It's crazy that people still think prison does anything other than traumatize people who are, for the most part, already traumatized going in. It's 2021, we are still letting people sexually assaulted and stabbed in cage over drugs. And then even more idiotic, are surprised when they come out and want drugs even more.

I think the voice change is probably a subconscious way of trying to make the other person comfortable. I come from the ghetto and when I go home, I talk that way again because when people don’t, they are accused of changing or showing off or trying to be uppity or whatever. I imagine prison voice is similar.. like a way of saying “it’s the same old me that you remember”

When I came home last year.... even though I had support from my mom and was able to move in with her... it was lonely. For the first 3 or 4 days, I wanted to go back to jail in a way. I had a routine and a support system from all my boys on the block. We ate together, joked around, worked together, exercised etc..., I found myself driving around for hours in a depression. All this and I had a home, money and kids to come home too. I couldn't imagine being released with absolutely nothing awaiting. I do feel empathy for the guys who did their time and aren't getting the resources to succeed. About a week into me being out, I remember telling a family member about how lost I was. He looked at me and said "don't give me that shit, that's just life, suck it up and deal with it". That pulled me out of my own head and been happy ever since.

@@lela2216 About a year and a half. He kinda had to Wean himself off having the tv loud at night. Then all of a sudden one night he just came in and started sleeping with me. And the first week of having him back in bed was hard. For the both of us. For me having someone else in my bed for him having someone else in bed. If I moved at all he would wake up if I made any sound he would wake up. Then finally I was like hey I need to pee and roll over and do whatever. And we have kids. So you either stop getting mad at me for waking you or go back to the couch. Still to this day all these years later. He is still a really light sleeper. We had a family friend who was a sailor in the British Merchant Marine from the 1920’s up until WW 2. There was always a grimy/worn spot on the bathroom wall above the toilets in his house. This was from years of steadying himself in the ships heads, he would place a hand on the wall as if the ship was rolling. The poor guy also developed a life long stammer & stutter after the trauma of being torpedoed by a U-Boat in the North Atlantic.

One of the things I've formed after coming home, is ptsd and anxiety/paranoia. Hearing car doors outside, I have to look outside. Hoping it's not a cop. Feels like people stare at me. Watching me. Like I'm in a trap. The aggression is real too. Everytime someone disrespects me, I feel like snapping. Whether it's verbally or physically. Shit sucks man.

Joe! I had an idea for a movie about a guy who is stuck in solitary confinement for a day or two without hearing from anyone. He manages to break out because he was lucky enough to be put into the one with the faulty door. But when gets out of it, he finds that he's in a completely empty prison. No prisoners, no guards, nothing. He finds a TV and see's no broadcasts on except for one channel that's looping an emergency message telling everyone to evacuate large populated areas or to lock their doors and stuff. He later finds out that he's in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. And now he's gotta use all his prison survival skills to survive in this world. My question for you, Joe, is what kind of prison based skills have you learned that would help you during an end of the world scenario? You'd have to consider things like food, shelter, engineering yourself some tools and making use of various supplies, dealing with other survivors who may not like the fact that you were in prison etc. I think it'd be an interesting discussion. I'm especially interested in the skillsets that some prisoners develop when it comes to repurposing electronics or taking them apart to craft something new. Things that people who have never been locked up wouldn't know how to do.

My uncle (RIP Uncle Doug) spent a lot of his life in prison going to ,getting out and going back several times. Everytime he’d get released he talk that way for a while. Him being from Alabama and growing up in the country he still would lose his country accent and develop a more “hood” type accent. He was in Holman Prison when it was the deadliest in the country. My friend from high school is serving a life sentence for murder there now.

Your damn right about reacting to people disrespecting you Joe..next to that though the biggest thing I have struggled with since I got out is setting routine. You set yourself a routine when your inside to help make time pass quicker and set a normality to your situation. Out on the streets though even, I find myself everyday HAVING to do things in certain order or things just feel off

Sometimes I know I can snap and break almost half of everybody in the rooms neck when they try and belittle you. Not knowing you've been holding in a rage counting white squares in a cell for years, sharpening your anger.

This would be a interesting topic since everyone is different. A cousin did time & I honestly forgot his answer. But he's 100% a different & better person than before he got locked up. He was selling & doing drugs in his high school days & carried over beyond those days. He's been locked up more than once, it wasn't until he met a woman that he finally changed his life around. They got married, had 2 kids & I'm baffled that they divorced. We're not close but I do know she was his everything & when he has his 1st son you could tell he was happy.

I did 24 yrs. in the CDC. I came home in 2015 with a lot of "prison habits". In June will be 6 yrs that I've been home and I've gotten rid of them all except one...I still eat fast. It took me 5 yrs to break my shower shoes habit 😂

I developed some food quirks while locked up. People were always trading off trays and reaching over everybody's shit and talking over it and I couldn't stand it. I came home 2 weeks before thanksgiving and when I had my first real thanksgiving dinner in 7 years I was still in prison mindset and a buddy of mine got a fork stuck in his hand for messing with my deviled egg. That was 17 years ago and I still get caught up in prison mentality especially with aggression and always watching what's going on around me waiting for shit to pop off
