We had a lot of work to do in Majuro, after the rudder loss in the open ocean. A lot of things had to be repaired and exchanged and we were happy that we managed to reach the Marshall Islands. In the atoll we also celebrated Christmas and New Years and then we got the cyclone waring..

So often in emergency situations, there are so many shoulda woulda coulda's in hindsight, but the main thing is you persevered through to safety. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and thoughts as we all learn from them. Hope you are having a much better Christmas this year where ever it is you are now! Yeah me too. The other thing I wondered about is whether the boom (even without a added blade) might make an emergency rudder. Obviously the pivot point is the hardest to fashion for either option. But it looks like you already have the best solution well made and ready for the next time... so it won’t be needed, which of course is the best result you can get. Thanks for sharing. Your responses and actions were very admirable. Fair winds and following seas for your continuing voyage.

Next time you guys have good internet look-up the youtube video about the Garcia 45 Exploration. They have a bracket on the back which is designed to accept an outboard motor, a hydro generator and probably could accept an attachment point for an emergency tiller.

We helps friends ( back in 1996-7) with a Jenneau 43 (94?) their rudder( fiberglass part) was repaired in Caribbean under warranty but not good enough so did again in USA. The boatyard complained a lot and said they would never do again as the boat would not tow without the rudder. I had told them to tow it backwards or side tow but they did not listen to me. They only had to move it a few hundred meters back to dock without rudder. What you had to go thru was 100 times worse! The rudder of these designs is such an important part of the underwater shape , you never realize until you don't have one.! It is really nice that the rudder tube is above the water so water does not come in when you remove the rudder. Will you show us how you added a zinc anode to the rudder to protect the metal? Cheers Warren
@HilmaSailing
@HilmaSailing 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's tricky but possible. ☺️ We have not recorded that but maybe that's something we can try to show in the future. The zinc anode is on the outside of the hull and the cable that is connected to that is running inside the hull. It's a bit tricky to film but we'll see if it is possible. 😊 Cheers and Merry Christmas!

By my measure if you get the boat back to a safe anchorage by any means it was a success. Their is no wrong way to save your ass. So many of the Monday armchair quarterbacks forget this. Your back at a safe place and alive so your method of getting there is good. If you can tell me how I can prevent my boat from having this it becomes two wins!!!! God bless!

So a broken wire from a compass light could have cost you the boat. Crazy. I remember that video about a family who lost their rudder in the atlantic. They had to abandon their boat, which was all they possessed. I am not sure but it looked like their marriage broke too.

Don’t know your steering set up but is there a way to insert a plastic or rubber bushing on the rudder stock where the chain connects to stop any future electrical current?
@HilmaSailing
@HilmaSailing 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe that is possible but we chose to disconnect all the cables from the steering house and connect a zink anode to the rudder shaft instead.☺️

A lot of people sail pretty far in complex and sensetive vessels that are not primarily designed to take a beating and I think they all take a calculated risk of ending up in exactly this situation. The opposite is a safe formula for an ocean crossing. A steel hull and at least a rudder on a skeg where you can hit a log or a stray container in the night without too much worries. Everyting else is russian roulette for the benefits of one or two knots. Or a separate system: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irBye9VkxNzUgJc.html

Eric Aandaraa did a video recently where he showed how he has both emergency tiller attachments for the normal rudder as well as tiller attachments for the hydrovane auxiliary rudder. This seems like a robust system to have two rudders both with emergency tiller attachment points.
