You're right, technically most of the things we took were done legally for the time, yes, however that was often achieved by the British Museum or the rich and powerful making deals with corrupt rulers or even foreign powers who had conquered the country (such as the Ottoman Empire in Greece), so whilst we technically took everything 'legally', morally and realistically we did steal most of it. An example being the Parthenon Friezes. At no point did the Greeks get a say about the shipping of the Friezes to Britain. They were sold by the Ottomans who had no vested interest in Greek culture. This was of course done legally and in did have the effect of saving the Friezes from destruction, but the fact remains that the Greeks were never consulted and they want them back.

As a student studying archaeology at university i can confirm "finders keepers, shut up" is a valid defence for when you find a shiny in foreign soil

James is referring to the time when western explorers, scientists and archaeologists just took what they found from countries they went to, not to modern times when there is arrangements in place.

The artifacts housed in the British museum were often seen as an indemnity to cover the cost of campaigns which it was argued (sometimes truthfully) were forced upon the British. A lot of artifacts were sold off without understanding their value to other European countries, Germany in particular.

I really hope more people in the US discover his work. Not sure if his 4 part special is on Netflix US. It's 4 hours shot back to back, an absolute flex as a stand up comedian

You’re right about the digs, he’s referring more to the old school legit conquer and robbery, back when the British empire literally encompassed a good portion of the world at that time. Then once it dissolved so to speak and the modern world as we see today, they just kept everything lol

You really need to watch all 4 parts of his special. And, in order so that you'll be able to follow the overall theme. It's brilliantly done. He's one of the modern day greats.
