Agent causation posits that human agents are the cause of their decisions, that they possess such a power of will or volition as part of their nature. The term ‘free will,’ as its two words imply, means that the agent is free to make its own choices out of its own will. As individuals, we are the fundamental cause of what we will, and we as cause is irreducible to the movement of fundamental particles or prior motives such as a determinist may argue for, and irreducible to prior events, as an event-causalist may argue for. At first glance, agent causation seems so obvious that it should be at the top of the list of theories of free will. And arguably, it was since ancient times, as taught by Epicurus, Aristotle and religious dogma of how some things are “up to us.” However, short of a bald assertion, the agent causalist needs to explain how such a free will is possible and from where it comes from.
