over and over and over again, in this campaign - despite extreme provocation - he and his team have not retaliated. Even when military trucks drove over Frank but two days ago, killing him. Even when military and police shot various of his team, hospitalising many. One reporter - a reporter, just like you are supposed to be - has had his brains oozing out of his skull and lies in hospital. Maybe, he will regain consciousness, language and mobility. Maybe not. Where is the violence, Channel 4? Where are the bullets? Where is the language of bombs and guns? It does not lie with Bobi Wine (his stage name). It does not lie with Robert Ssetamu Kyagulanyi (his name as presidential candidate and member of parliament). You fail to understand code-switching. Bobi Wine is extremely conscious of his multiple audiences. When he speaks to the 'ghetto' [read poor], urging and explaining the importance of a non-violent peaceful campaign, yes, he will sing in 'ghetto' dress. He is speaking to a youthful nation - all thinkers - but many of whom are illiterate or practically illiterate. But, Channel 4, you should know well enough the incredible power, strength and honesty of African music at its best. Ugandans dance and sing. He is reaching them in a natural cultural form. When he urges a non-violent peaceful campaign, he will also wear formal dress such as a suit (plus, on the campaign trail, he must wear the metal helmet and bullet-proof vest which help to keep him alive). He is speaking to the international audience. He is speaking to the national audience too. This is the same person, code-switching to the language of members of parliament. Because he can dance and sing does not make him any more 'ghetto' than Pavarotti or Elvis Presley or the Beatles.Wise up, Channel 4. Open your minds to other cultural expressions of political and social change. It doesn't have to be a TEDtalk.
