Cartridge belts made by folding a thinner piece of leather and sewing it to leave a hollow in the middle for money or personal papers were very common in the 2nd half of the 1800's and the early 1900s..
Rarely were the holster and belt made as a single matched set, they were usually bought as 2 separate items. The matched rigs we've become accustomed to are primarily an invention of Hollywood.

Hey all, this is a video I posted about a week ago, but I posted it privately for some of my customers. Unfortunately I linked it to one of my playlists so other people had been watching it. So last night I decided to publish it publicly but anyone who is familiar with my videos will notice this one is somewhat different in that I also talk. A bit of narration on the history of this video. If you like the narration at the beginning, let me know in the comments and I may begin doing that more often.

Thank you. You are indeed a very clever and artistic person. I take interest in the historic information about the style and function of the peice you are about to make. It explains why you are doing what you are doing and then get on with it. Your work speaks for itself. Different if you were doing a "How To" video where interested people want to know about products and tools etc. I prefer to just watch the process.

You take second fiddle to knowone! I have been a hobbiest for some years and am on my 3rd saddle. Also Mcclellan saddlebags and related horse gear, etc. Just got my first swing machine. Point is you are very good at showing the use of your tools. I was amused to see that you too have to use a leg to help split leather.

Thank you for the rare treat of hearing your voice. Strange, I always had the thought that you were a French Canadian but that's where assumptions get you!. Too short, as I always think but they could last an age and I would still think the same thing. Not another hostler, as promised, but there is just one thing I should like to ask. How do you get the money in and out?

Is that a vergez blanchard plough gauge? I have one but have not been able to cut right with it. The width of the leather strap seems to want to grow or bind. Any pointers? Great video btw.

Great job mate , you make it look pretty easy. I've got a crocodile skin belt that the backing has come apart. The glue us given up on her, can I re-glue the same backing on it or get the boot make to fix it ? It's 21 years old and yeah I've got a new one but I really like my old one better. What glue do it use or send her off to the boot maker ? Great video mate 👍

I appears as if it would require stitching not gluing. Look after it and it will last another 21 years.

@@uxb1112 yeah it was never stitched, nor is the new one . I think I'll find a good boot maker and let him at it . Thanks for your advice mate good luck buddy 👍
