Age of Empires, released on October 26, 1997, was the first game in the series, as well as the first major release from Ensemble Studios. It was one of the first history-based real-time strategy games made, utilizing the Genie game engine. GameSpot described it as a mix of Civilization and Warcraft. The game gives players a choice of 12 civilizations to develop from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. The expansion pack, The Rise of Rome, published by Microsoft on October 31, 1998, introduced new features and four new civilizations, including the Romans. Although the two games had contained many software bugs, patches resolved many of the problems

That version is OK but nothign compared to the original, they dont have any of the Midi's, the definitive edition OST, its like an entirely different soundtrack. The opening trck alone is so distinctive in people memory, with the use of MIDI synthesizer's , the new one doesn't really sound any thing like it.

2:15 i had a time travel when i had 5 years and with my dad and brother we were trying to understand how to play it. Because of this and the AoE II im studying history.

it was my first ever game cd!! :) got the demo+bridge too far and some f1 game demo bundled to a box of floppy disks which i asked for Christmas. i still remember i was dream sleeping the whole night at bed when i was stuck with the demo's Hittite battle of Kadesh map. trying to find solutions for gold scarcity while sleeping :))

I've been playing AoE series for 21 years, but never heard this track before. Which version had this? I only had MIDI versions of AoE 1 & RoR and the MP3s of UPatch HD 1.1 - but none of them had this.

@@Gothpaladinus the song at 2:15 ? I had the original AoE 1 in the 90s and it had this song. This song played at the start of pretty much every game

@@Gothpaladinus The original game disc from 1997 had it. I played it but don't have it anymore because it belonged to my landlady's family in 1998 and then I moved out. But the 1999 Gold Edition which I do have and I think versions sold thereafter, do not. Shame about the Gold Edition, I was looking forward to hearing the track again in games.

This was definitely the best Age of Empires game and this isn't just for this one I think many of the first games made in specific series were usually the best.

Wait, AEO 1 had a CD OST?? I only listened to the MIDI version, but I still really enjoyed it! If only I knew lol, this is a fantastic soundtrack.

I doubt there was ever an OST. You can play and extract the music from the game CD. There was a separate Compilation Soundtrack music CD that came with the Collector's Edition game package which I have and it has a few of the tracks here as well as others.

While i didn't play this game the same amount i did its sequel; you'd think i'd recognise all these tracks. The only ones i recognise are Death, Gamelan, Hunt, Wally & Grey Sky. Compare that to AOE2 where EVERY song is ingrained into my psyche.

How can that occur that I only recognize Open, Won, Loss, Rain and Wally themes? I have never heard all the others that are on this.

@@southplaq2887 Actually, these ones are not even on the game disk (at least on the original copy I have + some ISOs I found like a Gold Edition ISO). I would really like to know where the original poster found them

@@floopaps gold edition had a stripped down audio if i recall. that's why most torrent sites and others are able to post it as a less than 100megs or so iso. if you inspect those isos they only contain a single data track. the original game disc (v1.0) contained separate audio track playable in any hifi /cd player. copy protection/game spinning up intro track and/or getting stuck playing them/ or when cd was scratchy was also probably the reason they had a command line option for the application icon/link to play midi music instead. they were only fraction of storage place (few kilobytes) playable from hdd but didn't any comparison sound as nice as the audio tracks. later however it became commonplace and by default i think the rise of Rome beta edition and the gold version already started with the midis. as such some people never experienced it as they just got the 50megs gold iso thinking they have all.. pity but it is what it is...

If you played gold edition or 1 with the Rise of Rome expansion, it replaced the original set of music with the Rise of Rome set.

you might have played aoe 1 Rise of Rome. I rememer playing it off of aoe gold disc which came with the original game + expansion which had an entirely different sound track!

Aside from Rise of Rome, it could be that you played either without the CD in or a version of the game that didn't have the CD soundtrack, which is actually different from the MIDI soundtrack that I think most people heard. So there's technically three soundtracks for AoE 1: CD (this one), MIDI (one most probably heard), and the RoR expansion one (which also had CD and MIDI versions, but they were the same tracks).

Wait... this game had cd audio? Neither the pirated version that I played as a kid or the gold edition I bought as an adult had cd audio, only the midi files

Insert the Age of Empires CD-ROM before starting the game. Then you'll hear the CD audio. If you start the game first and then insert the CD-ROM, you'll hear the MIDI audio.

@@sweeflyboy I had that issue, too. Uninstalling and reinstalling helped briefly, but the weird music returned again. Never looked into why.
