One of our favourite, reliable, easy-going summer perennials is evergreen agapanthus. We grow the cultivars African Skies, Lavender Haze, and Regal Beauty, which begin flowering in succession, providing at least three continuous and glorious months of sumptuous blue heads bursting with pretty summer flowers. These are undemanding plants, provided they are given some protection over the winter season, and we only feed once monthly. There is a relatively newly noted pest called the agapanthus gall midge. It is worth being vigilant for signs of the midge larvae (especially across the southern UK counties), and also choosing cultivars that are less susceptible.

Really liked the salvia amistad near the agapanthus. Both plants look well together and I will move my salvia amistad in a pot to blend in with my agapanthus. Also really liked you using your table wrapped with bubble wrap to overwinter your agapanthus.

Thanks for sharing ... also an agapanthus enthusiast ...have several large pots (although not quite as big as the 32 litre pots you mentioned!) of evergreen Queen's mum. Also have Regal beauty, although it will take a quite become I get a decent large clump. Been thinking of what plant will look good partnered with the large varieties ...everyone has their own taste ...but i may try pairing with some Cafe au lait Dahlias. Happy gardening everyone

Thank you for sharing your pairing idea - we would not have thought of Café au Lait but that form and colour combo would work beautifully together. Queen Mum is a stunning cultivar.

Do you plant in plastic pots and drop in to the terracotta ones when you make seasonal changes …great idea ! Must try rotating around
@ApplePeaFernSea
@ApplePeaFernSea 3 ай бұрын
We absolutely do, the plastic containers are easy to lift in and out of larger terracotta ones. At the moment we have spring bulbs where agapanthus will later be displayed. This also makes it easy to move agapanthus under cover to survive the winter. Wishing you happy spring gardening and plant rotating!

Hi there, we wonder whether the manure might be the issue (if our translation is correct) - manure can produce ammonia as it breaks down, potentially damaging the delicate infant roots of young plants and causing yellowing foliage. Perhaps you could transplant some of the seedlings into pots with a well-drained manure-free growing medium and compare their progress with those in the ground. If there is a helpful nursery close to you, they may have some expert local advice. Best wishes.

If they have been growing in a container (?) for a while, try dividing and replanting to give new life.

Many thanks for watching, and if there’s a particular aspect of caring for evergreen agapanthus in containers that isn’t covered we can try our best to answer your question here, if that might be of help.

Should aggies be trimmed back to overwinter, and at what temperature? Your garden is beautiful and the music is soothing!
@ApplePeaFernSea
@ApplePeaFernSea 10 ай бұрын
Thank you Anna, so glad you enjoyed the aggies video. For our evergreen varieties, we keep the leaves intact and wrap fleece over them (either using canes as a frame or by gently bunching leaves to fit in a fleece bag) before placing pots in a completely dry, sheltered spot from November (temp here around 4ºC or 39ºF) to late march. Even more than wet feet, agapanthus hate cold wet feet. Some leaves will naturally appear dead or yellow by spring, and need trimming away, leaving the healthy ones. We divided ‘African Skies’ a few years ago and gave a portion to a friend who gardens in the same climate as us - we have been impressed to see this plant thriving in the ground all year round, with no extra winter protection, which just goes to show the importance of considering each garden's micro climate. Hope this was helpful and sending best wishes.
Agapanthus, these beautiful plants are easily propagated by division.
